Danny Conlisk is in a hurry to get places.

The Coupeville High School freshman, who tore up the track oval as a middle school runner — going a perfect 7-0 in the 1600 — is right back at it one step higher up the competition ladder.

Three meets in, Conlisk has run in the 200, 400, 1500 and 1600 for the Wolves, and would like to try the 800 soon.

While he’s done well in sprints, the lure of the marquee event is hard to ignore.

“The mile is my favorite event, because I enjoy long distance,” Conlisk said.

He picked up the track bug last year and joined the CMS team “because I simply enjoy running.”

Now that he’s on his way to being a grizzled veteran, Conlisk has discovered he enjoys almost everything about the sport.

“The team, friends, running, competing and beating my PRs” are just a few of the things the freshman phenom would put in the plus column.

While he feels strong both in distance and sprint races, Conlisk would like to “work on my form, to improve even more.”

“My goal is to get my mile run under five minutes,” he said.

“Last meet I ran the 400 for the first time, winning my heat and coming in fifth behind four seniors overall,” Conlisk added. “It would be really cool to win the 400 overall in a meet.”

A big fan of comedy movies (“I like to laugh”) and his PE class, he uses his computer to stay in touch with people from all stages of his life.

“I enjoy playing video games,” Conlisk said. “Since I have lived a military kids life, it lets me keep up with my friends far away.”

His biggest fans, however, are closely following his athletic exploits.

“My mom and dad have made the biggest impact on my life, since I have spent most of my time with them,” Conlisk said. “They make sure I do what I need to do.

“They are pretty awesome and support me big in track.”

He’s the Easy Rider.

For the last four years, Mitchell Losey has made it look easy, cruising through life with a grin on his face and a low-key attitude that is refreshing.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has had an impact both on the football field and the track oval for the Wolves, continuing a proud family tradition that stretches back several generations.

Through it all, he has never been one to thump his chest and demand his time in the spotlight.

Losey has been the ultimate team warrior, a guy willing to get down in the trenches and do the hard work, the dirty work.

His teammates and coaches know what kind of player he is, and accord him respect, and so should we as fans.

Mitchell has been the very definition of solid, on and off the field, and he has represented the family legacy very well.

He may be handing over the keys to the kingdom to younger brother Shane and getting ready to head off into the real world, but he’ll always be a Wolf first and foremost.

Parents Scott and Melissa should be proud of the solid young man they have raised.

Mitchell is a class act (and he stars in one of my favorite photos ever snapped) and I want to wish him all the best on his cake day.

Happy birthday, Mr. Losey. Keep on keepin’ on.

Lindsey Roberts (left) and Makana Stone are half of the fastest 4 x 200 girls relay team in 1A.

The relay teams were on fire.

Competing against three 2A schools Thursday at North Kitsap, the Coupeville High School girls 4 x 200 relay unit put together the fastest time run this season by a 1A school.

Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt, Lindsey Roberts and Makana Stone toasted their big school foes, zipping across the finish line in 1:48.40 for the Wolves lone win on the day.

The same foursome also finished second in the 4 x 100, trailing just Olympic.

Coupeville’s time of 52.17 is the second-fastest by a 1A school this season (trailing just Lynden Christian), while Olympic’s winning time of 51.75 is second-fastest in 2A.

The relay rumblings capped a day in which 20 Wolves combined to set 30 PRs.

Senior thrower Dominic Dausey set career bests in shot put, discus and javelin to lead the way, while eight other CHS athletes achieved a pair of PRs.

While Coupeville got strong individual efforts, it didn’t have the depth to upend North Kitsap, Sequim or Olympic in team scoring battles.

Birthday boys Sebastian Davis (S) and Jacob Smith (J) team up for a collage full of excitement. (John Fisken and Wendy McCormick photos)

Birthday fever is bouncing around out of control in Coupeville today.

Two of the most energetic of all Wolf athletes — CHS senior Sebastian Davis and sophomore Jacob Smith — share a cake day, and a style of attacking the day, every day.

Regardless of the sport (Davis plays tennis and soccer currently while Smith careens around the gridiron and track oval), the duo are explosive, highly entertaining hard workers.

They’re also exceptionally smart, very outgoing and primed to do big things in the outside world when they step away from Whidbey Island.

Sebastian, who I’ve known since he was a little guy hanging out at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso, does it all.

The lead in (nearly) every school play, a Science Olympiad whiz kid who could teach the judges a few things and a video game player who ruthlessly defends his sprawling on-line empire against any who would dare to come for his crown, he puts the talent in multi-talented.

I know Jacob primarily from watching him work in the world of athletics, where he comes across as a super-friendly, dedicated guy, the kind of player who still takes the football field when his arm is encased in a cast so he won’t leave his teammates hanging.

Track is where he’s making his biggest splash, with back-to-back PRs in the 100 to kick off the new season.

Both Smith and Davis also show a noticeable flair for school spirit, playing The Joker and Captain Kirk, respectively, on their classes floats during the most recent Homecoming parade.

Jacob turned his hair green for the part, while Sebastian had every one of William Shatner’s tics down cold, and both played to the audience as the parade wound its way around the track at halftime.

As the dynamic duo celebrate their big days (no word on whether they’re sharing cake), we just want to take a moment to wish both of them well.

They are two of the brightest shining lights in this small town, as athletes, scholars and people, and they deserve a big round of applause from us all.

Megan Thorn

On to the next season.

With Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball having wrapped its season Monday, the countdown begins for spring sports to reach CMS.

That means track season, and the Wolves will be competing against new opponents this year.

Any connection with the Cascade Conference (and traditional rival Langley) is long gone, which means Coupeville, which can’t host a meet on its about-to-be-ripped-up-track, will travel off-Island for all its meets.

The first day of practice is Monday, April 11.

After that, the Wolves have a five-meet schedule:

Wed-Apr. 27 @ Stevens
Wed-May 4 @ Blue Heron (Port Townsend)
Tue-May 10 @ Sequim
Tue-May 17 @ Stevens
Wed-May 25 @ League Meet (Blue Heron MS)

P.S. — That schedule has flipped and flopped so many times in the last couple of weeks, it’s left me dizzy.

Best bet?

Keep popping over to the school’s website (maybe on an hourly basis) to keep track of any more movement:
