It’s going to be a short bench.

There are only four 8th grade girls playing basketball at Coupeville Middle School this season, meaning coach Ryan King will be dipping into the 7th graders to field his team.

The three girls expected to swing between teams — Izzy Wells, Kiara Contreras and Samantha Streitler — are all hoops vets who play for a successful SWISH squad, so being young shouldn’t be an issue.

While King’s numbers are limited, the 7th grade squad can count on 15 girls on their side of the program.

The Wolf girls open their 10-game schedule on the road at Chimacum Feb. 16.

Coupeville’s first home games are Feb. 23, with large-school rival Stevens making the trip to Whidbey.

The Wolf rosters as of today:

7th grade:

Kiara Contreras
Adair DeJesus
Ja’Kenya Hoskins
Anya Leavell
Lily Leedy
Katelin McCormick
Alana Mihill

Katelyn Painter
Audrianna Shaw

Samantha Streitler

8th grade:

A new season kicks off today.

With Coupeville High School still riding high off last night’s win at Chimacum, its middle school counterparts boarded the bus Saturday morning to head to a jamboree at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

CMS will play the host school, as well as Forks and Chimacum at the all-day affair, then lace it up for real Wednesday, Sept. 23 when Stevens comes to Whidbey.

That school, which the Wolves haven’t played before, boasts 600+ students and has a football roster that groans with 70 players.

By contrast, Coupeville coach Bob Martin has 26 guys to call on at the moment.

They are:

Noa Allen
Raymond Anderson
Trevor Jon Bell
Tyson Bovee
Michael Brewer
Koa Davison
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Trystan Ford
Mason Grove
Dawson Houston
Alex Jimenez
Elliott Johnson
Matthew Kelley
