They’re not throwing away their shot.

It’s a wild new world for Coupeville High School boys soccer, which heads into a new season missing the two biggest goal-scorers in program history and facing a different schedule than in previous seasons.

After playing six conference games in each of their first two seasons in the 1A Olympic League, the Wolves will up that to nine this time around.

That brings soccer even with other sports such as basketball and volleyball and guarantees, if nothing else, everyone’s league record will look different by season’s end.

In the first two seasons, boys soccer was the only sport to have all four league teams post the exact same mark both times around.

Two-time champ Klahowya has gone 6-0 in each previous season, while Port Townsend (4-2), Coupeville (2-4) and Chimacum (0-6) have also all been locked in.

While the Wolves want to topple the Eagles, who have gone to state the last two seasons, finishing 4th in 2015, they also want to get over the edge against the RedHawks.

Twice CHS has come within a goal of knocking off Port Townsend.

Generating goals will be a big key to any Wolf success, as Coupeville took a big hit with the graduation of premium net-finders Abraham Leyva and Zane Bundy.

In all, CHS lost 10 seniors from a team which finished 5-9-1, losing 2-1 to Bellevue Christian in the playoffs, but Leyva’s exit leaves the biggest question mark.

He rattled home 20 goals in his senior campaign, finishing off his three-year stint with the Wolves with a program-record 45 scores.

There is hope, though, as three of the eight players to score last season are back on the pitch.

Ethan Spark, who was second in goals with eight a year ago, returns, as well as First-Team All-League pick William Nelson (5 goals, school-record 14 assists) and Zack Nall (3 goals).

Joining them is freshman Aram Leyva, Abraham’s younger brother and a potent scoring weapon at every level he’s played.

Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson has five returning letter winners, with defenders Uriel Liquidano and Laurence Boado joining Nall, Nelson and Spark.

Several JV players from last year are expected to make the jump this season, including midfielders Nick Dion and Brandon Jansen, defenders Uriah Kastner and Teo Keilwitz and goalies Brian Roberts and Mathew Shreffner.

Freshman James Wood is also in play for a varsity spot.

“We will be a young team this year, with quite a few varsity players having this be their first year on the varsity squad,” Kyle Nelson said. “But we are returning some key players who will be playing in central positions up the field, forming a solid core.

“My goal is to form a well-organized, disciplined, defensive squad,” he added. “And with anyone who watches us play this year seeing significant improvement through the course of the season.”

Grey Rische

Grey Rische matched his doubles partner with three honors of his own, including a Coaches Award.

They shared the court all season, so it’s only fitting they shared their team’s biggest award.

Junior netters William Nelson and Joey Lippo both took home MVP honors Thursday night as the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis team capped its season.

The duo, who finished third at districts after winning the 1A Olympic League tourney title, led off a string of winners.

Jimmy Myers took home Most Inspirational, Mason Grove and Jakobi Baumann shared Most Improved and Joseph Wedekind, John McClarin and Grey Rische received the Coaches Award.

Seniors Wedekind, McClarin, Myers and Rische were honored as captains while also receiving 4-Year Awards along with Aiden Crimmins.

The entire 16-man Wolf team all nabbed varsity letters from coach Ken Stange.

Letter winners:

Joey Lippo

William Nelson

William Nelson gets elegant.

Now they wait six months and hope for a miracle.

Coupeville High School netters William Nelson and Joey Lippo went back to Tacoma Tuesday for one more round of postseason action, but failed to get the win they needed to guarantee their season would continue.

The Wolf juniors got stronger as the match progressed, but couldn’t overcome their private school foes, falling 6-1, 7-5 to Micha Wibowo and Jack Jorgenson of Charles Wright Academy.

With the win, the CWA duo claimed second place at the 1A West Central District tennis tourney, giving the Tarriers a sweep of the top two doubles slots.

Wibowo and Jorgenson will join district champs Dylan Sam and Raghav Agrawal at the state tourney in Yakima next spring.

For the Coupeville pair, who finished third in a field of eight teams at districts, their season is 99.98% done.

Why not 100%?

Because Washington state high school sports are a mess.

Some schools play boys tennis in the fall (like CHS), while a ton wait until the spring.

With that in mind, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association doesn’t announce state tourney allocations for each district until May, regardless of when that district plays.

Coupeville’s current home, District 3, is guaranteed two state slots, and there’s a (very) slim chance of landing a third.

Which means you can hold onto hope even if longtime Wolf coach Ken Stange admitted earlier in the week it would be “very unlikely.”

Of course, six months is a long time, and if something were to happen to either Charles Wright duo (skiing accidents? alien abduction? bribes?), Coupeville is first up as an alternate, as well.

If nothing else, Nelson and Lippo, who should be playing soccer and baseball, respectively, when spring arrives, led a strong Wolf showing in the postseason.

After winning its second straight 1A Olympic League title, Coupeville advanced eight netters to districts, most of any team there, and most in Stange’s decade-plus run as the school’s net guru.

Singles players Nick Etzell and Jakobi Baumann and doubles duos Joseph Wedekind/John McClarin and Grey Rische/Jimmy Myers joined Lippo and Nelson at districts.

Of that group, Etzell, Baumann, Lippo and Nelson are underclassmen and can return next season.

They enjoyed Tacoma so much they’re going back.

Coupeville High School juniors William Nelson and Joey Lippo won two of three matches Thursday at the 1A West Central District tennis tourney, keeping their state dreams alive.

The Wolf duo and coach Ken Stange will return to the Sprinker Tennis Center Tuesday, Nov. 1 for one more match.

Lippo and Nelson will face Micha Wibowo and Jack Jorgenson of Charles Wright Academy to decide 2nd and 3rd place, with the winner punching their tickets to state.

The loser Tuesday might (and it’s a very big might) also advance, as high school tennis in Washington state is a complicated mess.

With some schools playing in the fall and others in the spring, state is not held until May 26-27 in Yakima.

Along with the delay, the WIAA also doesn’t release allocations for each district until the spring.

That means District 3, where Coupeville plays, won’t know if it gets two or three slots to state for months.

For now, the district champs (Dylan Sam and Raghav Agrawal of CWA) are definitely in, as are the winners Tuesday.

To get to that match, Lippo and Nelson had to knock off their own teammates, beating CHS seniors Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin for the first time this season.

The older duo had been Coupeville’s #1 doubles team for two seasons.

The Wolves were strongly represented at districts, with eight players. Charles Wright had six, Klahowya four and Cascade Christian and Vashon Island three apiece.

It was the final tourney for Coupeville seniors Wedekind, McClarin, Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische.

Mason Grove

Grey Rische

Grey Rische and doubles partner Jimmy Myers collected one of Coupeville’s two victories on the day.

Almost a mirror image. Almost.

Completing a rare home-and-away series with a non-conference rival, the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad fell 5-2 in Sequim Tuesday afternoon.

While several players on both sides were shuffled from the first meeting on Whidbey way back on Sept. 12, the same two Wolf duos won and the final team score was identical.

Sequim, a 2A school, swept to victory by blitzing through the singles matches, while 1A Coupeville split the doubles matches.

Again.

The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for the Wolves and drops them to 5-7.

Coupeville (4-0 in 1A Olympic League play) closes the regular season with matches at Chimacum (0-12) Thursday and South Whidbey (7-4) Oct. 17.

After that the Wolves, who won their second straight league crown, head to the postseason, starting with the league tourney Oct. 20.
