Beauman

Davis

Davis, putting in work on the pitch last spring.

Pluck.

That’s the word which I think best describes Coupeville High School senior Beauman Davis, who celebrates a birthday today.

Regardless of the sport (tennis, basketball, soccer) or activity (he’s also been extremely active in band), Davis never stops striving.

He’s a hard worker, shows up every day and puts his time in, and has remained upbeat and a good teammate every step of the way.

So far, my enduring memory of him is watching Beauman sacrifice for both his team and his rivals.

With Port Townsend in town last year, the RedHawks needed another man to pull together even a limited JV team, and one Wolf was going to need to flip jerseys to make it happen.

Up stepped Davis, who pulled on PT red and, despite the catcalls of his teammates in the stands, played all-out in support of his team-for-a-day.

It was a class act by a humble young man and allowed players on both sides of the ball to see action that day.

As Davis heads towards graduation, we should take a moment to appreciate what this unsung student/athlete has accomplished in his time at CHS.

Every program, sports or academic or activity-based, needs a Beauman or two to keep things clicking.

He is just a solid dude across the board, and I hope he realizes that Wolf fans, as well as his coaches and teammates, appreciate what he has given to his school.

Happy cake day, Mr. Davis! Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey.

Daniel Barajas (Pat Kelley photos)

Next weekend's playoff draw.

Next weekend’s playoff draw.

It wasn’t a perfect way to end the regular season, but it had its moments.

Playing in a game with little impact on league standings or playoff positioning Saturday, the Coupeville 7th grade boys’ SWISH basketball squad coasted into the postseason with a 34-24 loss to Friday Harbor.

Turnovers and missed shots, the deadliest of basketball combos, tripped up the Wolves as they finished the regular season 6-2.

Coupeville will be a #2 seed in the playoffs, which go down in Mount Vernon next Saturday, Mar. 5.

After that comes a trip to Spokane for a middle school state tourney.

While they stumbled a bit in their regular season finale, the Wolves got another strong game from post power Jake Mitten, who banged away for 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Matthew Kelley knocked down six, while Daniel Olson and Daniel Barajas each added a bucket to round out the scoring.

It was the first basket of the season for Barajas, who has led the sixth graders on the squad with 11 assists and 12 rebounds this season.

Kelley filled out the stat sheet with four rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks, while Barajas, Olson, Dakota Eck, Alex Jimenez, Caleb Meyer, Logan Martin and Hawthorne Wolfe snagged a rebound apiece.

Connor Barton pilfered a steal.

Caleb Meyer (Pat Kelley photo)

Running away from the pack.

That’s what the Coupeville 7th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad is currently doing, throwing down wins left and right.

The latest came Saturday as the Wolves blitzed Granite Falls 49-39.

The win lifts Coupeville to 6-1 on the season and clinches at least second place in a 15-team league.

Using a platoon system, the Wolves opened the game with its 6th graders on the floor and they ran out to an early 8-4 lead.

Then Coupeville tossed in its 7th graders and the game was soon out of reach.

Jake Mitten paced the Wolves with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Daniel Olson knocked down 13 and Caleb Meyer tickled the twines for eight.

Logan Martin (6), Matthew Kelley (6) and Connor Barton (2) rounded out the scorers.

Kelley (5), Martin (4), Hawthorne Wolfe (4), Daniel Barajas (2) and Dakota Eck (1) helped Mitten out on the boards, while Meyer added three assists and three steals.

The Wolves have one game remaining on their regular season schedule, but have also accepted an invitation to the Washington State Middle School Championships in Spokane Mar. 11-13.

Wiley (John Fisken photos)

HUnter Smith

Hunter Smith, who was fourth on the team in scoring despite missing time with an injury, is one of two Wolves who could return next season.

It came down to the final game.

With a balanced offense all year, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad had three players with a chance to finish atop the scoring charts.

In the end, senior Wiley Hesselgrave dropped in nine points in the season finale last Thursday to break a tie and edge Jordan Ford.

That gave him back-to-back team scoring titles.

As a team, Coupeville improved its scoring, jumping to 1,092 points this season after racking up 1,057 a year ago.

While the team leading total was down (Hesselgrave knocked down 273 as a junior and 217 as a senior), part of that was because other players stepped up.

Three Wolves topped the 200 point barrier in 2015-2016, while only Hesselgrave did the season before.

Five of the seven returning players topped their individual scoring marks from a year ago.

A lot of this year’s scoring will now vanish with graduation, though.

Nine of the 11 players who were full-time varsity players in 2015-2016 were seniors, with only sophomore Hunter Smith (4th in scoring) and junior Gabe Wynn (5th) slated to return.

Four other players saw action in one game, but none of them scored.

Seniors Andre Avila and Beauman Davis played on Senior Night, while freshman Ty Eck and junior Brian Shank debuted in the fourth quarter of their team’s playoff loss.

The final (unofficial, but pretty sure we’re right) scoring stats for the Wolf boys’ varsity hoops squad:

Wiley Hesselgrave — 217
Jordan Ford — 210
Risen Johnson — 204
Hunter Smith — 130
Gabe Wynn — 84
JJ Johnson — 76
DeAndre Mitchell — 54
Ryan Griggs — 50
Dante Mitchell — 34
Jared Helmstadter — 22
Desmond Bell — 11
