It’s a blast from the past on Throwback Tuesday.

Thanks to someone who helpfully wrote scores on their schedule as the 1962 Coupeville High School football season played out, us young whippersnappers now know the Wolves beat pesky Langley twice that year.

If the pencil markings are correct, CHS finished 4-4-1, closing the season with back-to-back shutout wins at home.

Not sure how, or why, a tie would have ever been accepted, but if anyone was in Granite Falls 53 years ago, we’d love to hear about it.

For now, a big thanks to Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame inductee Jennie (Cross) Prince, who recently obtained the original schedule and was nice enough to share a photo with us.

The life of a track star — sitting around, waiting for your event to be called.

“By the time they get this race started, we’ll be in college…”

Lindsey Roberts is in a hurry.

The Coupeville Middle School eight grader hasn’t been caught in a race this year yet, adding four more wins (200, 1600, 100 hurdles, 4 x 100 relay) to her resume Thursday in a three-team meet in Langley.

Oh yeah, and Roberts also set PRs in all three of her individual races. No big deal, just another day at the (oval) office.

The Wolf girls were especially strong in the relays, winning the 4 x 100 in both the 7th grade race (Mallory Kortuem, Avalon Renninger, Tia Wurzrainer, Maya Toomey-Stout) and 8th grade contest (Roberts, Ashlie Shank, Emma Smith, Jasmine Nastali).

On the boys side, CMS won seven events, sweeping the long jump (Sean Toomey-Stout, Gabe Eck), High Jump (Mason Testroet, Chris Battaglia) and 1600 (Tucker Hall, Danny Conlisk).

Battaglia was a two-time champ, also claiming first in the discus.

The meet brought together Island rivals Coupeville and Langley, with main-lander Granite Falls tossed in just for fun.

Against all odds, they almost pulled out a win.

Almost.

Despite losing four fumbles, two when they were in scoring position, the Coupeville Middle School football squad came dangerously close to pulling off a comeback win Wednesday in Langley, before falling by three points.

The very-young Wolves kept on coming hard into the final moments.

CMS launched an onside kick with a minute to go, but couldn’t quite come up with the ball for one final drive.

“It looked as though we had it (the ball), but after a little wrestling, we came up short,” said Wolf coach Bob Martin. “A little running, a little passing, it was our game to win, but our errors were the deciding factor.”

Coupeville, which is now 0-3, returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Granite Falls.

Wolf players go through warmups.

The future of Wolf volleyball will be on display this Thursday.

Having opened their season Monday with a match in Langley, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads now return to town for their home opener.

The opponent will be Sultan and play kicks off at 3 PM Thursday in the CMS gym.

If you’re in the mood for a long day of spikes and sets, you can skip across the hallway to the CHS gym for a high school match afterwards.

The high school edition of the Wolves play Mount Vernon Christian that evening, with JV at 5 and varsity at 6:15.

For the CMS spikers, the match-up with Sultan will give them a chance to even their record at 1-1.

Facing off with always-tough Langley, the Wolves lost in straight sets in both the 7th grade contest and the 8th grade JV match.

CMS rebounded by taking the opening set of the 8th grade varsity match, before eventually falling in three hard-fought sets.

They went out with a bang.

Closing their season, both of Coupeville Middle School’s varsity girls’ basketball teams thumped host Langley Wednesday.

The Wolf 8th grade varsity came out on top 28-22, while the 7th graders rolled to an impressive 33-20 victory over their Whidbey rivals.

The Falcons got a bit of revenge in the JV games, pulling out 12-6 and 6-5 wins.

A season of big wins and big growth now comes to a close, but the ride was worth it for CMS coaches Bob Martin, Brett Smedley, Ryan King and Christine Wright.

“We are so proud of all the girls!,” Martin said. “Wrapped up the season on very well played defensive games!”
