Get ’em the big bus.

Coming off of an impressive performance Wednesday in the rain at Tri-Districts, the Coupeville High School cross country squad is sending 11 runners on to the state meet.

Wolf running guru Elizabeth Bitting will be taking four girls and seven boys to Pasco for the 2B championships, which are set for Saturday, Nov. 9.

That’s the most state meet qualifiers in one season since CHS revived its cross country program in 2017 after a two-decade layoff.

Coupeville is sending its entire boys’ team to state for the second time in as many seasons, while four Wolf girls made it through as individual qualifiers.

Conditions were wet, wet, wet at Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood as runners from Districts 1, 2, and 3 came together to battle for trail supremacy on a 5,000-meter course.

The top two boys’ teams and top three girls’ teams punched their state ticket as a group, and Coupeville almost got both of its groups through.

The boys, who placed five runners in the top 10, finished 2nd in the team standings, narrowly nipped 31-34 by Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian for the crown.

Friday Harbor (68) was a distant third.

On the girls’ side, Pope John Paul II, led by defending state champ Ruby Henry, ran away with the team title, racking up just 30 points.

MVC (82) and Friday Harbor (84) also earned state berths, with Coupeville (98) notching fourth place in the team standings.

While the Wolf girls didn’t advance as a complete unit, the top 21 individual runners also earned state invitations, with freshman Devon Wyman literally nabbing the last spot by outsprinting a Friday Harbor rival by five seconds.

From Coupeville’s 11 state meet qualifiers, senior Carson Field will be making his third trip to the biggest run of the year.

Landon Roberts, George Spear, Ezekiel Allen, Kenneth Jacobsen, and Thomas Strelow are now two-timers, while Wyman, Mikayla Wagner, Ethan Walling, Aleksia Jump, and Aleera Kent will make their state cross country meet debut.

They ran in the sun and had some fun.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad placed six runners in the top 10 Thursday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Freshman Mikayla Wagner led the way with a 5th place performance at Mount Vernon Christian, helping the Wolf girls earn 3rd in the team standings behind MVC and Friday Harbor.

The Coupeville boys, who’s top three finished within a span of 1.2 seconds, earned 2nd place, narrowly edged by their hosts in the team standings.

MVC juniors Evangeline Fikkert and Peyton Smith copped the individual crowns on the 5,000-meter course.

Things get increasingly tenser for everyone involved, with the next meet on the schedule the Tri-District meet.

That event, which brings together 21 schools from across Districts 1, 2, and 3, and is the qualifier for the state meet, is set to go down at Ft. Steilacoom in Lakewood Wednesday, Oct. 30.

The odyssey begins.

The middle school track and field meet that’s too big for just one day began Wednesday in Lakewood, as seven schools clashed in the opening round of the Cascade League Championships.

Day one featured a mix of prelims and finals, with Wolf 7th grader Tamsin Ward crowned as league shot put champ.

The victory was her 11th of the season, tying her with her performance as a 6th grader.

Ward and associates will have another chance to capture glory next Wednesday, May 29, when Cascade League competitors return to Lakewood to finish off the two-day season-closer.

With Coupeville halfway to the finish line, coaches Jon Gabelein and Amber Wyman are feeling good about what the Wolves have accomplished, and what’s still ahead.

“We had 63 students here today,” Gabelein said. “I am very proud of the work so many of our athletes have been doing throughout our season.

“The results of their hard work really showed up tonight!”

It’s been a season-long quest, and the young Wolves have made a solid commitment to growth and improvement.

“Students often hear me say that their great accomplishments are not because of luck or magic,” Gabelein said. “They are proof of their continued hard work and being willing to push themselves to be even better.”

Blue skies and fast feet. (Amber Wyman photos)

They hit the tape for the final time this season.

Running Wednesday at the Cascade League Championships in South Whidbey, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad put a bow on the 2023 campaign.

The Wolf girls, led by top finisher Mikayla Wagner, claimed 3rd place in the team standings, while the CMS boys finished 4th.

South Whidbey’s girls and Lakewood’s boys earned top honors at the seven-team event.

For Coupeville’s 8th graders, the meet was just one part of a busy day.

After zipping across the 3,000-meter course, they joined Coupeville coach Amber Wyman in hitting the road for a class field trip to Camp Moran.

And, since their destination sits on Orcas Island, that meant a late ferry trip.

But even with a long day, the Wolf team leaders were still going strong as they moved from one adventure to another.

Livin’ the ferry life.

Big meet, big results.

Running at the Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational in Arlington Friday, Coupeville Middle School athletes made their presence felt.

The Wolf girls finished 5th out of 12 teams, while their male counterparts claimed 9th in a field of 16 squads.

McMurray Middle School, from Vashon Island, earned both team titles.

The race, which is followed Saturday by a high school competition, sent 256 runners scampering across a 1.7-mile course.

“We had some great showings in a big group of runners!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“Coupeville did a great job with some big schools! I am so proud of them!”

The Wolves get right back at it next week, traveling to Sultan Wednesday, Oct. 11 for a seven-team meet.

After that, Coupeville wraps its season with an appearance at the Cascade League Championships, which goes down in Langley Oct. 18.
