Three of Whidbey’s finest soccer players have a chance to take their pursuit of “The Beautiful Game” to Spain next summer, but they’ll need some help.

Coupeville’s Mia and Kalia Littlejohn and North Whidbey’s Malia Hansen have been playing for the North West United U-15 Premier team.

To make the select soccer squad, which draws players from across Washington state, they had to beat out all comers at tryouts.

Once they did that, the trio sparkled as NW United enjoyed strong showings at a string of tournaments.

Now, the squad has been invited to play in the 2015 Donosti Cup in Spain.

The tourney, which runs July 6-11, brings together 350 youth soccer teams from around the world.

Held in San Sebastian on the northern coast of Spain, the Donosti Cup gives teams up to six games.

Squads play four to five round-robin games before being placed in a finals or consolation finals bracket.

If NW United makes it to a final, the girls would play at Anoeta Stadium, the home field of Spanish fútbol power Real Sociedad. The stadium seats 32,000 spectators.

Win or lose, all teams will participate in the opening ceremonies, which will feature teams from 17 different countries.

To make the trip, though, the girls will need financial help from fans on The Rock and beyond.

Keeping the rally going.

Keeping the rally going.

Things are starting to click as the season winds down.

Nearing the end of the middle school volleyball season, the CMS 8th grade varsity has hit a hot streak.

Sweeping visiting Northshore in straight sets Thursday, the Wolves captured their second straight win.

“The varsity really showed how much they have learned and have gained experience in some long volleys, staying with the ball, blocking and great digs,” said proud mom Kelly Crownover.

Her daughter, Veronica, and other stars like Kalia Littlejohn and Lindsey Roberts, will look to build on their hot streak when CMS closes the season at home Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Langley comes to town and action tips off at 3 PM, with four matches scheduled (7th grade JV, 7th varsity, 8th JV and 8th varsity).

Sometimes you can learn more from a loss than a win.

Hopefully that’s the case for the next generation of Wolf volleyball stars, who showed promise and flashes of brilliance in an afternoon that ended with a string of losses Thursday.

Playing in Lakewood, all four Coupeville Middle School spiker squads fell, though the eighth grade varsity did pull out a set win.

The scores:

7th grade JV lost 20-17, 20-10

7th grade varsity lost 25-23, 25-13, 15-11

8th grade JV lost 20-9, 20-4

The next generation of Wolf stars is hard at work.

Coupeville Middle School’s volleyball squads have kicked off action and are getting into the flow of sets, spikes and service aces.

If you want to see players like Lindsey Roberts, Veronica Crownover and Scout Smith before they hit the big gym, head out and catch the young Wolves in action.

Coupeville hosts King’s this Monday, Sept. 29, starting at 3 PM in the CMS gym (across the hallway from the high school gym).

Until then, take a gander at the photos above, captured on film by wanderin’ clicker John Fisken.

Mia Littlejohn carries a visible reminder of a soccer ball she stopped with her leg while scrimmaging against a boy’s U15 squad recently.

It’s been a packed summer for the Littlejohn sisters.

Coupeville High School freshman Mia and CMS 8th grader Kalia have been bouncing all over the place, changing sports from day-to-day and always coming out near the top.

Mia played on a Central Whidbey Little League Juniors All-Star softball squad that went undefeated through the regular season, captured a district crown and won a game at the state tourney.

A top track runner for CMS, her little sis fine-tuned her running game, teaming up with mom Dawn Hesselgrave to compete in last weekend’s Race the Reserve.

While also finding time to attend a five-day basketball camp in Spokane with brother Wiley Hesselgrave, the duo have been playing select soccer with the NW United premiere team.

An off-Island squad, it features one other Whidbey player, Malia Hansen.

The squad is currently competing in the last tourney of the summer, the Super Cup. With three games in the books, and one big goal from Kalia, NW United has advanced to Sunday’s title game.

A win there would give the squad its second tournament title of the summer.
