The season is underway … in a wet way.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad traveled to Maple Valley Saturday to participate in the Tahoma Co-Ed Relays at Lake Wilderness State Park.

The event, which drew 41 teams, was a jamboree, so official times weren’t posted, but it was a great learning experience for the Wolves.

“The season started with a splash!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “A splashing blast!!”

Runners competed in groups of five, with a mix of male and female runners, and each harrier covering 3,000 meters.

The course was a mix of surfaces, with pavement, grass, trails, and yes, water, to traverse.

Having had their first taste of competition, the Wolves return to action next Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Bellingham for the Gear Up Northwest XC Preview hosted by Sehome.

Depth is no longer an issue.

After returning from a two-decade layoff in 2017, the Coupeville High School cross country program has steadily built up its numbers.

Now, with a new campaign officially launching with the first day of practice Monday, Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting has 24 runners on her roster, with the hope of a few more harriers joining the cause in the coming days.

That depth means CHS won’t be leaving any points on the table, as it often did in the first couple of seasons of the rebirth. Every meet, there will be a full lineup ready to run together and score together.

“One of our key strengths this year is our team size,” Bitting said. “This depth, combined with the talent and enthusiasm of our runners, is a major asset for us.”

Among those 24 runners, Coupeville returns eight state meet veterans.

The entire seven-man crew which competed in Pasco last fall, finishing 10th in the boys’ team standings, is back, as well as Noelle Western, who vied at state last year as an individual.

She and Carson Field have qualified for state twice in their prep career, while Landon Roberts, Ezekiel Allen, George Spear, Thomas Strelow, Kenneth Jacobsen, and Axel Marshall are also aiming for a return trip to the big dance.

Toss in a strong pack of other runners, some with prior varsity experience, and some new to the scene, and Bitting has ample reason to be sky high.

“This year, we’re fortunate to have the majority of our core team back, having only lost two seniors,” she said. “Both the boys varsity and girls’ varsity teams are returning with strong, experienced rosters.

“It’s an exciting time with seven freshmen joining us this year,” she added.

“From what I’ve seen, five of these newcomers have shown a remarkable work ethic and potential.

“Additionally, we have 10th grader Ethan Walling, who has already demonstrated his determination and commitment through his hard work and athleticism.”

Coupeville’s main Northwest 2B/1B League rival, as always, will be Mount Vernon Christian, which moves from 1B up to 2B this season after new classification counts.

“Mount Vernon Christian has consistently been a strong competitor, and I expect this year to be no different,” Bitting said.

“They always push us to perform at our best, just as we strive to challenge them. It’s a competitive dynamic that keeps both teams sharp and motivated.”

While the Hurricanes provide the Wolves with strong competition, cross country often comes down to each runner battling with themselves, trying to shave time and set new bests.

“My primary goal for this season is to match or surpass our performance from last year, while expanding our roster and bringing more athletes along with us,” Bitting said.

“I’m aiming for a repeat of last year’s success and to build on it with an even stronger team.”

To get there, Bitting is focusing on two areas — increasing the overall mileage her athletes run and enhancing their finishing strength.

“I want to see our athletes push their mileage further and refine their already strong finishes,” she said. “There’s always room for growth and improvement.”

Bad weather never bothered them anyway.

Dodging steady rain Saturday, Coupeville cross country runners put up strong performances at the Lake Padden Relays.

The event, hosted by the Greater Bellingham Running Club, consists of relays in which four runners zip around the lake, covering 2.59 miles apiece.

While the calendar said August, the weather looked like October.

“The rain didn’t stop until the last runner crossed the line,” said CHS cross country guru Elizabeth Bitting.

“Mother Nature preparing us for a possibly wet and cold cross country season???”

Coupeville sent out two middle school squads, which finished second and third in their age divisions, as well as three high school quartets and a pack of coaches/parents.

The program leaders claimed fourth, while the high school boys earned a second-place finish.

The Wolf high school girls nabbed a second and third, with Aleera Kent and Mikayla Wagner doing double duty, running a leg with both squads.

“They were IMPRESSIVE!” said Bitting, who, even as she warms up from the late-summer freeze-fest, is more than ready for the start of the school season this coming Monday.

The future is bright.

