It was the calm before the storm.

With their own trip to the district tourney a day away, several Coupeville High School volleyball players made an appearance at Oak Harbor’s match Tuesday night.

While the Wildcats fell in straight sets to visiting Ferndale, the atmosphere and excitement should help prep the Wolves for their own adventure.

On to La Conner!

On to play Auburn Adventist Academy at 5 PM Wednesday, where a win sends CHS into a 7:30 tilt against the host Braves, with a trip to state at stake.

The non-conference rivalries are back.

As well as full schedules.

Looking ahead to the winter season, when the one true sport, basketball, takes hold of Coupeville, those are the first two things of note.

After playing a pared-down schedule due to Covid, the Wolf hoops teams are set to return to a much more normal reality this time around.

Hopefully.

The ongoing pandemic is still affecting things, often forcing scheduling changes and a flexible attitude for coaches, players, administrators, and fans.

But for now things look decent, with Oak Harbor and South Whidbey both back on the schedule, and Coupeville’s teams set to attend a mid-season tourney in Port Townsend.

How things sit, as of today — seven weeks out from the season opener.

Wins are nice, growth even better.

Getting some of both, the Coupeville High School softball squad strolled to an 8-2 win over next door neighbor Oak Harbor Wednesday, running its summer league winning streak to four games.

The Wolves enjoyed a bigger roster than before, with incoming freshmen who played on the Whidbey Island All-Star juniors team in uniform for the first time.

That group was coming off a district title and a four-game run at the state little league tourney.

“All the new freshmen played for the first time last night and did a great job, with some minor hiccups along the way,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan.

“But, all in all, I was impressed with their poise and how they competed,” he added. “The Wolf fastpitch program has a very bright future.”

With the influx of new players, McGranahan had to shuffle his lineup a bit to insure playing time for the newcomers.

“It is impossible to play 20 girls in one game, so I want to thank those that I asked to take a week off,” he said. “You gave the younger girls valuable experience last night.

“Thanks for being unselfish and “taking one for the team”.”

Coupeville closes summer league play next Wednesday, July 28, when it plays its final two games of the off-season.

Whidbey Island still rules the cheer world.

While Coupeville High School didn’t field a team during this pandemic-altered school year, its neighbors to the North did.

And spoiler alert? Oak Harbor’s cheer program, which has a long history of success, is still making new additions to the trophy case.

Competing virtually, the Wildcats claimed a state title this past weekend, earning top honors from the Washington State Cheer Coaches Association.

OHHS topped all entrants in the Traditional Non-Tumbling Medium class, with Auburn Riverside claiming second, and Bethel collecting third.

The Wildcats are led by coach Jazmin Jones, who has been in charge of the program since 2017.

Her championship squad includes:

Melany Alanis
Johanna Asencio-Morcillo
Francisca Bartlett
Amber Biller
Alyssa Carlon
Jocelyn Carlon
Cassidy Gore
Audrey Moyes
Leah Murphy
Asya Pressley
Mariah Roach
Tatyana Smith
Griffin Stein
