Wolf grad roars to big election win

Luke and Beverly Currier

It was a slam dunk.

Luke Currier, who graduated from Coupeville High School in the early ’90s, then married fellow Wolf Beverly Robinett, has been swept into political office by the voters of Anacortes.

The former CHS athlete, now the CEO of Skagit Valley’s Land Title and Escrow Company, received 66% of the vote in the race to obtain an open seat on the Anacortes City Council.

“Thank you, Anacortes! I am truly humbled by your support and honored to be elected to serve,” Currier said in a statement.

“This community means everything to Bev and I.

“I am grateful for every conversation, every encouraging message, and every person who believed in this campaign.”

While Currier will be new to the City Council, he has plenty of prior experience helping guide growth in the area, as he sits on the Anacortes Planning Commission and the Executive Board of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce.

After finishing his high school days in Coupeville, Currier earned a B.A. in Political Science from Western Washington University and an Executive MBA from Seattle University.

Booters launch banquet season

Every letterman can return next season.

With no seniors on this year’s roster, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad went 15 players deep, and first-year coach Jim Kunz awarded every man on his roster a varsity letter.

Which makes sense, since most of the Wolves saw considerable field time during a season in which CHS picked up four of its five wins on its home pitch.

The booters were the first of Coupeville’s six fall sports teams to hand out postseason honors, kicking things off with a pizza party Tuesday night.

Prairie progeny earn football honors

Former Coupeville High School cheerleader Sarah (Engle) Viers now roots for son Lyal.

The prairie is strong in them.

Cedar Park Christian senior football captains Lyal Viers and Andy Penrod, part of the seventh generation of their family to have a connection to Coupeville, were honored recently for their play on the gridiron.

Viers was named as both the Offensive and Defensive MVP for the Emerald Sound Conference — a league which includes traditional powerhouse King’s — while Penrod was tabbed as a First-Team All-Conference wide receiver.

Cedar Park, which beat both Coupeville and South Whidbey in non-conference games this season, finished 4-6.

Viers and Penrod are the sons of sisters (and CHS grads) Sarah and Stephanie Engle, respectively, and Andy’s dad is Videoville alumni Isaiah Penrod.

Grandparents include the “Dave’s” — former Coupeville Town Marshal Dave Penrod and the late, great Pastor Dave Engle, AKA the nicest human being I’ve ever met.

Andy Penrod snagged 23 passes for 475 yards and nine touchdowns, while Lyal Viers filled up the stat sheet on both sides of the ball.

He racked up 1,385 all-purpose yards, rushing 95 times for 598 yards and seven scores, while adding 32 receptions for 600 yards and four more trips to the end zone.

On defense, Viers had 37 solo tackles, 54 assists, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery to pace CPC.

Hoops schedules dazzle and delight

The sound of squeaking shoes on gym floors is almost upon us.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School basketball teams is next Monday, Nov. 17, with the first Wolf games set for Dec. 2.

CHS varsity head coaches Megan Richter and Brad Sherman, and their assistants will guide their squads through seasons which run through possibly March.

Currently the Wolf boys have 19 games on the schedule, with their female counterparts down for 18, with the boys (two tilts) and girls (three rumbles) both set to play in a holiday tournament.

Included in that are 10 games against Coupeville’s fellow Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, as the Wolves play 2B foes La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Friday Harbor twice, while squaring off with 1B schools Darrington and Concrete once.

Write everything down in pencil, as the Wolf girls are expected to add at least one more game, and winter weather can always play havoc with everything.

But here at least is a tease of what could be:

Banner night for Booster Club

They hit the bonanza.

With a big boost from the community, the Coupeville High School Booster Club set a record at this year’s fundraiser dinner, bringing in $42,000 to support Wolf athletics.

Fine dining for a fine cause.

CHS student athletes spoke to the crowd at the benefit Saturday, detailing what the club has provided them, with Wolf boys’ hardwood guru Brad Sherman adding a coach’s perspective.

All in all, the event was a huge hit, said Booster Club bigwig (and Coupeville alumni) Danette Beckley.

“The energy was high, and folks were so generous,” she said.

Wolf athletes handled kitchen duties.

Along with a catered dinner, the night included live and silent auctions, with vacations in places as diverse as Maui and Lake Chelan being offered, in addition to the always popular “Pork Palooza for Eight” and a “Wheelbarrow of Booze.”

Plus, a ton of delectable desserts were up for grabs.

Just a small portion of the tasty treats.
