Amy King loves it when a plan comes together.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball coach went with a freshman-dominant starting lineup Tuesday in Concrete, and the young guns came out on fire.

Putting the game away early and decisively, the Wolves romped to a 56-10 non-conference victory that could have been far, far more lopsided if they hadn’t repeatedly stamped the brakes in the second half.

The win lifts the JV to 4-2 heading into Christmas break.

Fab frosh Maya Toomey-Stout, Emma Mathusek, Scout Smith and Avalon Renninger opened the game, accompanied by savvy sophomore Ema Smith.

That unit was stifling on defense and gave the host Lions absolutely nothing to work with.

“It was awesome to see the team come together and play the way they did,” King said.

Coupeville crashed the boards relentlessly, Scout Smith expertly moved the ball around, setting up one person after another and Toomey-Stout, AKA The Gazelle, flew down the court ahead of every break.

Nothing changed when the Wolves went to the bench.

Nicole Lester and Sarah Wright dominated the paint when in the game, while Maddy Hilkey and a very sick Ashlie Shank delivered strong play from the outside.

Up 12-3 after one, CHS stretched its lead to 30-6 by halftime, though, even before the break, King was trying to contain the carnage.

She ramped things up in the second half, going away from fast breaks and three-point shots and asking her players to burn time while working on running plays.

Even doing that, the third quarter came out 15-0 in favor of the Wolves.

With all nine active players scoring and getting at least one rebound, King was more than pleased with her squad’s effort.

“The whole team played hard, listened when asked to pull back and even performed a brand new play drawn up at half time,” she said.

Scout Smith paced the Wolf attack with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven steals, while Lester and Toomey-Stout hit for 10 apiece.

Wright (8), Ema Smith (8), Shank (3), Hilkey (2), Mathusek (2) and Renninger (2) rounded out the scorers.

Coupeville thoroughly controlled the rebounding game, as Ema Smith snatched a team-high 10 and Toomey-Stout and Renninger each made off with nine.

Dustin

Dustin Van Velkinburgh and fellow Coupeville coaches are excited about the talent flowing through the pipeline these days.

Great day for Coupeville. Not so much for Friday Harbor.

The Wolves played, and won, four different girls basketball games against their Island rivals Saturday.

While the CHS varsity and JV get the big headlines, both of Coupeville’s SWISH teams deserve their moment in the spotlight as well.

The 7th/8th grade Wolves destroyed Friday Harbor 28-6, with hot-shooting Izzy Wells doubling up her foes by herself.

The win lifts the middle school hoops stars to 8-0 on the season for coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh.

Meanwhile, Lark Gustafson, working with an extremely limited bench, guided the Wolf 6th graders to a 16-13 victory.

Maddie “Mad Dog” Georges pumped home 14 by herself, with Hayley Fiedler garnering Coupeville’s other bucket.

Alita Blouin, Stella Johnson, Allie Lucero, Brionna Blouin and Maya Lucero rounded out the roster for the younger Coupeville team.

The undefeated juggernaut that is the 7th/8th grade team was led by Wells, who banked in 12, and Anya Leavell and Audrianna Shaw, who each tallied four.

Kiara Contreras, Chelsea Prescott, Kylie Van Velkinburgh and Ja’Kenya Hoskins had a bucket apiece, while Sam Streitler, Adair DeJesus-Ramirez and Lily Leedy also saw floor time.

Makana Stone

Makana Stone and Co. will stay undefeated through at least the end of the month.

With the Coupeville High School grad coming off the bench to bang home seven points and snag eight rebounds Wednesday, Whitman College thrashed host Warner Pacific 78-44 on the hard-court.

The Blues, ranked #25 in the NCAA D-3 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll, exit Portland at a pristine 5-0, and don’t play again until Dec. 2.

What was once a close game became a blowout with Stone playing a key role in the surge.

Whitman broke open a 6-6 game with a 14-0 first quarter run in which the frosh snared three boards, dealt out an assist and pilfered a steal.

Stone was a woman for all quarters Wednesday, adding a rebound and a layup in the second quarter and a bucket in the fourth, while dominating in the third.

She pulled down four rebounds in that quarter, made off with another steal, recorded her first block at the college level and tossed in three points.

Whitman controlled the glass, out-rebounding Warner Pacific 53-32, while also forcing their hosts to turn the ball over 21 times.

Alysse Ketner paced the Blues with a team-high 14 points, while Mady Burdett tossed in 10 and Emily Rommel had nine points and 10 rebounds.

For the season, Stone is proving to be Whitman’s most dangerous weapon off the bench.

She is #5 on the team in scoring at 7.2 a night, #2 in rebounding at 6.2 (she trails starter Casey Poe 33-31 for the team lead) and #1 in shooting percentage.

Stone sits at a crisp 59.3%, having drained 16 of 27 shots from the field.

Coupeville’s 7th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad is inflicting beat-downs left and right and Saturday was a prime example.

Thrashing Orcas 31-9, the Wolves improved to a flawless 3-0 on the young season.

Coupeville got strong scoring across the board, led by Izzy Wells, who dropped in 10 to outscore her rivals by herself.

Anya Leavell, Audrianna Shaw and Abby Mulholland chipped in with four apiece, while Kiara Contreras (3), Chelsea Prescott (2) and Ja’Kenya Hoskins (2) rounded out the scoring.

Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Sam Streitler and Adair DeJesus-Ramirez also saw floor time for the Wolves, who are coached by Dustin Van Velkinburgh.

Tiffany briscoe

“Tiffany Briscoe’s my name, droppin’ kills is my game.”

Always be closing.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squad took that mantra seriously, firmly stepping on Port Townsend Saturday to end the regular season on a high note.

Squishing the host RedHawks 25-5, 25-16, 25-19, the league champion Wolves finished at 8-1 in 1A Olympic League play, while improving to 11-4 overall.

Coupeville, which has its biggest win total since 2004, hosts the double elimination district tourney Saturday, Nov. 5.

Facing a Port Townsend team which went win-less in league play, CHS rebounded sharply after being nipped in a five-set war at Klahowya in its previous match.

“I’m really happy with the way that we responded to a loss Thursday, a close loss,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “Everyone played calm while passing and playing defense and then aggressively attacked the ball.

“It was a strong way to close the season and go into districts.”

Katrina McGranahan led the way, firing off seven service aces and pounding seven kills.

Hope Lodell and Valen Trujillo had mirror image days, each adding six aces and five digs apiece, while Tiffany Briscoe bashed away for five kills.

Meanwhile Lauren Rose (11) and Ashley Menges (9) combined to dole out 20 assists.
