Football action like this may rule the gridiron again soon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Back to the gridiron. Maybe.

The Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League, which draws players from across Whidbey Island, plans to play a spring season.

If COVID-19 cooperates, that is, and Island County can get to Phase 2 in Governor Jay Inslee’s Healthy Washington – Roadmap to Recovery plan.

League President Eric Marshall announced a plan Monday in which football will play, but cheer will not.

“Unfortunately we will NOT be offering cheerleading this spring,” he said.

“Due to the short window for ordering uniforms, and the uncertainty of the season, we do not feel we can offer a quality cheer experience at this time.”

The current plan:

Jan. 18 — Registration opens, with a reduced cost of $100 per player due to “the shortened season and uncertainty of being able to play games.”

Feb. 15 — Registration closes, and league officials will determine if they have enough players to form teams. If not, full refunds will be issued.

Mar. 1 — First practice. No refunds after this point.

There will be three practices per week, at two hours each, with all practices closed to spectators.

Mar. 13 — Jamboree played.

Mar. 20 — First game — if Island County has advanced to Phase 2.

May 1 — Playoffs (semifinals).

May 8 — Super Saturday (championships)

“Our player’s safety always comes first,” Marshall said. “The league will be following ALL safe return to play guidelines and WIAA regulations, including facemasks, temperature checks, and social distancing.

“We hope you have all been staying safe and healthy during this past year,” he added. “We look forward to seeing you all again real soon.”

Wolves Karyme Castro, Bella Velasco, and Emily Fiedler get in on the good times.

Two age groups, two towns, one cheer dream.

Stunting and dancing will unite the Island.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad trundled off to Fort Nugent Park Tuesday, where they linked up with young cheerleaders from Oak Harbor.

The interaction was a warm-up for this Sunday, when BreAnna Boon and her Wolf team host a youth cheer clinic at CHS.

Houston, we do not have a problem … cause he’s takin’ it to the house.

The little brother can ball, too.

Coupeville High School junior Dawson Houston has stepped in as the starting QB for the Wolves this season, leading them to a 3-1 record in non-conference play.

But he’s not the only member of his family tearing up the gridiron.

Younger brother Davin, a fourth grader, is making the trek up to Oak Harbor to play youth football, since Cow Town doesn’t offer a program of its own.

While he was making plays for the 89ers Saturday, as they clashed with Stanwood, the paparazzi caught the younger Houston in all his photogenic glory.

Hunter Bronec (73) gets ready to snap the ball.

Oak Harbor is importing all its linemen from Coupeville these days.

Since there’s no youth football program in Cow Town, local residents have to trek up the Island if they want to play, and brothers Hurlee and Hunter Bronec are doing just that.

Wanderin’ cameraman John Fisken was busy shooting action Saturday when he caught the Wolves at work in disguise.

Football is back.

The first high school game is still five days away, but the Oak Harbor Youth Football and Cheer League has kicked off.

As photographer John Fisken wandered the sidelines at Ft. Nugent Saturday, he caught two Wolves in Wildcat clothing.

Logan Downes and Jean-Pascal Edoukou were both in action for Oak Harbor’s Junior Gold squad, which was clashing with Sedro-Woolley Blue.
