Cassidy Moody is one to watch.

The Coupeville High School freshman has thrown her name into state title contention in the past week, setting a PR in the high jump at Thursday’s home track meet.

Clearing an even five feet, she vaults all the way into a tie for the third-best performance by a 1A girl this spring, just four inches off state leader Sienna Swannack of Lakeside (Nine Mile).

Moody’s charge into the top 10 gives CHS eight athletes (five girls and three boys) who currently sit in the top 10 in at least one event among all 1A athletes this spring.

The Wolves narrowly miss out on having nine, as sophomore Danny Conlisk sits at #11 in the 400 and #12 in the 800.

Coupeville’s top 10 performances as of Sunday morning:

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (3rd) 16.30

4 x 100 — Roberts, Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout, Lauren Grove (5th) 52.69

4 x 200 — Grove, Toomey-Stout, Kortuem, Roberts (6th) 1:51.51

High Jump — Cassidy Moody (3rd) 5-00

Wins all around.

Taking advantage of the first gloriously sunny afternoon of the spring, the Coupeville High School track and field team officially debuted its new facilities Thursday in style.

Then the Wolves went out and whupped up on some folks.

Led by double-event winner Danny Conlisk, the CHS boys finished first in the five-team meet, while the Wolf girls were a close second to traditional power Mount Vernon Christian.

On the guys side things played out to the following tune:

Coupeville 93
Port Townsend 86
Mt. Vernon Christian 75.99
Klahowya 56
Chimacum 27

Meanwhile, on the girls side:

Mt. Vernon Christian 112.75
Coupeville 101
Klahowya 64.25
Port Townsend 49
Chimacum 21

Conlisk ran to wins in the 400 and 800, while Jacob Smith (100), Chris Battaglia (discus), Skyler Lawrence (shot put), Cassidy Moody (high jump) and the girls 4 x 100 also finished at the top of the heap.

The relay squad was composed of freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem, sophomore Lindsey Roberts and senior Lauren Grove.

Overall, Coupeville athletes recorded 43 PRs in the debut of their new home track.

It’s official.

The new Coupeville High School track and field facilities saw its first multi-team meet action Thursday, as the Wolves welcomed four other schools to town.

While results haven’t been posted yet, we have some photos to take your mind off that matter.

They come to us courtesy John Fisken, who ambled down to Cow Town before heading off to vacation.

They stared down the big boys (and girls).

Facing off with three much-larger schools, the Coupeville High School track and field squad claimed five wins and 31 PRs Thursday at a six-team meet in Port Angeles.

The 1A Wolves, who went up against 2A schools Olympic, Kingston and Port Angeles, as well as 1B teams Clallam Bay and Neah Bay, did well across the board.

Coupeville got wins from Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles), Jacob Smith (200), Danny Conlisk (800), Jacob Martin (javelin) and the girls 4 x 100 relay team.

That unit, which consists of two returning members from a squad which placed 6th at state last year, and two newcomers, was running together for the first time in competition.

Lauren Grove, a senior, and Roberts, a sophomore, are the holdovers, while freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem are replacing the graduated Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone.

Along with the wins, CHS nabbed seven second-place finishes, including two from senior thrower Skyler Lawrence (shot put, discus).
