Two sisters, too fast

They created a big splash on their dad’s birthday.

With parents Michael and Jeannie in attendance, and pops celebrating his cake day Sunday, Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl shone brightly this weekend for the Seattle Pacific University crew team.

The Falcons were competing at the WIRA Championships in Sacramento, and both Sandahl sisters were part of teams which delivered strong second-place finishes.

Lucy was the coxswain for the SPU varsity 4+ team, which won its heat Saturday, then dropped its time by more than four seconds Sunday, even while facing down a headwind.

The Falcons almost caught UC Santa Barbara at the end of the finals but needed a few more turns of the oars on a 2,000-meter course.

Meanwhile, Sophie, who is wrapping up her senior season for SPU, rowed out of the third seat for the JV 8+ team, which pushed Humboldt State to the very end of their championship race.

The WIRA Championships marked the end of the regular season for the Falcons, who return to the water at the Windermere Cup Regatta on the Montlake Cut Saturday, May 6.

Sandahl sisters make a splash

West coast, East coast, they rule the water.

Coupeville sisters Sophie and Lucy Sandahl spent the weekend in New Jersey with their Seattle Pacific University crew teammates, competing in the prestigious Knecht Cup.

During the two-day event, the Splashin’ Sandahls anchored the varsity 4+ boat, which vied in the Women’s Club Four DI/DII event.

Lucy is the unit’s coxswain, while Sophie rows out of the #3 seat.

The Falcons claimed 2nd place (out of 14 teams) in Saturday’s prelims, before finishing 4th in Sunday’s Grand Final.

Central Oklahoma led the way both days.

The Sandahl sisters and their boatmates went out with a bang, dropping their time by nearly three seconds from Saturday to Sunday.

Seattle Pacific returns to the water April 29-30, when the Falcons travel to Sacramento for the WIRA Championships.

After moving from South Carolina to Whidbey with their parents, Michael and Jeannie, the Sandahl siblings both excelled in sports and academics.

Lucy graduated from Coupeville High School after playing volleyball and competing in track and field for the Wolves, while Sophie, an accomplished swimmer, earned her degree in Oak Harbor.

The sisters rule the water.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl helped the Seattle Pacific University women’s rowing team thrash arch-rival Western Washington University at the Falcon Regatta Saturday morning.

The duo played major roles for the SPU varsity 4+ boat, which won its two races by almost a full five and seven seconds, respectively.

Overall, Seattle Pacific swept to victory in all six races contested on the L.W. Ship Canal course.

During the varsity 4+ races, Sophie, who celebrated Senior Night festivities this week, was in the #3 seat, while her lil’ sis dictated the pace of the attack from her coxswain position.

SPU, which is highly-rated this season, returns to action Apr. 15-16, when the squad travels to Cherry Hills, New Jersey for the Knecht Cup.

The Sandahls, who were sports and academic standouts as high schoolers, both attended Coupeville schools after the family moved to Whidbey from South Carolina.

Lucy graduated from CHS after playing volleyball and track for the Wolves, while Sophie went up north and finished at my alma mater, Oak Harbor High School, where she competed with the Wildcat swim team.

Coupeville college stars shine brightly

All across the USA, former Wolves were on the prowl Saturday.

Whether it was track and field, rowing, or baseball, Coupeville grads were knee deep in college sports.

A look at CHS alumni in action:

 

Ja’Tarya Hoskins:

The former Wolf cheerleader and track star ran in the 200 at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, hitting the tape in 30.52 seconds.

Hoskins is a redshirt sophomore at Saint Martin’s University and on target to graduate this spring.

Joey Lippo:

The former Wolf three-sport star racked up three hits, three walks, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base while playing a pair of baseball doubleheaders in Boston this weekend.

A junior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Lippo continues to be one of the true bright spots for an Owls team struggling to find a winning groove.

On the season, he’s hitting .283 with 14 hits, including a triple and a home run.

Lippo has scored eight times, while picking up six RBI and walking six times.

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University freshman was also at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational, where he claimed 2nd place in the discus.

Besting 14 of 15 rivals, Martin heaved the throwing implement 128 feet, nine inches.

 

Lucy and Sophie Sandahl:

The sister combo was on the waters at the Husky Open Saturday, competing for Seattle Pacific University in women’s rowing.

Lucy was the coxswain for a pair of varsity 4+ boats which finished second to powerful Cal Poly in four-team fields, while Sophie manned an oar as the Falcons varsity 8+ crew zipped along.

The Sandahl sisters return to action Apr. 1, when SPU hosts the Falcon Regatta.

Coupeville alumni shine in college action

Running, throwing, or rowing — former Coupeville athletes sparkled in multiple locales Friday and Saturday.

Sisters Lucy and Sophie Sandahl returned to the water with their Seattle Pacific University rowing teammates, while former Wolves Ja’Tarya Hoskins and Logan Martin kicked off the outdoor track and field season — just no longer as teammates.

The Sandahls zipped across American Lake in Lakewood at the PLU Invite, helping their varsity four squad capture two lopsided wins.

Lucy Sandahl was the boat’s coxswain, with Megan Rouse (stroke seat), Addie Clark (third seat), Gem Gatmaytan (second seat), and Sophie Sandahl (bow seat) busy on the oars.

SPU dominated against Western Washington University and Seattle University, jumping out to open water after the first 500 meters in both races.

“That is the first time we’ve ever competed with that line up and it was a very strong race day,” Lucy Sandahl said. “It was a good start to building a strong foundation for the season.”

The sensational siblings and their associates return to action Mar. 25, when they’ll take to the water for the Husky Open on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.

While the Sandahls were soaring under cloudy conditions, Martin and Hoskins reunited in Tacoma at the Ed Boitano Invitational.

Hoskins, who is zipping towards graduation from Saint Martin’s University this spring, ran in the 200 at the season-opener, hitting the tape in 31.06 seconds.

Meanwhile, Martin, a freshman at Central Washington University, threw in three events across the two days of the meet.

He claimed 5th place (out of 25 athletes) in the hammer throw with a heave of 154 feet, four inches, while also finishing 10th in the discus (112-07) and 20th in the shot put (34-00).
