Last banquet, last honors

They hit the final tape.

Coupeville High School track and field athletes wrapped their season — and the run of spring awards banquets — Thursday night.

Following on the heels of softball, baseball, and girls’ tennis, the school’s largest spring sports squad handed out varsity letters and participation certificates.

CHS coaches, led by Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin, also honored Erica McGrath and Hank Milnes as four-year athletes and hailed the 18 Wolves who went to state.

“We loved watching so many amazing athletes!”

There is an ending to everything.

The 2023-2024 prep sports year hit the tape Wednesday, with the Coupeville Middle School track and field team wrapping up the two-day Cascade League Championships.

After a season of less-than-stellar weather and outstanding performances, Wolf coach Amber Wyman was ready for a nap, but also had some thoughts about all that transpired.

Her exit interview:

I am so proud of these athletes!

They worked hard and really strived to accomplish their goals!

A few notables: Zariyah Allen has been practicing the discus at home and asked for a discus for her birthday and the effort paid off today with a 15-foot PR!

Tamsin Ward did amazing and came away with two first place medals and two second place.

A big shout out to my daughter Devon and Mikayla Wagner who started their track training 12 weeks early to get in shape for the season and it really paid off!

They would get together after school and run so that they would PR early in our short season.

Henry Bailey came out to try track for the first time and did amazing.

I have now declared him a ‘track and cross-country kid’ so let’s hope he listens. 🙂

We loved watching so many other amazing and wonderful athletes (that are too numerous to name) that came out nearly every day to do better and be better.

And sadly, Hyley Farrell will be leaving us for Texas, so this was her last Coupeville sport she will play. We will miss her!

Congrats to all of our athletes on a successful middle school season, whether first, second or last!

Ward, Allen wow ’em at track finale

One, a coronation. The other, a most pleasant surprise.

The Coupeville Middle School track and field team put a stamp on the 2024 season Wednesday at day two of the Cascade League Championships in Lakewood, winning two individual titles.

The first, a triumph in the 100 from Tamsin Ward, was a thunderous uppercut.

It gave the Wolf 7th grader her second league title of the season, following a win in the shot-put last week, and her 12th victory of this campaign.

That pushes Ward one win ahead of the 11 she nailed down as a 6th grader and ties her with future high school state champ Alex Murdy for the second-best performance by a CMS athlete since 2008.

Only Lindsey Roberts, with 18 wins in 2015, tops the duo, and both she and Murdy did their winning work as 8th graders.

And why 2008? That’s as far back as athletic.net has CMS track marks recorded.

Wednesday’s second title was a bit more of a surprise, as 6th grader Zariyah Allen made them bow down in the discus.

Chucking the implement a stunning 15 feet further than her previous PR, she captured her second-ever win as a CMS track supernova and did it on the season’s biggest stage.

“Zariyah’s second throw was perfect,” said Wolf coach Jon Gabelein.

“While I knew it was much farther than she has ever thrown before, she was surprised that the official confirmed the measurement.

“Passing her previous record by 15 feet is amazing.”

Wednesday’s rumble, a seven-team showdown, finished with South Whidbey winning both girls team crowns, while King’s (6th/7th) and Lakewood (8th) split the boys titles.

Coupeville might not have had the depth to topple their bigger-school rivals in the team standings, but, to an athlete, they impressed their coaches.

“Throughout our season, students were able to see how strong efforts turn into even stronger abilities,” Gabelein said.

They’ve amassed a mighty mountain of medals

One Tyler King to rule them all.

Through the “modern era” of state high school track and field state meets (1963-2024), no Coupeville athlete has brought home as many medals as Randy and Laurie’s youngest child.

He sits with 11, including two state titles, one slim medal ahead of older brother Kyle, who notched 10 during his CHS days.

This past weekend, three more Wolves — Reese Wilkinson, Axel Marshall, and Nick Guay — joined the club, pushing it to 90 members.

Meanwhile Carly Burt and Cael Wilson each claimed their second career medal, moving up the list.

There are five active Wolves on the list, headed up by Lyla Stuurmans, who has three medals and counting with one more season of eligibility left.

Burt, Wilson, Marshall, and Zac Tackett can also return next spring, as could Monroe Myles, who we’re not currently counting as active, as she didn’t participate this year.

She earned three medals as a sophomore in 2023, however, and could return for a senior swan song.

As one season slips away, and the work already begins for another for some, a look at the CHS all-time medal count:

Reese rocks the joint!

For 34 years, no one has come close to Jennie (Cross) Prince.

Then along came Reese.

Putting together the best afternoon of her track and field career on the final day of her high school athletic career, Coupeville senior Reese Wilkinson made history Saturday at the 2B state championship meet in Yakima.

Chucking the discus 121 feet, 10 inches, she broke her own PR by almost 10 and a half feet and took down the school mark of 120-03 set back in 1990.

While Prince still holds the CHS girls’ record in the shot put — under her maiden name — she was thrilled to see one of her marks finally toppled by the young women who have followed in her footsteps.

“Awesome!!! Congratulations to Reese!!!!” she said.

Wilkinson, like the woman she will replace on the school’s track record board, finished 2nd at state, one of three medals claimed by Coupeville athletes on the final day of the three-day extravaganza.

Sophomore Carly Burt sailed to a 5th place finish in the pole vault, while senior Nick Guay notched another 5th, this one in the high jump.

The trio join freshmen Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson, who finished 5th and 8th, respectively, in the pole vault Friday.

Burt and Wilson have two state meet medals to their credit now, with more time to add to that total.

Among active Wolves, they trail only current junior Lyla Stuurmans, who has three to her credit.

Marshall, Guay, and Wilkinson became the 88th, 89th, and 90th Wolves to earn a medal since the modern era of state track and field meets began in 1964.
