Thousands of kids, running and jumping.

OK, maybe not thousands, but expect the Coupeville Middle School track and field roster to be jam-packed once again when the Wolves start a new season.

The first day of practice is April 8, with six meets scheduled between April 24 and May 23.

CMS coaches Amber Wyman, Jon Gabelein, and Jaylen Nitta return to guide the Wolves, who will draw athletes from grades 6-8.

The schedule:

Wed-April 24 — HOME — 3:30
Wed-May 1 — @ Granite Falls — 3:30
Wed-May 8 — HOME — 3:30
Thur-May 16 @ South Whidbey

Forks is in, and Cascade (Leavenworth) is out.

We’re still four months out from the first game, but the football schedule for Coupeville High School is already set, thanks to the diligent work of Athletic Director Willie Smith.

The Wolves, who are coming off their first league championship and trip to the state tourney since 1990, went 7-2 last season under first-year head coach Bennett Richter.

While a strong group of seniors will have departed, record-setting quarterback Logan Downes and a pack of talented younger players — including the tallest group of receivers in years — are expected to return.

That group will have four home games, four road trips — though none of them epic — and one half and half affair when they play South Whidbey.

The game is technically in Langley, making it a fifth road trip, but Coupeville fans can, and will, trundle a few miles down the island en masse for that rumble.

The schedule as it sits today, with (*) indicating league games:

Fri-Sept. 1 — Klahowya — (6:00)
Fri-Sept. 8 — @ South Whidbey — (7:00) — BUCKET GAME
Fri-Sept. 15 — @ Sultan — (7:00)
Fri-Sept. 22 — La Conner (*) — (7:00)
Fri-Sept. 29 — @ Friday Harbor (*) — (6:30)
Fri-Oct. 6 — @ Bellingham — (7:00)
Fri-Oct. 13 — Forks — (5:00) — HOMECOMING
Fri-Oct. 20 — @ La Conner (*) — (7:00)
Fri-Oct. 27 — Friday Harbor (*) — (6:00) — SENIOR NIGHT

One eye on the present, one on the future.

The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams play for the third time this season Tuesday, with five more contests on the schedule between now and Mar. 9.

But even as that saga unwinds, the next chapter is already on the horizon.

CMS track and field, open to athletes in grades 6-8, kicks off a new season with the first day of practice Apr. 10.

Coupeville has a six-meet schedule in place, with all meets planned to start at 3:30 PM.

What the Wolves don’t currently have is a head coach, as the position is open after Paige Spangler moved out of state.

Jon Gabelein is listed as an assistant coach, however, so however it plays out, there’s at least one oval veteran around to keep things moving along.

2023 CMS track and field schedule:

Wed-Apr. 26 — HOME
Wed-May 3 — @ South Whidbey
Wed-May 10 — HOME
Wed-May 17 — @ King’s
Thur-May 25 — @ Cascade League Prelims (Lakewood)
Wed-May 31 — @ Cascade League Finals (Lakewood)

Hark! The squeaking of shoes on hardwood floors approaches.

God’s chosen sport — basketball — kicks off Oct. 31 with the first day of practice for the Coupeville Middle School boys hoops program.

High school teams begin in mid-November, while the CMS girls claim the court early in the new year.

But first up are the middle school boys, who will be led by returning coaches Jon Roberts and Craig Anderson.

Once they have enough practices under their belts, the Wolves kick off an eight-game season which runs from mid-Nov. to mid-Dec.
