Mitch Meffert and his family.

Wolf Nation has taken a hit with the sudden passing of Mitch Meffert.

I knew him in passing, as his daughter Kaela appeared here on Coupeville Sports during her days as a softball slugger, and he was one of her biggest fans.

Kaela was part of a group of bright, talented diamond warriors, uniting with teammates like McKenna Somes, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Anya Leavell and coach Mimi Iverson to torch rivals.

Mom Jennifer Meffert owns and operates JennyBean Custom Coffee, which has been putting out a superior product here on The Rock for a decade-plus.

As Mitch’s family, which also includes son Noah, move forward, they could use a boost from their community.

Friends have launched a fundraiser on GiveSendGo, with the proceeds doing to help “alleviate the financial burden that comes with loss, allowing the Meffert family to focus on healing and honoring Mitch’s memory.”

Mitch touched the lives of countless individuals with his love for the Lord, compassionate heart, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends,” said Derik Vrable.

“His warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and his absence leaves a profound emptiness in our hearts.

“With your generous donations, we will assist the Meffert family with medical bills, memorial expenses, and other unforeseen costs that may arise during this difficult period.

“Your love and support mean the world to the Meffert family as they navigate this journey of grief and remembrance.”

Have an eggs-cellent Easter by letting someone else do the work while you take the credit.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad is running a fundraiser in which the Wolves set up your holiday hunt while you relax.

In return, your bucks help the CHS spirit crew fund their own activities.

You can’t always get what you want, except maybe this time you can.

The Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools is running a raffle in which someone will walk away with $2,000+ in Rolling Stones tickets.

The foundation, which provides help to students and teachers, has been gifted two ducats to Mick Jagger and gents playing May 15 at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The tickets are located in Section 137, Row C, seats 1 and 2, and they could be yours.

Raffle tickets are being sold for $25 apiece, with the drawing set for Mar. 23.

There are no limits on how many raffle tickets you can buy, but there are only 200 available.

All raffle transactions must be done person to person, so no online sales.

You can buy tickets at either Aqua Gifts or Branch Business Services in Coupeville, or from a member of the foundation.

Those members are James Steller, Chic Merwine, Bill Evans, Diane Eelkema, Molly McPherson, Karen Koschak, Christie Sears, Kathy Harada, Aaron Lucero, Danette Beckley, Jerry Kroon, and Fran McCarthy.

Garth Batchelor (far left) was deeply committed to helping both his own children and their friends play sports. (Photos courtesy Jenny Dill)

There are Wolves, Falcons, and Wildcats, but ultimately, it’s one Whidbey for those involved in sports.

The unexpected death of Garth Batchelor Tuesday leaves a huge hole for the South Whidbey community, and I’m asking Wolf Nation, if possible, to join in helping them.

Batchelor, who along with his wife Olivia, grew up on the south end of the island, was an avid little league coach and athletic supporter.

All three of the couple’s children — Brent, Morgan, and Levi — are strong multi-sport athletes who provided great competition for Coupeville.

Even as I gently harassed Olivia during her own coaching days, imploring her to transfer her children to the middle part of Whidbey, they remained steadfast Falcons — something I respect.

Garth, Olivia, and their children.

This will be a very tough time for the family, beginning with the fact Garth was the primary source of income for the Batchelor’s.

If you have the ability to financially help, please consider doing so. If not, pass on info to others.

Together, we can help keep alive the idea of “One Whidbey,” a band of small-town folk standing together regardless of what school colors we wear.
