Sandahl sisters queens of the waterway

The sisters rule the water.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl helped the Seattle Pacific University women’s rowing team thrash arch-rival Western Washington University at the Falcon Regatta Saturday morning.

The duo played major roles for the SPU varsity 4+ boat, which won its two races by almost a full five and seven seconds, respectively.

Overall, Seattle Pacific swept to victory in all six races contested on the L.W. Ship Canal course.

During the varsity 4+ races, Sophie, who celebrated Senior Night festivities this week, was in the #3 seat, while her lil’ sis dictated the pace of the attack from her coxswain position.

SPU, which is highly-rated this season, returns to action Apr. 15-16, when the squad travels to Cherry Hills, New Jersey for the Knecht Cup.

The Sandahls, who were sports and academic standouts as high schoolers, both attended Coupeville schools after the family moved to Whidbey from South Carolina.

Lucy graduated from CHS after playing volleyball and track for the Wolves, while Sophie went up north and finished at my alma mater, Oak Harbor High School, where she competed with the Wildcat swim team.

Coupeville college stars shine brightly

All across the USA, former Wolves were on the prowl Saturday.

Whether it was track and field, rowing, or baseball, Coupeville grads were knee deep in college sports.

A look at CHS alumni in action:

 

Ja’Tarya Hoskins:

The former Wolf cheerleader and track star ran in the 200 at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, hitting the tape in 30.52 seconds.

Hoskins is a redshirt sophomore at Saint Martin’s University and on target to graduate this spring.

Joey Lippo:

The former Wolf three-sport star racked up three hits, three walks, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base while playing a pair of baseball doubleheaders in Boston this weekend.

A junior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Lippo continues to be one of the true bright spots for an Owls team struggling to find a winning groove.

On the season, he’s hitting .283 with 14 hits, including a triple and a home run.

Lippo has scored eight times, while picking up six RBI and walking six times.

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University freshman was also at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational, where he claimed 2nd place in the discus.

Besting 14 of 15 rivals, Martin heaved the throwing implement 128 feet, nine inches.

 

Lucy and Sophie Sandahl:

The sister combo was on the waters at the Husky Open Saturday, competing for Seattle Pacific University in women’s rowing.

Lucy was the coxswain for a pair of varsity 4+ boats which finished second to powerful Cal Poly in four-team fields, while Sophie manned an oar as the Falcons varsity 8+ crew zipped along.

The Sandahl sisters return to action Apr. 1, when SPU hosts the Falcon Regatta.

Sandahl sisters rule the water

Splish-splash, Seattle University can’t catch them.

Sparked by their Coupeville sister supernovas, Lucy and Sophie Sandahl, the Seattle Pacific University rowing team held off its main challenger Sunday at the Head of the Lake Regatta.

Sophie Sandahl was in the bow seat for SPU’s first boat, while her younger sister was coxswain in boat #2.

Both boats carried eight Falcons apiece, with 15 boats in the water between the two races.

Head of the Lake starts at Gas Works Park in Seattle, and finishes on the other side of the cut.

Sunday’s regatta capped the fall racing schedule for SPU and the Sandahl sisters.

The Falcons have one more week of practice, then take a month off for winter break.

Training starts again Jan. 4, with spring racing kicking off in March.

Sandahl sisters splash to more success

The sisters that row together stay together.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl are back in the boat, competing with Seattle Pacific University.

The Falcons kicked off a new season Sunday with an appearance at the American Lake Fall Classic in Lakewood.

The Sandahl sisters shared the same boat in the 4+ race, with Lucy directing the boat as coxswain, while Sophie rowed out of the second seat.

Sophie actually pulled double duty on the day, also rowing in the 8+ race as well, which meant she put in a full 10K in the water.

Seattle Pacific returns to action Nov. 6 with an appearance at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle.

That race, which is a 5-6K, starts at Gas Works and ends on the other side of the cut.

Lineups are still being worked out, but the chances of the Sandahl sisters making an appearance are remarkably high.

Splash Sisters row with big Dawgs

Sophie and Lucy Sandahl aren’t afraid to cross oars with anyone.

The Coupeville sisters took to the water Saturday, helping NCAA D-II Seattle Pacific University vie in one of the premier rowing events in Washington state.

The Sandahl siblings and their Falcon teammates participated in the Windermere Cup regatta, which went down on the Montlake Cut in Seattle and celebrates the opening day of boating season.

SPU’s open eight boat, with Lucy as coxswain and big sis Sophie rowing from the bow, gave regatta host University of Washington a strong push in their race before finishing second.

The Huskies compete for a D-I rowing program with a long tradition of excellence, but the Sandahls — in a boat with six novice college rowers — stayed close.

The Falcons zipped across the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 38.14 seconds.

Coupeville’s finest were joined on the journey by teammates Megan Rouse, Bella Sangston, Addie Clark, Meghan Rustemeyer, Nicole Svoboda, Ingrid Erickson, and Emma Ely.

Up next for SPU is the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships May 14 at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Oregon.

When not in the boat, both Sandahl sisters are hard at work pursuing degrees.

Sophie is a junior studying art history, while Lucy, a sophomore, studies physiology.
