Coupeville’s lil’ miracle guy, Baby Owen, has grown from 1.5 to 4.5 pounds since birth. (Photo courtesy Leslie Improta)

One of Coupeville’s littlest heroes continues to fight, and we can help his progress.

Former CMS counselor Leslie Improta has been leading the charge to help out the Camatti family, whose son Owen was just 1.5 pounds at birth.

The lil’ guy is at the University of Washington’s Medical Hospital, and has packed on three more pounds thanks to great care.

Owen’s mother Carrie, who is staying with her son, has MS, and she and Owen’s father Charles can use all the support they can get during this time.

If you can help, checks made out to Charles Camatti can be mailed to Leslie Improta at 683 Power Road, Coupeville, WA 98239.

There is also a GoFundMe set up:

Bennett Boyles (center)

Marty and June Mazdra

Two key members of the Coupeville High School basketball community will be honored Friday, as the Wolf hoops squads host Coaches vs. Cancer games.

CHS is set to play Sultan, with games at 5:00 and 6:45.

The Wolves will pay tribute to Bennett Boyles and June Mazdra, while the Turks will also have an honoree.

Donations will be accepted at the game, as well as online, with proceeds from the night going to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Boyles is a member of the CHS Class of 2022 who lost a courageous battle at age 12 with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a form of brain cancer.

He played basketball alongside many of the current Wolf players on SWISH teams, and a seat will be left open on the Coupeville boys bench for him.

Mazdra, when she’s not doing her day job as a custodian at Coupeville Middle School, is the woman with the magic pencil.

She keeps the most beautifully written, precise basketball scorebooks in the biz, and has done so for decades, beginning when she was still a student at CHS.

Diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Mazdra continues to stand tall in her fight, surrounded by family, friends, and fans.

If you can’t make it to Friday’s games in person, donations can be made online.

Battling for a loose ball, or the last cookie at a bake sale? (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Have a spare buck? You’re in luck.

When you pop by the Coupeville High School gym this coming Saturday, Dec. 21, for that afternoon’s basketball doubleheader against Nooksack Valley, there’ll be something extra in the concession stand.

Actually, a whole lot of extra.

Along with the normal hot dogs, Red Vines, and popcorn, baked goods of all sorts will be on display, ready for your purchasing and chomping.

All goodies will be $1, so you can make it rain, just in a more PG kind of way.

Proceeds from the bake sale go to the CHS Class of 2021, whose parents run the concession stand.

Saturday’s games will be the final ones played in 2019, as the Wolf basketball squads head out on winter break afterwards, not returning to action until the first week of January.

Tip-off is 1:00 for girls varsity and boys JV, with boys varsity and girls JV games set for 2:45ish.

A basket of goodies waits to be bid on at the Coupeville Booster Club Crab Feed. (Lucy Sandahl photos)

Auctioneer Dale Sherman puts his velvet voice to good use.

Janie Keilwitz hits the jackpot.

The raffle crew (l to r, Samantha Streitler, Lily Leedy and Gavin Straub) are ready to rock.

Crab Feed committee members Jeannie Sandahl (left) and Jennifer Kellner celebrate a successful fundraiser.

Unlike the Oscars, we don’t play anyone off stage mid-way through their thank-you’s.

With another Crab Feed in the books, the folks who put on the Coupeville Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser are flush with praise for everyone who helped, so we hand off the mic to them:

Thank you, Coupeville, for a successful Crab Feed!
