Valen Trujillo swept to a second straight singles crown at Wednesday’s Olympic League tournament. (John Fisken photo)

They dominated the regular season, they dominated the postseason tournament.

Even with the schedule changing almost at the last second, with the tourney moving up a day and the start time shifting like sand at high tide, the Coupeville High School netters never blinked.

Holding serve, the Wolves swept both the singles and doubles crowns at Wednesday’s Olympic League Tournament in Chimacum and will send six girls to districts.

That event, with the top four from the Olympic League meeting the top four of the Nisqually League, goes down May 18 at the Sprinker Tennis Complex in Tacoma.

Making the next jump will be a hard one, though, as District 3 only gets one entry to state in odd numbered years.

Come back in 2018, and even-year rules will apply, kicking on two entries in both singles and doubles.

To punch their ticket to Eastern Washington, and the sun-baked courts of the state tourney, a Wolf singles player or doubles duo will have to win three straight matches without a loss to claim a district title.

Lose in the championship match and you’re the alternate (and start asking the winner repeatedly if they’re sure they’re feeling alright, cause they kind of sound bronchial every time they talk, and you’re just really, really concerned…).

Fall before that third match and you’ll play on in the loser brackets of the double-elimination district tourney, but with no hope of getting a sniff of state.

Unless that bronchial infection really spreads.

Wednesday, it was déjà vu for the Wolves, as senior singles ace Valen Trujillo and doubles duo Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger repeated as league champs.

The junior combo are undefeated this season, sitting at 11-0 headed into districts. Renninger is 12-0, having won a regular-season match with lil’ sis Avalon when Aparicio was out of town.

Districts will be a family affair, as freshman Zoe Trujillo and Avalon Renninger and foreign exchange student Fanny Deprelle round out the Wolf contingent advancing.

Coupeville claimed first and fourth in both singles and doubles, while Klahowya netted second and third in singles (Hailey Sargent and Sydney Jackson) and second in doubles (Marianne Marker/Taylor Bruce.)

Chimacum advances one doubles team — Gladys Hitt and Christine Bell — after the duo claimed third.

Solid proof Raven and Willow Vick’s parents both completed the half marathon Sunday. (Maria Reyes photo)

Nearly 1,600 runners put shoe to pavement Sunday during the big four races at the Whidbey Island Marathon.

And, with apologies to Susanna Orr of Anchorage, Alaska and everyone else from far-flung locales, the race itself will have to be your reward, because I’m not printing all your names here.

Well, Miss Orr obviously made it … but you get my point.

The names below belong to those who openly claimed Coupeville as their hometown (since this is Coupeville Sports and not Anchorage Running Times).

Or, in a couple of cases, folks who tried to slip through by just putting US under hometown but had recognizable names.

Nice try, Sage Renninger, nice try.

Anyway, if I missed you, it’s either because you hid under a “fake” hometown or I’m just blind. One of the two…

Freshman Tia Wurzrainer teamed with Claire Mietus for a straight-sets win Thursday, lifting Coupeville tennis to a 4-3 win against Klahowya. (John Fisken photo)

The war begins.

With a pair of first-year players rallying to pull out a victory at fourth doubles Thursday, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team drew first blood against Klahowya.

Winning 4-3 on the road, the Wolves stretched their unbeaten streak in Olympic League play to 12 matches across three seasons.

Coupeville (1-0 in league, 2-3 overall) jumps right back in the bus Friday to go face Chimacum (0-1, 0-4), while Klahowya (1-1, 2-5) will bide its time.

Beginning their quest to win a third-straight league title, the Wolves had to dig down deep Thursday afternoon.

With the match tied at 3-3, Tia Wurzrainer and Claire Mietus were Coupeville’s final hope.

Not that they knew it until after they finished their straights-set win.

“Luckily for them, they did not know that the team score was knotted up,” CHS coach Ken Stange said. “I was very pleased with their performance today. They remained calm and they stayed consistent.”

Coupeville used its depth to pull out the win, taking three of four doubles matches and getting a huge win from Bree Daigneault at third singles.

Bree absolutely destroyed her opponent,” Stange said. “She was consistent and she handled the wind very well.”

Top doubles duo Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio remained perfect (Renninger is 5-0, having played a match with younger sister Avalon when her partner was on vacation), while Kameryn St Onge and Maggie Crimmins were electric as they bageled their foes.

