CMS track eyes new season

Almost time to head outdoors.

Coupeville Middle School athletes start track and field practice April 14 and will be welcomed by a pack of three leaders.

Jon Gabelein returns to anchor the coaching staff, with Brooke Crowder and Kelly Powers joining to replace Amber Wyman.

Their hire will be official once approved by the school board at its meeting Thursday night.

The young Wolves, who will draw competitors from grades 6-8, have a six-meet schedule.

The Coupeville Middle School track and field team wrapped its season last week with the Cascade League Championships, and today we offer up the remaining pics we had still stashed away.

CMS track and field sets schedule

One eye on the present, one on the future.

The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams play for the third time this season Tuesday, with five more contests on the schedule between now and Mar. 9.

But even as that saga unwinds, the next chapter is already on the horizon.

CMS track and field, open to athletes in grades 6-8, kicks off a new season with the first day of practice Apr. 10.

Coupeville has a six-meet schedule in place, with all meets planned to start at 3:30 PM.

What the Wolves don’t currently have is a head coach, as the position is open after Paige Spangler moved out of state.

Jon Gabelein is listed as an assistant coach, however, so however it plays out, there’s at least one oval veteran around to keep things moving along.

CMS track plans for big season

Their rivals await.

With the pandemic waning, Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes return to competing against students from other schools this spring.

After being restricted to intramural events for a chunk of the Age of Coronavirus, the Wolves reunite with other Cascade League foes and have a six-meet schedule ahead of them.

Coupeville will draw competitors from grades 6-8, with all meets set to kick off at 3:30 PM.

The first day of practice is April 11.

Gabelein runs laps around other coaches

It was a blowout.

Coupeville Middle School track coach Jon Gabelein put the hammer down midway through our 48-hour poll to decide the “Top Coach of the Spring” and never looked back.

Pulling in more than 50% of the 3,058 votes cast, he bested 17 other CHS and CMS coaches to win a highly-coveted, yet totally imaginary, award.

In somewhat of a surprise, Gabelein’s win also means middle school coaches won all three season polls this school year.

CMS cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting won in the fall, while CMS hoops coaches, and twin brothers, Dante and DeAndre Mitchell tied for top honors in the winter.

This time around, Gabelein finished with 1,676 votes, while CHS assistant baseball coach Aaron Lucero (540) held down second-place.

Rounding out the top five were CHS head softball coach Kevin McGranahan (282), CHS softball assistant Morgan Young (128), and CHS head baseball coach Chris Smith (94).
