Flowers and basketball players were blooming.

Several packs of Coupeville Wolf hoops stars spent part of the weekend playing in Skagit Valley’s 23rd annual Tulip Basketball Tournament

By the time they were done, both squads had played numerous games (the older girls claiming 5th place in a 12-team tourney), but still had time to pose for photos.

The heirs to Makana Stone are about to take the well-worn track oval.

Well, in a bit.

With basketball officially wrapped up, Coupeville Middle School moves into track season a month from now.

The first day of practice is Monday, April 13 and meets (all on the road, but two on Whidbey) start two weeks afterward.

If you’re anxious to track the burgeoning careers of future CHS stars like Chris Battaglia, Kalia Littlejohn or Lindsey Roberts, print out the schedule below, laminate it and then gas up the minivan.

Learn their names now, because you’ll be hearing and reading them a lot in the future.

Lindsey. Kalia. Scout. Avalon. And on and on.

The young women who played basketball for Coupeville Middle School may have wrapped up their season Thursday, but they’ll be back.

Bigger. Taller. Stronger. Quicker. More well-honed in the basketball arts.

They were successful on the floor this time around, and that should carry over as they begin to move up and join the very successful CHS squads — the high school varsity and JV went a combined 18-0 in league play — in the coming years.

Until then, here are eight snappy pics of the young guns in action, on and off the court, from the finale in Langley.

The future starts now.

Kalia Littlejohn

Kalia Littlejohn

The only thing little about Kalia Littlejohn is her last name.

The Coupeville Middle School hoops sensation, one half of the Shake ‘n Bake Sisters with CHS freshman Mia Littlejohn, Kalia brings it big everywhere else.

Big game, on and off the court.

I’m not going to tell you the CMS 8th grader, who celebrates a birthday today, is guaranteed to be an all-star at the high school level or beyond.

Judging middle school athletes is a tricky business, at best, and a lot can happen over the ensuing years.

Growth spurts, changing priorities and on and on.

Some talented youngsters end up deep on the bench as they get older, while some scrubs suddenly morph into super stars in their teen years.

Based on Mia, who has already lettered twice in her freshman year, I think Kalia is probably as sure a shot as we will find.

But, you never know and I don’t want to put too much pressure on her.

Either way, though, I will guarantee you this — Kalia will be one of the most entertaining athletes we’re likely to see in Cow Town over the next few years.

She plays all her sports — volleyball, soccer, track, but, most of all, basketball — at a frantic pace.

Like her sister and their brother, Zepher Loesch, before them, Kalia delivers a jolt of electricity every time she steps up to compete.

What puts her further out in front of the crowd is her personality, which is one part sunny, one part mischievous.

Kalia has yet to meet a camera she can’t pose for, and she and fellow young guns like Lindsey Roberts and Sarah Wright seem primed to claim the throne of lens-lovin’ Wolf legends like Kacie Kiel, Julia Myers and McKayla Bailey.

So, on this, her big day, all my best to the littlest Littlejohn.

I look forward to seeing what you can accomplish in the coming years, Kalia.

Coupeville gets a jump on Langley.

Right back at it.

Two days after kicking off their season, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball players were back in their home gym Thursday, facing off with Island rival Langley.

On the scene, camera in hand, was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides the pics above.