While the Wolves took three defeats, all were close, with second doubles going a full three sets.

Avalon and Zoe (Trujillo) played a spirited match, but came up just a little bit short,” Stange said. “They are talented freshmen though, and I believe they will flip the scores next time we meet Klahowya.”

With five of six league matches still ahead on the schedule, Coupeville’s three-peat is far from guaranteed, but Stange likes what he’s seen so far.

“As long as our players stay calm and focused, we should be able to defend our league title.”

Wolf goalie Lauren Grove has 57 saves this season. (John Fisken photo)

Wolf goalie Lauren Grove has 57 saves this season. (John Fisken photo)

Color me confused.

MaxPreps wants to be the go-to place for stats and scores for high school sports (they even made a deal with the WIAA to provide basketball rankings come playoff time) and yet they remain kind of shoddy at the whole thing.

Case in point: trying to go through their soccer stats and scores.

As it stands, MaxPreps currently lists Coupeville’s 4-1 win over North Mason twice, gives Wolf freshman Megan Thorn four goals (spoiler: she hasn’t scored yet) and can’t seem to match its goaltender stats.

CHS senior net-minder Lauren Grove is listed with 57 saves on Coupeville’s personal stat page, and yet appears nowhere on the state leader board, even though that number should put her 20 ahead of anyone else.

So, with all of that in mind, and the caveat that there are a bunch of schools who simply haven’t reported a single stat to the “official clearing house,” here’s how the Wolves (6-4-1) stack up with five regular-season games to play.

Goals:

Mia Littlejohn 21 (#1 in state)
Kalia Littlejohn 7 (tied for #10 in 1A)
Lindsey Roberts 2
Tia Wurzrainer 2
Bree Daigneault 1
Avalon Renninger 1
May Rose 1

Assists:

Sage Renninger 9 (tied for #1 in 1A, #8 in state)
M. Littlejohn 4 (tied for #18 in 1A)
Lauren Bayne 1
Daigneault 1
K. Littlejohn 1
Roberts 1
Wurzrainer 1

Points:

M. Littlejohn 46 (#2 in 1A, #3 in state)
K. Littlejohn 15 (tied for #15 in 1A)
S. Renninger 9
Roberts 5
Wurzrainer 5
Daigneault 3
A. Renninger 2
Rose 2
Bayne 1

Saves in goal:

Lauren Grove 57 (#1 in state?)

Shutouts:

Sisters Mia (left) and Kalia Littlejohn bond before kickin’ fanny and taking names on the pitch.

They kicked things off with a bang.

Ushering in the 2016-2017 prep sports year, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team went into jamboree play Thursday with a thin roster, yet emerged happy with the results.

Despite only having 11 eligible players (four of them freshmen) as everyone scrambles to get enough practices in, the Wolves beat arch-rival South Whidbey and held their own for much of the game with host Oak Harbor.

Sparring with the Falcons, who they will meet in the regular season opener (Sept. 8 in Coupeville), the CHS booters pulled off a dazzling goal en route to a 1-0 win.

Junior captain Sage Renninger crushed the ball which deflated the heart of South Whidbey’s defense, but the play was first set-up by a wild back-and-forth passing effort.

Lindsey Roberts dropped a dead-eye pass to Kalia Littlejohn, who worked a give-and-go with freshman Avalon Renninger.

With the ball back on her foot, Littlejohn, “who impressed the whole crowd with some unbelievable ball skills that would have made David Copperfield blush!!” according to coach Troy Cowan, set up Renninger.

Sage drove a ball that never hit the ground into the back of the net like a Scud missile!!!,” wailed the happily-hyperventilating coach.

Facing off with Oak Harbor, a much-bigger 3A squad, the scrappy 1A Wolves mixed their lineup around and got valuable pitch time for their younger players.

While Coupeville fell 3-0, it showed off “an awesome display of perseverance and never die soccer.”

Cowan hailed the play of veteran Mia Littlejohn, who “consistently made runs and initiated our counterattacks” and fleet-footed frosh Mallory Kortuem, who sizzled in her high school debut.

Capping the night was the performance of sophomore Ema Smith in goal.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t say our jamboree MVP would be Ema,” Cowan said. “This courageous young lady donned the goalie jersey for the very first time in her young career and with really one day to practice!!!

“Well done Ema, you did a terrific job!”
