There’s no slowing their roll.

Two days out from a dominant performance at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet, the Coupeville High School track and field team remained hot Friday while facing off with bigger schools.

Competing at the eight-team Trojan Twilight in Meridian, the Wolves claimed seven individual wins, with their boys finishing second in the team standings, and their girls landing in third place.

Host Meridian, a 1A school, held off Coupeville 185-154 in the boy’s battle, while no other team tallied more than 73 points on the day.

On the girl’s side, Meridian nipped Mount Vernon Christian 140.5-137.5, with the Wolves earning a rock-solid 97 points.

The meet featured four 1A schools — Meridian, Mount Baker, Blaine, and Nooksack Valley — with Coupeville and Friday Harbor repping 2B and MVC and Lummi Nation hailing from the 1B classification.

Aidan Wilson was the top Wolf, winning both the 400 and 800, while Ryanne Knoblich and Nick Guay swept the high jump titles.

Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Mitchell Hall (1600), and Lyla Stuurmans (400) also claimed the top spot on the awards podium with their performances.

In addition to their four wins, the Wolf boys also had seven 2nd place finishes, helping boost their team point totals.

Coupeville is scheduled to be back in action next Saturday, Apr. 8 at the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

Wolf track rocks the oval

Statement, made.

The Coupeville High School track and field team rolled into Mount Vernon Wednesday and lit up the joint at an 11-team meet.

By the time the day was done, the Wolves had racked up 11 wins, collected 70 PR’s, and won both girls and boys team titles.

Though CHS didn’t get proper credit for some of their performances until Thursday, as scoring and computer imputing issues plagued the meet.

Once things were (mostly) settled, the Wolf girls surged ahead of Mount Vernon Christian in the final team standings, winning a 198-191 duel.

Third place Friday Harbor was well back with 67 points.

On the boy’s side of things, the Wolves were dominant, racking up 212 points, putting them way ahead of MVC (128) and La Conner (96.5)

Coupeville’s wins came courtesy Lyla Stuurmans (400), Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Aleera Kent (800), Cameron Epp (3200), Claire Mayne (100 hurdles), Zac Tackett (discus), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Alex Murdy (long jump), Dominic Coffman (high jump) and the boys 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay units.

The Wolves return to action quickly, traveling to Meridian Friday for the Trojan Twilight meet.

Wolves welcome new coaches

No more open jobs.

For the moment, at least.

Coupeville High School/Middle School Athletic Director Willie Smith has filled coaching positions for CHS girls’ soccer and CMS track and field.

Kim Kisch, one of the first booters to play for the Wolf program when it launched in 2004, is coming back around to call the shots as head coach starting next fall.

She replaces Kyle Nelson, who retired at the end of the most-recent season.

Meanwhile, Amber Wyman, already hired to coach middle school cross country, will also pick up coaching duties with the CMS track and field program.

Returning coach Jon Gabelein and Wyman welcome a new squad to the first day of practice Apr. 10, with a six-meet schedule running Apr. 26-May 31.

Before becoming a head coach, Wyman was an assistant helping middle school (now high school) running guru Elizabeth Bitting.

Both hires will be official once approved by the school board.

Wolves bid for track glory

The numbers tell a positive story.

As the high school track and field season continues to unfold, Coupeville, which has its biggest roster in decades, continues to draw notice.

The latest accolade comes from Evans Rankings, whose computer currently ranks the Wolf boys as the #3 team in 2B, while placing the CHS girls at #6.

Chewelah’s boys and Okanogan’s girls top those standings at the moment.

Plus, scan the results on Athletic.net, and you’ll find a large pack of Wolves hanging out in the upper echelons, as well.

Wolves spring into early-season perfection

Pristine so far.

The three Coupeville High School spring sports teams to keep track of win/loss records are all undefeated in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Of course, since the new season is still barely upon us, a combined 3-0 mark in conference rumbles isn’t yet enough to earn the Wolves any league titles.

But it’s a good start.

Mother Nature willing, Coupeville teams have a busy week ahead, with each of the four spring programs having at least two events on the schedule.

Wolf softball and baseball top things with three games apiece.

The hardball nine hit the road Mar. 28 and Mar. 30, playing Friday Harbor and Mount Vernon Christian, respectively, then close the week at home Apr. 1 with a tilt against visiting Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, the softball sluggers travel to Friday Harbor with baseball, before hosting Cedar Park Christian-Bothell Mar. 31 and Orcas the next day.

Coupeville’s net crew will be in Granite Falls Mar. 27, before playing at home Mar. 31 against Friday Harbor.

And finally, Wolf track and field has a pair of road trips, heading to Mount Vernon Mar. 29 for a league meet, before making an appearance Mar. 31 at the Trojan Twilight meet in Meridian.