Year six of the rebirth of Coupeville High School cross country featured eight runners advancing to state, with the Wolf boys claiming 10th place in the team standings — their best showing since the late ’70s.

Every harrier who made the trip to Pasco, and 15 of 18 on the roster, can return next season, when CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting will also get an influx of promising new freshmen.

But before looking ahead to what fall 2024 might bring, the Wolves joined the awards banquet scene Tuesday, putting a wrap on this go-round.

Sophomore Noelle Western and junior Carson Field, both now two-time state qualifiers, earned Most Valuable Runner status to headline the shindig.

Start of a new dynasty?

The Coupeville High School cross country squad sent eight runners to the line Saturday at the 1B/2B state meet in Pasco, and every one of them is eligible to return next season.

The Wolf boys qualified as a complete team for the first time since the late ’70s, while sophomore Noelle Western made it two-for-two in her short, but productive, running career.

With no seniors among the state participants, Coupeville is primed for even more success in the future.

And while none of the current crop of Wolves joined alumni Natasha Bamberger and Tyler King in bringing home individual state crowns Saturday, Elizabeth Bitting’s runners held up well on the 5,000-meter course at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

The CHS boys finished 10th in the team standings, with their top five runners stretched just one minute and 11 seconds apart.

That’s the fourth-best performance by a boys’ team Saturday.

“These boys!! Amazing!!!,” Bitting said. “After 46 years of missing state to finish 10th!

“They ALL ran so hard and pushed themselves to their limits!” she added.

“The look on all their faces running down the homestretch, it was obvious they left it all on the course.”

This marks the fourth time the Wolf boys have finished in the top 10 as a team at state, and the first since they went 9th, 5th, and 5th between 1975-1977.

Coupeville’s girls, who claimed 8th place as a team last year, also have an 8th in 1981 and a program-best 4th in 1982.

While the Wolf girls just missed on sending a complete team to state this time around, Western made her second trip to Pasco, joining Carson Field in being a repeat qualifier.

Both veterans bettered their performance from last season, even with Western fighting off a cold.

“It was a wet and slick course,” Bitting said. “But she pushed herself and finished strong.”

Pope John Paul II, led by state champ Ruby Henry, claimed the girls’ team title, holding off Garfield-Palouse 45-51.

Henry, just a freshman, nipped Leki Albright of Liberty Bell by three seconds to hit the tape first.

In the boys’ race, it was more of a blowout, with Liberty Bell junior Dexter Delaney finishing 41 seconds ahead of the field.

Valley Christian, a private school out of Spokane, held off Pope John Paul II for the team title, while Coupeville came within a fraction of finishing as high as 8th.

Covenant was one point ahead of Adna, which was two points in front of CHS once everything was totaled up.

Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rival, Mount Vernon Christian, finished 14th in the team standings, as the Wolves beat them at both tri-districts and state after the Hurricanes narrowly won the league title.

After being so strong in the ’70s and ’80s, the CHS cross country program was shut down in the ’90s and sat dormant for nearly two decades.

Individual runners such as Tyler King and Danny Conlisk trained and traveled with Oak Harbor or South Whidbey during the “lost years.”

But the Wolves didn’t fully reenter the harrier world until Athletic Director Willie Smith relaunched things in 2018.

Working alongside fellow coaches Natasha Bamberger, Luke Samford, and Paige Spangler, Bitting has been deeply involved since the rebirth.

Whether coaching at the middle or high school level, the running guru has been instrumental in helping the Wolves build back, step by step.

Looking ahead to season seven of this new era, Bitting can return every athlete who ran in Pasco, and 15 of the 18 who were on the roster this season.

Erica McGrath is the lone senior, while two foreign exchange students ran with the boys’ team.

There are also a number of standout 8th graders ready to make the jump after working with CMS coach Amber Wyman.

Even as one season ends, Bitting is ready to go again.

“I hope this instills in them that their hard work truly does pay off,” she said. “From the very beginning of the season they stuck with the pack mentality and only pushed themselves harder!

“This truly has been an amazing experience and I thank my lucky stars that everything just lined up this season.

“They, both girls’ and boys’ team, were ready for the challenge, bought into what I was preaching, their times dropped and look how they finished! That says it all!”
