One chapter closes, another opens

Sophomore Ava Mitten is part of a strong group of underclassmen who can return next season.

The season is done, but the growth continues.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer squad fell 4-1 at Friday Harbor Tuesday afternoon, bringing a close to this chapter.

But, even with a strong seven-player senior class (plus a foreign exchange student) departing, the Wolves can return 12 of 20 booters next season.

That includes veteran defensive stalwarts Carolyn Lhamon and Nezi Keiper, as well as two bright offensive talents with most of their career still ahead of them.

Freshman Ayden Wyman, who rapped home Coupeville’s lone goal Tuesday, tied senior Audrianna Shaw as the team’s #1 scorer.

Wyman’s four goals this season were the most for a CHS frosh girl since Genna Wright tallied 10 in 2017.

Meanwhile, Amaya Schaffeld, who shone brightly all season and assisted on Wyman’s score, is only an 8th grader, leaving her with a full four-year high school run ahead of her.

Coupeville’s primary goaltender, Maylin Steele, is also among the underclassmen who Wolf coach Kyle Nelson can look forward to seeing again.

The Wolves finished the season 2-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-7 overall, and were likely denied another win when a postponed match against La Conner was never rescheduled.

Both of Coupeville’s league wins came against the Braves, though it also played Friday Harbor very close, and closed the gap over the course of its three-game series with frontrunner Mount Vernon Christian.

The Wolves also garnered non-conference wins against a pair of 1A schools — Sultan and Granite Falls — and won three of their five home games.

While Tuesday’s finale featured Wyman’s fourth goal, it also offered senior Sophie Martin a chance for a swan song.

After missing three weeks with illness, the fleet-footed one capped a three-season run for the Wolves in which she finished as the program’s #6 scorer all-time.

The finish line approaches

Meanwhile, Savina Wells goes about her business.

One week to go.

The regular season comes to a close for fall sports as October winds its way towards Halloween.

Barring a football upset (more on that in a second), every Coupeville High School team with the exception of volleyball (and maybe cross country) wraps play by Thursday of this coming week.

Wolf boys soccer exits with back-to-back road games at Orcas Island Oct. 26 and Providence Classical Christian Oct. 28, while girls soccer closes at Friday Harbor Oct. 26.

Cross country travels to Lakewood Oct. 28 for tri-districts. A top-two team finish or a top-14 individual time advances you to state.

Football is the only CHS team at home next week, hosting Friday Harbor Oct. 28 (that’s a Thursday).

Lose, and the Wolves are done.

Win, avenging a 32-6 loss from earlier in the season, and Coupeville finishes in a tie with Friday Harbor.

If that happens, the two teams meet again two days later at a neutral site to play half of a game, with a trip to state at stake.

Meanwhile, the lone Wolf team assured of playing in Nov. is volleyball.

A road trip to Mount Vernon Christian Oct. 28 ends the regular season, then Coupeville is off to La Conner Nov. 3 for the district tourney.

Once there, the Wolves will need to beat Auburn Adventist and the two-time defending state champ tourney hosts to earn a ticket to state.

Now that’s a thumping!

Alita Blouin and Co. are 9-2 in league play, with one match left on the schedule.

A nice bounce-back.

Coming off a rough start to the week, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad drilled visiting Friday Harbor in a fairly quick, efficient manner Thursday night.

The 25-5, 25-11, 25-18 win in their home finale lifts the Wolves to 9-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 9-5 overall.

After playing three matches in four days, CHS has Friday off, then travels to Langley Saturday for the Island Invitational.

The regular season finale is Oct. 28 at Mount Vernon Christian, with the district tournament set for Nov. 3 in La Conner.

Coupeville, as the #2 team out of District 1, faces Auburn Adventist Academy (currently 8-5), the #1 seed from District 2 at 5 PM that night.

The loser is done, while the winner returns to the floor at 7:30 to face two-time defending state champ La Conner (14-0) for the district crown.

Only one school advances to state from the District 1/2 tourney this season.

Any thoughts of playoffs were still far off Thursday, as Coupeville entered play coming off of back-to-back losses to South Whidbey and La Conner.

Things got really positive from the start in this one, however, as Wolf captain Maddie Georges lit a fire beneath her team.

Rifling off 13 straight points on her serve to open the match, she got some help as Lucy Tenore and Olivia Schaffeld staggered Friday Harbor with blasts at the net.

Even after Georges had been knocked off the service stripe — thanks to a lucky Wolverine lob which caught the back of the line on a rally — the visitors were never able to string together two points in the opening set.

Savina Wells and Schaffeld blistered the hands of Friday Harbor serve returners, while the eternally-springy Lyla Stuurmans dropped a devastating running tip, then danced away into her teammate’s arms.

The second set was a little more of a battle, as the Wolverines hung around for a bit, trailing just 11-8.

Enter Wells, flying in from the side, and exit the volleyball, which erupted from her fingers, slammed into the court for a winner, and skidded away screaming bloody murder.

That launched another Wolf run, with Georges and Wells combining to pick up 10 points on their serve as Coupeville pushed its advantage way out.

CHS brought a lot more power to the show than the visitors did, but the best play probably came from libero Alita Blouin, who flipped a winner back over her shoulder while on the run, looking away from the net.

With the match well in hand, Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore was able to get floor time for all 12 of his spikers, with his swing players picking up valuable varsity experience.

Madison McMillan, Grey Peabody, and Katie Marti, stars of tomorrow, all chipped in with hustle and alert reactions while in the game.

Meanwhile, Tenore delivered a dominant performance at the net, blasting a team-high nine kills, while fab frosh Stuurmans and Wells put the fear of God into anyone foolhardy enough to wander through their hitting zone.

Strelow zooms, Wolves roar

She saved her biggest moment for the brightest spotlight.

Coupeville High School junior Helen Strelow has been chasing a pair of speedy Mount Vernon Christian runners all season.

Thursday, at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, on her home course at Fort Casey State Park, the Wolf chomped the Hurricanes.

Hitting the line three seconds ahead of MVC’s Maddie Nielsen — her closest competitor — Strelow captured the girls individual title, the second-straight Wolf to do so.

She follows in the footsteps of Catherine Lhamon, who accomplished the feat last season as a senior.

Spurred on by Strelow’s title, the CHS girls placed four runners in the top six Thursday, also claiming the team title.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville boys, continuing their season-long war with MVC, placed second in the team results, nipped by just 31-33.

Hurricane sophomore Devin Van Zanten won the individual boys title.

With CHS coach Paige Spangler out of town, middle school cross country guru Elizabeth Bitting returned to the high school side of things for an afternoon.

“What an absolutely amazing day to have the league championship race,” she said. “Mother Nature was kind to us, the course was picture-perfect and the runners were ready!

“Fort Casey is probably my most favorite course in the area,” Bitting added. “The scenery is breathtaking, visitors to the park always cheer on all runners and our volunteers are first class!!!”

Carson Field finished 5th in the boys race.

Bitting, who coached the CHS program last season, got a chance to see many of her former runners in action, with some newcomers in the mix as well.

“Every athlete out there ran an amazing race!,” she said. “You could see the determination and drive in each and every one of them!

“What an amazing accomplishment for them! Each of them gave it their all, pushed themselves to the limits and finished strong!

“It was so awesome to see Helen kick it in high gear and overtake her opponent!”

Coupeville now advances to tri-districts, which will be held Thursday, Oct. 28 at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.

The top two teams, as well as the top 14 individual finishers, qualify for the state meet.

“I wish them all the very best,” Bitting said. “May they all have fast feet, big strides and lots of PR’s!!!”
