The battle for the top spot rages on.

The week ahead features at least one major showdown, and competition for all five of Coupeville High School’s fall sports teams.

Looming over everything is Tuesday’s volleyball match in Shoreline between the Wolves and King’s, which is a brawl for sole possession of first-place in the North Sound Conference.

Both squads are 3-0 in league play, with CHS having knocked off previously-undefeated South Whidbey last week in an epic five-set thriller.

Win or lose, the spikers will still have six league matches on the schedule after the King’s showdown, offering plenty of time for things to ebb and flow in the standings.

Volleyball has a second match this coming week, a non-conference home tilt against Port Townsend, while soccer, tennis and cross country all play twice as well.

Capping things off, Coupeville football has its Homecoming game Friday, Oct. 5.

Having narrowly lost to King’s in their conference opener, the Wolves will be looking to rebound and stay relevant in the playoff chase.

As we prepare to flip the calendar to Oct., a look at standings through Sept. 30:

Wolf volleyball ace Emma Mathusek scopes out the action.

We’re headed into the heart of league play.

The week ahead offers Coupeville High School fall sports teams plenty of opportunity to make a statement in North Sound Conference action, with eight clashes spread among four teams.

The biggest, by far, is Tuesday’s volleyball showdown between the Wolves and South Whidbey in Langley, pitting the only two undefeated league foes, in any sport, in a head-to-head match-up.

Second-biggest?

Probably Friday’s home football game, when Coupeville opens league play against a more-battered-than-normal version of King’s.

But every game counts, and come Sept. 30, the league standings could look much different than they do on this Sunday.

Volleyball is crushing it, but football took a big step back.

While the spikers in the North Sound Conference haven’t played a single league match yet — that begins this coming week — the six teams have combined to thrash a variety of outsiders.

Led by Coupeville and South Whidbey, which are the last two NSC fall sports teams still capable of pulling off an unbeaten season, the league’s volleyball squads are a combined 15-4.

That’s a big step up on football, where five of six teams suffered a loss Friday in the third week of non-conference play.

Meanwhile, soccer and tennis are the only sports where conference mates have clashed.

While it’s still (very, very) early, Coupeville and King’s sit atop the pile, with two league wins to their credit.

The Wolves have won a game on both the pitch and the courts, while the Knights don’t play tennis.

Cedar Park Christian and Granite Falls have one league win apiece, while Sultan and South Whidbey are still looking to collect that first W in the first year of the league.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Which should be for about a hot second.

Two days into a new athletic year, King’s High School, which boasts 50+ state titles in its storied history, sits in dead-last place in both sports in which North Sound Conference teams have started playing.

And yes, we’re talking one whole game in both football and girls soccer, and yes, we’re talking a non-conference game at that, and yes, I’m being kinda snarky and petty.

Welcome back to getting needled on a regular basis, you private school princes and princesses, you.

Anyways, at the moment, both Coupeville and South Whidbey, public schools competing with only athletes who live inside their boundaries, are a flawless 1-0 for the 2018-2019 school year and King’s is 0-2.

Quick, someone get their daddy to go donate some dollars to the athlete recruiting budget, stat!

Heh heh…

With volleyball and tennis getting rolling this coming week, the only sports which have played games that count in the win/loss columns are football and soccer.

King’s, the defending 1A state champs on the pitch, were nipped 1-0 by 3A Lakeside, a team which fell in the state quarterfinals a season ago.

In the world of the gridiron, Coupeville whacked Port Townsend 28-18, South Whidbey slipped past Friday Harbor 20-19, Sultan thrashed Vashon Island 55-0, Cedar Park Christian waxed Chimacum 47-7, Granite Falls was squashed 42-0 by Shorewood and King’s fell flat in a 31-13 loss to Lakewood.

Maggie Crimmins and CHS tennis swept two league matches this week to claim control of first-place in the 1A Olympic League. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Let the jockeying begin.

In a week where many teams were beset by the never-ending rain, two of the four Olympic League races we’re tracking had changes at the top of the standings.

In baseball, Chimacum, which has never finished higher than third in the previous three seasons of the conference, jumped past Coupeville and into first-place.

A one-run win put the Cowboys a game up on the Wolves, but there’s still two-thirds of the league season to play — including two more bouts between these very two teams.

Over on the tennis courts, not a single league match had been played prior to this week.

That’s changed, and with back-to-back wins at the tail end of the week, the Coupeville netters staked a solid claim to being a favorite to win a fourth straight crown.

While softball (Coupeville) and boys soccer (Klahowya) didn’t change leaders, none of the races are anywhere close to being decided yet, ensuring several more weeks of excitement.

Maybe.

Softball, thanks to the unique challenges raised by Port Townsend and Chimacum abandoning their programs this season due to a lack of players, could be settled five days from now.

If CHS beats Klahowya Friday at home, the Wolves, with wins in the first two of three games the squads will play, will clinch their first softball title since 2002.

An Eagle upset (Coupeville won 15-1 Mar. 28 and weather has kept KSS sidelined since that day) and the championship would come down to an Apr. 30 meeting in Silverdale.

And, speaking of upsets, the most unexpected score came from the world of baseball, where Port Townsend shocked Klahowya 6-2 Friday.

The win snapped a 48-game losing skid for the RedHawks, who last won Apr. 9, 2015, and sent the Eagles, the defending champs, crashing into the cellar.

My, oh my.

Current standings through Apr. 15:

Olympic League baseball:

School League Overall
Chimacum 3-0 5-5
COUPEVILLE 2-1 7-4
Port Townsend 1-3 1-6
Klahowya 1-3 2-8

Olympic League boys soccer:

School League Overall
Klahowya 4-0 7-2-1
COUPEVILLE 3-1 4-4-2
Port Townsend 1-3 1-6-0
Chimacum 0-4 0-6-0

Olympic League girls tennis:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 2-0 3-5
Chimacum 0-1 1-6
Klahowya 0-1 1-5

Olympic League softball:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 1-0 7-3
Klahowya 0-1 5-2
