Hurricanes surge past Wolf JV

It got away from them.

A rough patch in the middle of Tuesday’s game at Mount Vernon Christian made life tough for the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team.

Throw away the second and third quarters, and the Northwest 2B/1B League tilt was fairly close.

Add them back in, as scorekeepers are apt to do, and it spelled a 57-26 loss for the young Wolves.

The defeat drops CHS to 1-1 in league play, 2-3 overall, with a non-conference home game against Sultan set for Friday.

Tuesday’s trip to Mount Vernon did feature nine Wolves getting their name in the scoring column, though no one topped six points.

High man on this night was freshman Liam Blas, while Nathan Coxsey and Easton Green both added four.

Mahkai Myles, Jayden Little, Riley Lawless, Malachi Somes, Davin Houston, and Sage Arends filled out the attack with two points apiece, while Kyle McCrimmon, Carson Grove, and Khanor Jump also saw floor time.

MVC led 9-4 after one quarter of action, then used a 17-10 surge to push the halftime lead out to 26-14.

From there, a 20-6 tear by the Hurricanes in the third quarter was a killer for Coupeville.

Wolf JV keeps scoreboard jumpin’

Sometimes you’re the meat and sometimes you’re the grinder.

Wednesday night it was Coupeville’s turn to do the chopping and shredding, as its JV boys’ basketball team torched visiting South Whidbey 73-4.

And no, that’s not a misprint.

The non-conference win against their next-door neighbor lifts the Wolves to 11-2 on the season heading into a road trip Saturday to play Chief Leschi.

While Wednesday’s score might sound bad, it could have been far, far worse.

With Coupeville’s varsity featuring nine seniors, its second unit is filled to the brim with players who in other years would already be playing in the marquee games.

Facing a scrappy, but outmatched Falcon squad, the Wolves threw down the gauntlet early, then did everything possible to give their foes a good rumble while not running up the score unnecessarily.

Coupeville’s starters only played 10 minutes, with most of the game devoted to giving CHS freshmen the run of the floor.

Still, the Wolf starters, even with Johnny Porter in street clothes with an injury, are a potent bunch and they blew out to a 41-0 lead by the first break.

Jack Porter and Camden Glover controlled the boards, using their long arms to yank down rebounds and turn them into second-chance buckets, while Malachi Somes, Aiden O’Neill, and Landon Roberts went on a rampage of backcourt steals.

The Wolf lead eventually got up to 50-0 after a pair of Jayden McManus buckets wrapped around a three-ball from Davin Houston, before South Whidbey finally broke through.

Drew Staats slipped a free throw through the net with 3:37 to play in the half to get the Falcons on the board, while Elias Wilke nailed a three-ball from the right side for his team’s lone field goal.

After that, it was all Coupeville, all the time, as the Wolves pushed the lead to 60-4 at the half, before coasting in for the win while a running clock kept things hoppin’ in the second half.

Ten of the 11 Wolves to see action scored, with Jack Porter (14), Somes (11), and Glover (10) hitting double digits.

McManus (9), Houston (9), Riley Lawless (6), O’Neill (6), Roberts (4), Sage Arends (2), and Makai Myles (2) also tallied points, while Easton Green spent the night setting up his teammates with crisp passes.

They got the beat, and the shooting touch

The numbers keep trending up.

Heading into a busy week of basketball, there are now eight Wolves who have cracked 100 points this season — six boys and two girls.

Logan Downes, who reached #1 on the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball career scoring chart Saturday, is, not surprisingly, our top scorer this season.

Sitting at #2 is sophomore Camden Glover, who leads an explosive JV squad which features three 100+ point scorers, and two more guys close to joining them.

Overall, CHS hoops stars have combined to rain down 2,237 points this season, of which 2,211 are fully accounted for in our stats watch.

Suns out, (gridiron) guns out

The work begins.

Coupeville High School football practice kicked off Wednesday, with soccer, cross country, cheer, and volleyball set to launch this coming Monday.

With the sun out (at least for a few days more), the guns were out, as seen in the pics above and below.

Now, just wait until an October game plays out in wet, dense fog, and we’ll see how many Wolves opt to go back to wearing multiple layers.

Somes sizzles, Wolves thrill

It’s a meet so big, they break it into two parts.

The Cascade League Track and Field Championships pits seven middle schools against each other, with Coupeville right in the thick of things.

Day one went down Thursday at Lakewood, with day two set for Wednesday, June 1 at the same location.

The opening session featured a mix of prelims and finals, with Coupeville coming away with a rock-solid 30 PR’s spread among its athletes.

The biggest splash of the day came courtesy Wolf 8th grader Malachi Somes, who ran away with a victory in the finals of the 1600.

Notching a career-best time, he topped a 12-man field, holding off his closest competitor by more than five seconds.
