Zip, fling, win — again and again

The finish line inches closer.

With another week of track and field action in the books, the Top 10 rankings for 2B shift, with new names popping up in places, and Coupeville High School making its presence felt.

As of Apr. 10, there are 18 Wolves on the big leaderboard, with CHS owning two #1 slots.

Super sophomore Lyla Stuurmans remains atop the girls 400 rankings, while a boy’s relay team of Tim Ursu, Tate Wyman, Aidan Wilson, and Dominic Coffman are your new leaders in the 4 x 100.

Wilson is currently in the Top 10 in five different events, which is one more than the limit for Washington state prep athletes during a meet.

The Wolf senior is one of eight Wolves to appear more than once, with junior Nick Guay showing up three times.

With two regular season meets left in April, and then the league/districts/state gauntlet in May, things can (and will) still change.

But for now, here’s where the Wolves land among the best in 2B:

Welcome to the big show.

The Coupeville High School track and field team traveled to Bellingham Saturday to wage war with much larger schools during the 13th Annual Birger Solberg Track & Field Invitational.

The event drew 54 schools, covering every classification in Washington state (4A-1B), while also hauling in teams from Alaska and British Columbia.

Shorewood, a 3A school, won the team titles, with their girl’s squad holding off 2A Anacortes 76.5-65, and their boys nipping 4A Kamiak 71-68.

Coupeville, repping a 2B institution, scored above its weight class, claiming 20th (girls) and 26th (boys).

Wolf senior Alex Murdy delivered the day’s best performance, finishing 2nd out of 42 competitors in the long jump.

Senior Ryanne Knoblich was 3rd in the high jump while vying with 28 other athletes, while sophomore Lyla Stuurmans — already the fastest female 400 runner in 2B — set a PR in her event.

Coupeville is off for two weeks, at least in terms of competitions, returning to action Saturday, Apr. 22 at the GearUp Eason Invitational in Snohomish.

Top Wolves vie for track glory

Six down, three to go.

Having cleared March and sailed into April, the Coupeville High School track and field team is two-thirds of the way through its regular season meets.

The Wolves have that aforementioned trio of events on the schedule this month, which will take them to Bellingham, Snohomish, and Lakewood, then open the postseason with the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships May 3.

With one eye on current things, and one eye on the upcoming gauntlet of league, district, and state meets, Coupeville’s top athletes are all trying to post their best times and distances.

As of Apr. 3, there are 14 Wolves — nine boys and five girls — who hold a spot in the top 10 in at least one event when all 2B athletes are compared.

Senior Aidan Wilson leads the way, with five appearances on the big chart, while Dominic Coffman, Carolyn Lhamon, Nick Guay, Mitchell Hall, and Tate Wyman pop up twice.

Wolf sophomore sensation Lyla Stuurmans is currently the only Coupeville competitor to be ranked #1 in an event, as she has the fastest 400 run of the season.

There’s no slowing their roll.

Two days out from a dominant performance at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet, the Coupeville High School track and field team remained hot Friday while facing off with bigger schools.

Competing at the eight-team Trojan Twilight in Meridian, the Wolves claimed seven individual wins, with their boys finishing second in the team standings, and their girls landing in third place.

Host Meridian, a 1A school, held off Coupeville 185-154 in the boy’s battle, while no other team tallied more than 73 points on the day.

On the girl’s side, Meridian nipped Mount Vernon Christian 140.5-137.5, with the Wolves earning a rock-solid 97 points.

The meet featured four 1A schools — Meridian, Mount Baker, Blaine, and Nooksack Valley — with Coupeville and Friday Harbor repping 2B and MVC and Lummi Nation hailing from the 1B classification.

Aidan Wilson was the top Wolf, winning both the 400 and 800, while Ryanne Knoblich and Nick Guay swept the high jump titles.

Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Mitchell Hall (1600), and Lyla Stuurmans (400) also claimed the top spot on the awards podium with their performances.

In addition to their four wins, the Wolf boys also had seven 2nd place finishes, helping boost their team point totals.

Coupeville is scheduled to be back in action next Saturday, Apr. 8 at the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

Wolf track rocks the oval

Statement, made.

The Coupeville High School track and field team rolled into Mount Vernon Wednesday and lit up the joint at an 11-team meet.

By the time the day was done, the Wolves had racked up 11 wins, collected 70 PR’s, and won both girls and boys team titles.

Though CHS didn’t get proper credit for some of their performances until Thursday, as scoring and computer imputing issues plagued the meet.

Once things were (mostly) settled, the Wolf girls surged ahead of Mount Vernon Christian in the final team standings, winning a 198-191 duel.

Third place Friday Harbor was well back with 67 points.

On the boy’s side of things, the Wolves were dominant, racking up 212 points, putting them way ahead of MVC (128) and La Conner (96.5)

The Wolves return to action quickly, traveling to Meridian Friday for the Trojan Twilight meet.
