Up the charts they go

It’s a living, breathing thing.

Sort of.

Over the last couple of years, one of my obsessions has been trying to track down and document a definitive career scoring chart for both Coupeville High School basketball programs.

With the Wolf boys having started play way back in 1917, and the CHS girls joining them in 1974, there’s a lot of moving parts.

I’ve managed to pull together a list which I feel is fairly solid, while also (sort of, kind of) accepting there are some road blocks which may never be fully overcome.

We may never have scoring stats for that first Wolf girls team in 1974-1975, and old school stars Mike Criscuola, Jack Elzinga, and Tom Sahli may not get full credit for their complete stats.

Barring the creation of a time machine, or someone finding missing score books buried in an attic or barn, that’s just reality.

Frustrating as it is.

But, the positive side of this is I have documented the (mostly complete) scoring stats for 392 Wolf boys and 229 girls.

If I was normal, I’d wait until the end of the season, then take the 2019-2020 totals and add them in, updating the list at that point.

Instead, I tweak things after every game, so I can watch history unfold in real time, current players moving upwards, passing the stars of previous eras.

As we depart 2019, here’s all active Wolf players with varsity points to their credit.

That includes sophomores Ja’Kenya Hoskins and Xavier Murdy. Both are injured and yet to see action this season, but have multiple seasons ahead of them.

Bide your time, watch the standings

There were basketball games this week, just none involving Coupeville.

The Wolves are on Day 8 of a 12-day break between contests, not returning to action until Friday, January 3, when they travel to Chimacum.

But other North Sound Conference teams did lace up the shoes and head to the hardwood, so we’re back to provide a look at where everyone’s win/loss record sits.

Have to fill the time somehow, so here’s where things sit:

I’ll be there for you (with standings)

And now, some rest.

Having reached the sort-of halfway point of the season, give or take a game or three here and there, the North Sound Conference basketball teams are headed out for winter break.

Coupeville has 12 days off, with neither its girls or boys teams returning to action until Jan. 3.

Not all teams are taking the break off, but those who aren’t will be playing exclusively non-conference foes.

The King’s boys will play in a tourney in Arizona, both Granite Falls squads are set for Crush in the Slush in Port Townsend, and there are a handful of other games spread out around Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities.

Then, January rolls around and things get serious, as everyone starts to hunt league titles and playoff positioning.

For now, there have been just two league games played on either side of the ball, with the Coupeville girls one of those tied atop the current conference standings.

As we head into the break, where things sit:

I always feel like (somebody’s watching me)

The cameras are live.

Coupeville High School, with financial help from the school’s Booster Club and the Coupeville Lion’s Club, has installed a new streaming camera system in both the gym and at Mickey Clark Field.

From this moment on, all athletic events at those locations, which includes basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, and track, will be available to be viewed by Wolf fans near and far.

If you have a subscription to the NFHS Network.

Fans can choose between a monthly ($10.99 as you go, may cancel at any time) or yearly plan ($69.99, which reduces the cost to $5.83 per month).

A portion of each subscription comes back to the CHS athletic fund, while fans who can’t attend games in person will now have another option.

Broadcasts for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year will be picture and no audio, but the school has hopes to start a class which will teach students play-by-play.

That would allow Coupeville to be a full service streamer in the manner of Sultan High School, which has been broadcasting for several years.

As things expand, CHS will also look into the possibility of streaming non-sports events such as graduation.
