Bad to the bone

Wolf senior Andrew Martin comes rumbling up the middle, taking the first steps on his way to a 30-yard stroll to the end zone.

Closer and closer, each snap one more step down the path.

The Coupeville High School football team sits just four days out from its season opener — Friday at home vs. Port Townsend — and all the wrinkles are being ironed out.

The Wolves got a taste of live action Friday when they traveled to Sedro-Woolley for a five-team jamboree, emerging with strong showings on both sides of the ball.

Strolling into town, then wandering away on a journey which eventually brought him (and his camera) back to Whidbey, was paparazzi to the stars John Fisken.

Movin’ right along

And they’re off.

Picking up speed.

“Cripes! It’s the fuzz!!”

Cruising right along.

Heading for the finish line.

With a little help from gravity, the cars were flying.

The North Whidbey Sunrise Rotary Club hosted a soapbox derby-style event Saturday in Oak Harbor.

The event gave children with disabilities the chance to participate, pairing them up with another child who was trained to steer and brake on the downhill course.

It’s the 27th year for the annual event.

While Sunrise Rotary is the driving force behind the day of racing, help also came from a wide variety of community organizations and individuals.

That included the City of Oak Harbor, as well as the Public Works department, both the police and fire department, the Oak Harbor School District, Kathy and Butch Laurion, and the Leo Finnegan family.

Oak Harbor High School cheerleaders and the school’s NJROTC Color Guard were on hand to form a substantial cheering section.

With liquid sunshine splashing down on the prairie Wednesday, the Coupeville High School football team opened fall practice, effectively kicking off a new school sports year.

The Wolves opened with two practices on day one, and the pics seen above came from the morning session, as wanderin’ cameraman John Fisken avoided the rain drops.

Back on the Island and back at work.

After spending a chunk of time bouncing around America in an RV, searching for inner truth and such, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken returned to Coupeville Saturday morning.

Calling him like a siren song was the 2019 edition of the annual Race the Reserve, a five-race event which raises money for the next graduating class from Coupeville High School.

Dealing with a sudden onslaught of liquid sunshine in the early morning hours, Fisken kept the camera hummin’, and the pics seen above are a taste of what he shot.

Rain was droppin’, camera was poppin’

Stealing bases when the other team isn’t looking is kind of our thing.

“Just the way I taught him!”

“Ehhh, it’s kinda cold and slimy down here…”

“I have to wash those pants??!?”

Spoiler alert: John Rachal hit the ball pretty darn far on this swing.

“My big brother can throw harder than your big brother. Just you wait…”

“Oh, it’s true. Prepare to taste hot death, my friend!”

Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays the paparazzi from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

So John Fisken dodged the many, many raindrops Wednesday in Oak Harbor to snap pics as the District 11 baseball tourney played out across multiple fields at Windjammer Park.

The photos above capture the only game we really care about here in Coupeville, the one in which Central Whidbey swatted Sedro-Woolley 10-1.
