Register today for youth cheer camp

UPDATE — CAMP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

You can kick off a new month with a big cheer.

The Coupeville High School cheerleaders are holding a youth cheer camp Saturday, February 1 for children in grades K-8.

The event runs from 12-3 PM in the CHS gym and costs $30, which includes a t-shirt, snack, and water for all participants.

Parents need to register their child online by Jan. 29 to ensure a t-shirt.

At the conclusion of the camp, participants will hold a parent showcase to show off what they’ve learned during the day, which will include a cheer, dance, and stunts.

All children should show up wearing “workout” attire.

Coupeville’s ongoing battle with snow has kept its high school gym fairly quiet this week.

That will change next week, barring any surprises from Mother Nature, when live basketball returns.

The Wolf boys welcome Cedar Park Christian to town Monday, January 20, then return to their home floor Saturday, Jan. 25 to face Port Townsend.

Both affairs are reschedules of games denied by weather, the former thanks to snow, the latter to wind.

While you wait to once again camp out on the rock-hard CHS bleachers, a look at those who might be joining you.

Three cheers for pancake power

Pancakes are calling your name.

Your stomach can help the Coupeville High School cheer team.

The Wolf cheerleaders are hosting a pancake fundraiser at Applebee’s in Oak Harbor this Saturday, January 18, with proceeds going to help fund a trip to nationals in Orlando.

Cost is $10, and the event runs from 9-11 AM.

Put some pancakes in your tummy and you’d be helping Ashleigh Battaglia, Ella Bueler, Karyme Castro, Coral Caveness, Emily Fiedler, Ja’Tarya Hoskins, Dawson Houston, Marenna Rebischke-Smith, Mica Shipley, Gavin St Onge, Bella Velasco, and Melia Welling.

Wolves ready for ESPN closeup

Get your cameras ready.

With just a month until the National High School Cheerleading Championship takes over the stage at Disney World in Orlando, Coupeville’s squad is hard at work.

In between working on routines, the Wolves are in fundraising mode for the trip, while also finding time to drop hype videos such as the one seen below.

CHS, which returned to the competitive cheer game last year, ending a six-year dry spell, claimed 3rd place at the 2018 state meet.

Now, the Wolves and second-year coach BreAnna Boon have qualified for nationals, an event Coupeville last competed in back in 2006.

The squad — Ashleigh Battaglia, Ella Bueler, Karyme Castro, Coral Caveness, Emily Fiedler, Ja’Tarya Hoskins, Dawson Houston, Marenna Rebischke-Smith, Mica Shipley, Gavin St Onge, Bella Velasco, and Melia Welling — needs to raise $8,000 to cover expenses for the trip.

The event itself runs February 7-9 and is piped into 100 million homes across 32 countries on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

CHS cheer has a 501(c)(3) number, so any and all donations can be used as a tax write-off, with receipt provided.

Help fuel Wolf cheer dreams

Your dollar bills, plus their sterling work ethic, can equal cheer nirvana.

Having found out late in the game that they qualified for nationals, the Coupeville High School cheer squad is in scramble mode right now.

The Wolves, in just their second year back on the competition cheer mats, are hitting big heights under second-year coach BreAnna Boon.

CHS, which fielded only a sideline cheer squad between 2012-2017, claimed 3rd place at the 1A state meet in 2018, giving the program its fourth top-four finish at the big dance.

Wolf cheer won a state title in 2006, then finished 2nd in 2007, and 4th in 2011, all under legendary coach Sylvia Arnold.

Now, Coupeville has an invite to Florida, having qualified for the National High School Cheerleading Championship.

That event runs Feb. 7-9, 2020 at the Walt Disney World Resort’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, and is televised on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

The Wolves could be seen in 32 countries and 100 million homes.

But, they need some help getting from Cow Town to Trophy Town.

Or, more specifically, they need to raise $8,000 to cover expenses for the trip, and are looking for sponsorship help from Wolf fans.

Individuals or businesses, cheer addicts or people who have no clue what a back spot, bow and arrow, or straight cradle might be – doesn’t matter.

If you’re loyal to the red and black, and want to see 12 extremely hard-working Wolf athletes and their coaches rewarded for their efforts, now is the time.
