Yes, I know snowflakes came down in Coupeville today, and yet, here we are, a little over 100 hours until “spring” sports start.

De … light … ful.

In the words of former CHS softball coach Amy King, who will be safely tucked away inside when practice begins Monday:

“I would think everyone’s hopes and dreams would be for it to warm up and not have freezing temperatures for their first day of practice!”

But anyways, as I mentally plan for another season on the howling Hellscape that is the prairie in “spring,” Wolf athletes (and their moms) are much more upbeat.

Four of them, in fact, are downright excited about the start of outdoor sports.

CHS senior Jacob Zettle returns to the baseball field, while sophomores Lucy Sandahl and Raven Vick head back to the world of track and field.

Going along with them is Dawnelle Conlisk, mom of Wolf junior distance runner Danny.

While her son, a veteran of three state meets (two in track, one in cross country) prefers to let his actions speak louder than his words, mom is part of an exuberantly vocal band of loyal supporters who follow the track and field squad from town to town.

As we count down the hours until the first practice (and hope the snowflakes go away), some thoughts on hopes, dreams and goals for Coupeville’s last season in the 1A Olympic League.

Jacob Zettle:

This year in baseball I hope to play varsity; I hope to take our league again.

One of my many dreams is that we can all as a team say a prayer in the field before every game.

Raven Vick:

Goals for this track season: throwing at least 110 feet in javelin, but my overall goal is 130 feet to beat the school record!

Dawnelle Conlisk:

Spring sport mama is ready for the season and looking forward to Danny getting sub-50 seconds in the 400, sub 5-minutes on the mile (which mile one at state for XC was 5:05 or 5:11).

Totally possible.

And achieving a school record, with a scholarship to be the total cherry on top.

Going to be one really exciting season … if you ask Danny, his reply isn’t anywhere near as exciting as his crazy mom.

Lucy Sandahl:

My hopes for the upcoming track season may be like everyone else’s but to a certain degree are kinda different.

I feel like a typical answer for this is to make it to state and get multiple PR’s; even though that would be such an amazing experience, I want something more.

I want to test my limits physically and mentally.

I want to be able to hit a point that my body has never experienced.

I want to be able to cross that finish line every time feeling like I can’t move and am gasping for breath; that is when I’ll know that I’ve accomplished that goal.

Your body can always accomplish something if you put your mind and heart to it.

That is my goal for the season.

Though it may seem crazy, to a certain degree it can be the most glorious feeling.

Die-hard Coupeville High School spring sports fan? Gas up the car and get ready to enjoy ferry life.

All five Wolf teams have more road games than home contests during their final spin through the Olympic League, with softball getting the shortest end of the stick.

The CHS sluggers, who went 19-5 last season and came within a strike of making the state tourney, are scheduled to play 12 of 20 regular-season games away from their home field.

Baseball (11 of 20 on the road), girls tennis (9 of 17) and boys soccer (8 of 15), have it slightly better, while track, as usual, spends 98.2% of its season away from home.

The Wolves do host one high school track meet (Mar. 28 vs. Port Townsend, Klahowya and Chimacum), which will be the first one to go down in front of the school’s new grandstand.

Boys soccer gets to debut the new stadium, when it hosts 2A non-conference foe Olympic Mar. 10.

Will there be cake to celebrate the debut of the shiny new grandstand? We can only hope!

Another milestone is set to arrive May 7, when the Wolf softball squad plays its final regular-season game.

Chimacum is the foe that day, and the bout is the last regular-season conference game in any sport Coupeville will play against a 1A Olympic League opponent.

After a four-year run in their current league, the Wolves jump to the new six-team North Sound Conference with the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

As you peruse the schedules below, remember, weather, ferries and other assorted problems can, and will, likely rip them to shreds at some point.

The CHS boys soccer squad kicks off a series of team portraits.

Up next, your Wolf softball squad.

The varsity baseball team is back in black.

Rackets at the ready, the Wolf tennis team is intent on winning a third-straight league title.

The JV baseball team is ready to swing for the fences.

They had to use the wide-angle lens to capture the largest track team in CHS history.

Netters (l to r) Abby Hamilton, Sophie Fürtjes and Julie Bucio enjoy their time inside where it’s warm and dry.

Through rain and wind and all sorts of “spring”-like weather, the cameraman always delivers.

Mainly by staying inside where it’s dry and relatively warm.

Thursday was photo day for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, and wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken was a busy, busy man.

The pics seen above are courtesy him.

As the various Wolf teams wade into action starting this Saturday (weather permitting), we’ll have much more here on Coupeville Sports.

But to see every Fisken pic and buy some (purchases fund college scholarships for CHS student/athletes), keep an eye on:

Fleet-footed Abby Parker, perfectly capturing the look of every track athlete who kind of wished the season didn’t start until June.

Now, we’re not trying to hurry basketball out of the gym.

Having endured more than one “spring” on the prairie, I would be perfectly willing to wait until May or June for spring sports to start.

But, the powers that be don’t agree with me, so here we are, less than three weeks until the first day of practice pops up Monday, Feb. 27.

The first games hit Saturday, Mar. 11, and the first time we’ll ever be warm at a game will arrive the day AFTER spring sports end.

Anyway… Here’s your 98.3% correct schedules.

While there may be a tweak or two to come (and weather can, and will, mess everything up at some point), this is pretty close to being ready for the ol’ lamination machine.

Three side notes here.

One, CHS track gets its first home meet in many a year, as the brand-new oval makes its debut Mar. 30.

And your eyes don’t deceive you — the Wolf softball squad gets an honest-to-goodness home doubleheader Apr. 3, when they welcome Blaine to town during Spring Break.

Finally, baseball’s opening day, especially if you look at it on the Olympic League site, is a little confusing.

It lists the Wolves playing at home against La Conner and on the road at Lynden Christian, when in reality both games will be played on the road.

It’s a three-team doubleheader at Lynden, with Coupeville considered the home team in the La Conner game … even though they won’t really be at home.

Got that?

The diamond women have the spring’s most favorable schedule, with 12 of 20 at home.

Baseball (10 of 20 or “11” of 20, if we’re counting the road “home” game) and boys soccer (8 of 15) also play on Whidbey more times than not.

Only girls tennis (6 of 15) and track (1 of 8) will be true road warriors.

Friday didn’t really feel all that much like tennis weather.

The sun crawled away, the wind got blustery and guess what? Buckle up, cause if past springs are any indication, it’ll probably be like that more often than not.

Experienced netters came to practice wearing several layers, as Coupeville prepared for a season in which it will defend its 1A Olympic League crown.

The first real match is not until Mar. 14 (home against non-league foe Granite Falls), but the Wolves will be battle-ready (or at least weather-ready) by then.
