Record busters ‘r us!!

We’ll take all the records. I said all of them!

Little-bitty Coupeville invaded the big time Saturday, staring down 19 other schools, many of them from 2A, 3A and 4A, at the Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo, and rocked the joint.

Backed by the most enthusiastic fan section in attendance, the Wolves produced two meet records and a school record, while holding their own in the team scoring.

Coupeville’s boys finished 7th overall, and were the highest-scoring 1A team in the field, while the CHS girls copped 10th overall and 3rd among 1A schools.

The biggest highlights came from pole vaulter Mallory Kortuem and the Wolf relay teams.

Kortuem, a sophomore who is competing in the pole vault for the first time this season, shattered the school record for female athletes, hitting an even seven feet.

The previous CHS record, set in 2017 by Mckenzie Meyer, was 6-06, a mark Kortuem tied at the Cashmere Invitational earlier this season.

Coupeville’s sophomore supernova didn’t stop there, as she joined Maya Toomey-Stout, Ashlie Shank and Lindsey Roberts to win the Sprinters Medley relay.

The event features two 100 legs, a 200 leg and a 400 leg, and Coupeville’s time of one minute, 58 seconds topped the meet record set in 2017.

Not to be outdone, the Coupeville quartet of Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout, Jacob Smith and Danny Conlisk won the boys version of the event, and they also shattered the meet record.

Their time of 1:41.74 topped a mark set in 2013.

Nine Wolves set PR’s at the meet, with Natalie Hollrigel going a perfect two-for-two. She notched her best-ever times in the 200 and 800.

The meet drew 20 schools, with one 4A school (South Kitsap), two 3A’s, seven 2A’s, eight 1A’s and two 1B’s.

Coupeville will look to continue its hot streak Monday, when it hosts its second, and final, home meet of the season.

The Wolves welcome Friday Harbor and Lopez to town and things kick off at 3:15 PM.

   Mallory Kortuem just wants to eat her salad in peace, and yet, everywhere she goes, there’s the stinkin’ paparazzi.

It had a little bit of a David vs. Goliath feel.

Coupeville, a 2B-sized school forced to masquerade as a 1A, was but a speck Wednesday, at least compared to its track and field rivals.

And yet, facing a trio of large 2A schools at a four-team meet in Sequim, the Wolves held their own, winning four events and setting 12 PR’s.

The CHS girls, buoyed by victories from Mallory Kortuem (400), Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) and Lauren Bayne (High Jump), finished third in the team standings.

With 52 points, the Wolves narrowly missed catching Olympic (58), while easily beating Sequim (40). A very-deep North Kitsap squad (117) ran away with the victory.

On the boys side, Coupeville was missing several top athletes.

Running ace Danny Conlisk and thrower Chris Battaglia were dealing with health issues, while sprint god Jacob Smith had to scratch most of his events Wednesday after his hamstring tightened up.

Without three of their biggest individual scorers, the Wolf boys settled for a win in the high jump from Ariah Bepler, finishing fourth in the team race with 30.5 points.

North Kitsap (105), Sequim (69) and Olympic (59.5) rounded out the field.

Coupeville spread its PR’s out, with 11 athletes getting at least one.

Keahi Sorrows led the way, bettering his previous top marks in both the shot put and discus.

Little school, big results!!

Catherine Lhamon set PR’s in both the 1600 and 3200.

No fear, ever.

Despite repping one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, the Coupeville High School track team more than held its own with the big boys (and girls) Thursday afternoon.

Facing off with three 2A schools at Silverdale Stadium, the Wolves came away with nine wins and 22 PR’s.

In team scoring, the CHS boys beat both Port Angeles (71-68) and Kingston (90-53), while falling to host Olympic (80-60).

Coupeville’s girls, who swept the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays, beat Kingston (94-53), tied Olympic (73-73) and lost to Port Angeles (99-51).

While a host of Wolves had impressive afternoons, junior Lindsey Roberts and sophomore Mallory Kortuem led the way as three-time winners.

The duo combined with Ashlie Shank and Maya Toomey-Stout to win two relays, while also each nabbing first in an individual race.

For Kortuem, it was the 400, while Roberts cruised to a win in the 100 hurdles.

Other Wolf champions included Ryan Labrador (Shot Put), Allison Wenzel (Javelin), Chris Battaglia (Javelin), Jacob Smith (400) and Ariah Bepler (High Jump).

Coupeville spread out its PR’s across a broad range of athletes, with 18 different Wolves setting a personal best in at least one event.

Catherine Lhamon (1600, 3200), Henry Wynn (100, 200), Kylie Chernikoff (Discus, Javelin) and Ethan Clavette (100, Discus) topped CHS with two PR’s apiece.
