CHS net crew grounds Falcons

A trip to the big city was the answer.

Playing in Auburn Monday, both of the Coupeville High School volleyball teams swept to victories, the first time the Wolves pulled off the successful double dip since opening night.

It also brought an end to a never-ending road trip which had seen the CHS varsity play five of its last six matches away from Cow Town.

Coupeville’s spikers now have three of their next four at home, hosting Orcas Island (Oct. 2), Friday Harbor (Oct. 7), and La Conner (Oct. 16), with a trip to Mount Vernon Christian wedged in there Oct. 14.

How Monday played out:

Varsity:

Coupeville controlled play from start to finish, beating host Auburn Adventist Academy 25-14, 25-10, 25-7 to get to 3-4-1 on the season.

The quality non-conference win earned a nod of approval from Wolf coach Scout Smith.

“Varsity did a great job being adaptable and improving with every set,” she said. “We have been stressing lately the importance of limiting unforced errors, and last night we improved on that in every set.”

Smith shuffled her lineup a bit, with Dakota Strong anchoring the middle, Capri Anter being called upon to play multiple positions, and swing player Adeline Maynes used as a service specialist.

“I love that we have these opportunities to face new challenges that force us to become a better and more flexible team,” Smith said.

“Shout out to Adie for being a continually versatile and selfless player.

“Adie is only ever concerned with how well the team is playing and never her individual accolades,” Smith added. “She will step into any role that benefits the team.”

JV:

Powered by a season-best performance from freshman setter Emma Leavitt, the young Wolves romped to a 25-12, 25-12, 15-5 victory.

The well-balanced win lifts Coupeville’s second squad to 4-2 on the season.

“Our JV team is really start to hit its stride,” Smith said. “The team is beginning to gel and play really well together.”

The Wolves got contributions across the board, with another freshman, Kennedy O’Neill, drawing particular praise.

“Shoutout to Kennedy for stepping up as a leader,” Smith said. “She has done a great job stepping up these last few games and is showing her quality not only in her skills but also in her leadership qualities.

“We are very excited to see how she will continue to grow as the season progresses and in years to come.”

Loggers spike Wolves

The road to back-to-back league titles is a rocky one.

When you’re the big dogs, everyone comes hard for you, something a rebuilding Coupeville High School volleyball squad is experiencing on a nightly basis.

The latest lesson came Thursday in the wilds of Darrington, as the Wolves, missing key starter Haylee Armstrong, fell in straight sets.

The 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 loss drops CHS to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4-1 overall.

With Armstrong sidelined by a bad foot, Tenley Stuurmans moved to outside hitter, with swing player Adeline Maynes nabbing the start at setter, where she collected a varsity career high 12 assists.

Coupeville returns to action Monday, Sept. 29, when it travels to the mainland to face non-conference foe Auburn Adventist Academy.

After that, the Wolves play six straight league contests, starting with back-to-back home matches against Orcas Island and Friday Harbor.

JV nipped:

The Wolves ultimately won more points (67-65), but the Loggers won more sets to claim a 25-22, 25-20, 15-25 victory.

The loss drops Coupeville’s second squad to 2-1 in league play, 3-2 overall, but also featured the JV debut for Mary Western and Darcee Dickson.

“These debuts were earned through daily hard work and dedication,” said CHS varsity coach Scout Smith. “They consistently show up day in and day out.”

“I was completely impressed”

Let the spikes fly and the aces zing.

Coupeville Middle School volleyball kicked off a new season Thursday, hosting next-door neighbor South Whidbey for three matches.

And while the visiting Falcons claimed the victories, the young Wolves impressed their coach with their early-season growth and hustle.

“The girls played great! It was fun seeing everyone trying their best,” CMS coach Shaloma Allen said.

“I was completely impressed with how my girls played today. They showed me how competitive they can be and I love it!”

South Whidbey’s varsity claimed a 25-10, 25-19, 15-4 win, while the Falcon JV came out on top 25-22, 25-10, 15-5.

The C-Team rumble went to the visitors by a 25-9, 25-17, 15-5 score.

Allen, who was making her debut on the Wolf bench, will lead CMS through three straight road trips next.

Coupeville travels to Lakewood, Sultan, and King’s for its next matches, not playing at home again until Oct. 9 against Granite Falls.

The season is a learning process, and the Wolf spikers will likely look far different the next time they’re in action on their home floor.

“Varsity is learning some cool rotations and I loved how they helped each other and worked as a team,” Allen said.

“All three teams had amazing energy the whole time,” she aded. “We all had a great experience and now we have a good baseline to work from.”

Wolf spikers split with always-tough Braves

Volleyball can be a cruel sport.

Case in point, Tuesday’s road trip to La Conner, where the Coupeville High School varsity spikers won more points than their hosts, yet ultimately lost the match.

The Braves slipped away with a 19-25, 29-27, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13 victory, while the Wolves led on the cumulative scorecard by a 111-108 tally.

With the loss, Coupeville, the defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs, slips to 1-2 in conference action, 2-3-1 overall.

That leaves Scout Smith’s squad with some ground to make up, as it trails Mount Vernon Christian (3-0), La Conner (2-0), Darrington (1-0), and Orcas Island (1-1) in the early going.

Friday Harbor (0-2) and Concrete (0-3) round out the standings, with Coupeville slated to travel to Darrington Thursday for the fourth of its 10 league tilts.

The victory lifts the young Wolves, who racked up 17 service aces, to a pristine 2-0 in conference action, 3-1 overall.

Wolf grads shine in college arena

Nezi Keiper is still cracking’ heads and takin’ names.

The former Coupeville High School supernova, a star on the soccer pitch, football gridiron, and basketball hardwood, is busy playing her sophomore season for the Edmonds College women’s soccer team.

With Keiper anchoring the defense, the Tritons are off to a 3-3-1 start, with their next game coming up this Wednesday at Everett.

Overall, Edmonds has nine more games on the schedule, with the regular season finale set for Oct. 29.

Keiper was a First-Team All-Region honoree a year ago as a freshman, continuing a run of award-worthy performances.

And she’s not the only former Wolf shining at the next level. Some other updates:

Madison McMillan:

Fresh off celebrating her birthday, she recently made her debut with the Edmonds College softball team.

The freshman phenom and her new teammates faced off with NCAA D-II power Western Washington University in a 10-inning “situational scrimmage” in which the teams created different in-game scenarios.

McMillan, always hailed as a “Swiss Knife”-style player capable of holding down multiple positions, pulled time in left field, right field, and at third base.

She got two at-bats in the simulated game, and had several strong defensive plays including throwing out a runner who tried to tag up and score from third on a fly out.

Lyla Stuurmans:

A freshman at Skagit Valley College, she’s part of a Cardinal spiker squad which sits at 11-7 on the season.

Stuurmans, a former Northwest 2B/1B League volleyball MVP, has racked up 87 kills, 41 digs, 28 block assists, 16 service aces, and three solo blocks, accounting for 120 points.

Mia Farris:

The two-time CHS Female Athlete of the Year winner is a frosh at Whatcom College, where she leads the volleyball team with 94 digs.

Farris has also accumulated 38 kills, nine aces, seven block assists, six regular assists, one solo block, and 51.5 points.

Marcelo Gebhard and Ben Smith:

Two former Wolves are currently on college football rosters, with Gebhard a freshman at Lewis-Clark Valley in Idaho and Smith a senior at Lakeland University in Wisconsin.
