A little bump in the road? No big thing.

Bouncing back from a razor-thin loss in its last match, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad delivered an epic message Tuesday night.

Invading the gym in which a dynasty was built, the hungry Wolves savaged host La Conner in straight sets, getting big contributions from everyone on the floor.

The 25-9, 26-24, 20-18 win lifts CHS to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-1 overall.

While her team came up just short against Mount Vernon Christian in its last match, JV spiker guru Ashley Menges saw a big turnaround. And it pleased her.

“First set looked so clean,” she said. “We’re applying things we’ve learned in practice, things were going really well all the way through.

“Set two we let off the gas a little and got a little complacent, but it was a good lesson to learn how to dig ourselves out of holes.”

Coupeville had nine different players rack up stats Tuesday, a balanced effort Menges loves to see.

“Lots of really good things tonight,” she said. “Lots of players that are starting to show promising things.”

Rockin’ and rollin.

Menges praised the effort of freshmen Isa Mc Fetridge and Chelsi Stevens, who was placed in a new position “and did great filling in where the team needed her.”

The wham-bam duo of Dakota Strong and Lexis Drake combined for 14 kills, joining up with Capri Anter, who carved up the Braves for eight put-aways of her own.

La Conner often didn’t know where the ball was coming from, but they knew it was coming back over the net hard and fast.

Dakota and Lexi had a really strong night at the net, being consistent as well as keeping their focuses that they work on in practice,” Menges said.

“Overall, lots of really good things and it’s always nice to walk out of that gym with a win.”

Tuesday stats:

Capri Anter — 8 kills, 6 digs, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 15 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces
Lexis Drake — 8 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces
Adeline Maynes — 3 kills, 1 dig, 8 assists, 8 aces
Isa Mc Fetridge — 1 ace
Chelsi Stevens — 1 kill
Dakota Strong — 6 kills
Tenley Stuurmans — 1 kill, 5 digs, 10 assists, 2 aces
Sydney Van Dyke — 3 kills, 4 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces

Lexis Drake gets the stadium rockin’. (Jackie Saia photo)

Lexis Drake has gone to a different level this school year.

As we note the 24 Coupeville High School students who are making the grade as three-sport athletes, we should also hail the Wolf freshman for actually beating that standard.

Drake is among the rarest of rare in that she’s a CHS athlete who has been a part of four separate teams.

Like legendary Wolf Breeanna Messner did back in the day, Jaje’s lil’ sis balanced playing volleyball with being a football cheerleader in the fall.

Lexis delivered spikes and sets for the Wolf JV volleyball crew, where she earned the Most Inspirational award, while also working the sidelines on fall Fridays as part of the varsity cheer squad.

Pulling double duty allowed her to have a front row seat to her big bro playing his senior season of football.

After a super-busy fall, which all happened as Lexis made her own debut as a high schooler, she could have taken a break.

Instead, she immediately jumped into basketball, before picking up the track and field mantle this spring.

Throughout her odyssey, Lexis has shined brightly, putting in tons of hard work while always displaying great joy.

She is the epitome of everything a Wolf student/athlete can be, achieving greatness while remaining humble.

So, take a moment to tip your hat, or lift your drink, and acknowledge Lexis for all she has accomplished – and all she will likely continue to achieve as her high school career plays out.

She’s a jack of all trades, AND a master of them, too.

Her future’s so bright, she’s going to need shades. (Parker Hammons photo)

They’re building for the future, one point at a time.

Coupeville High School JV volleyball coach Ashley Menges has a core of five freshmen on her roster, and the work ethic displayed by those newcomers is the foundation of everything being built.

So, while there will likely be some bumps along the way, such as a straight-sets loss at Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday night, the future is bright.

“The freshman have been carrying a big load recently, and I’m very proud of all of them,” Menges said.

“Hopefully they can see the progress being made, even through the losses.”

Tuesday’s match, while against a Northwest 2B/1B League foe, counts as a non-conference tilt, with the loss dropping the young Wolves to 1-2 on the season.

They get a chance to get right back at it, hosting Orcas Island Thursday, with five of their next six matches in their home gym.

CHS coach Ashley Menges offers some advice from her playing days. “Hit it off their kneecaps. They’ll be a lot less feisty after that, just sayin’.”

While Menges is training her spikers to play for victory, seeing improvement each time out, and a commitment to putting in the work matter greatly to the player turned coach.

“There were some highlights (Tuesday), and we slowly reached our goals through the night which I can always be happy with,” she said.

“We definitely have a lot to work through,” Menges added.

“But as of tonight, I can be happy with the work they’re putting in when things get overwhelming.”

The spirit is strong with them.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad lists 20 athletes on their season-opening roster, and the pics above capture a portion of those Wolves at the first football game.

From 8th graders through seniors, they’re an enthusiastic bunch, sure to be found front and center all fall.

CMS spiker coach Cris Matochi continues to build a strong program. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Joining Matochi is Coupeville alumni Raven Vick (right), and, occasionally, her sister Willow.

Check another box on the list.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams hit the road for the first time this season, surviving a visit Thursday to the wilds of Granite Falls.

The Wolves opened the season with three straight tilts at home, and now get the flip side, not playing on Whidbey again until Oct. 24.

The tale of the road trip:

Varsity:

Using a new player rotation, the Wolves pushed a high-class Granite squad to the limit before falling 25-23, 25-23.

CMS then rebounded to claim a third practice set 15-13.

The loss evens Coupeville’s record at 2-2 at the halfway point of its eight-match season.

Even in defeat, Wolf coaches Cris Matochi and Raven Vick came away pleased with a lot of what they saw on the floor.

“They played really well and everyone got a chance to have good contacts with the ball,” Vick said.

Coupeville was strong when serving, with Adeline Maynes “having long runs at the line every time she served.”

Tenley Stuurmans was also on fire, opening the second set with a six-point run on serve.

Vick praised the play of Lexis Drake, who “had some great passes and consistent serving,” and Haylee Armstrong, who “had many opportunities to hit the ball and had consistent passing.”

Rhylin (Price) and Capri (Anter) chipped in with good passing and serving as well,” Vick added.

JV:

Granite claimed the match 25-6, 25-11, but Coupeville roared back to claim a third set 16-14.

The Wolves, now 1-3 on the campaign, got a season-best performance from 6th grader KeeArya Brown.

KeeArya was on fire tonight with her passing and did well on serving,” Vick said. “She passed 80% of the balls and they were fantastic.”

Alexis Hewitt chipped in with stellar work at the service stripe, and the young Wolves continue to show growth and desire.

“They all played really hard and had good effort,” Vick said. “We struggled with setting up the second ball and that’s what failed us, but they picked it up in the last set to take the win.

“Everyone did their part and they played well.”
