Lodell

Mike Lodell wants you to know it’s always sunny inside his brain.

Dion

“Nice try, Lodell. But there are two small lakes inside my shoes and I’m 98.2% sure I’m never going to be warm again.” (Fisken photo)

It’s a birthday 2-for-1 special in Wolf Nation.

Saturday brings the cake day to Coupeville High School junior Nick Dion, a true scholar/athlete, and that irrepressible king of the grounds-keeping crew, Mike “Mr. Sunshine” Lodell.

They may be separated by a few years (we’ll say Lodell is old enough to be Dion’s … older brother), but they both play vital roles in Cow Town.

Dion is a super-smart whiz kid who, when he’s not dominating fools in Science Olympiad, is also a hard-working two-sport athlete.

Whether the game is tennis or soccer, Nick flies around the playing surface, fighting through every play.

Dude has no quit in him, and remains one of the nicest guys who will, without a doubt, slay you in two worlds.

Athletically, he’s a scrapper. Academically, he’s a juggernaut.

Put the two together and you have one of the very best Coupeville has to offer the world.

Now, Lodell, the smooth-talking master of the laid-back McConaughey-style vibe, is just as impressive in his own way.

A movie junkie, father of two (Noah and Hope) and notorious street ball assassin, Mike can brighten even the darkest day on the prairie.

Even if he is so good at his job that one day last spring we spent three hours being drenched while watching softball, because his work on the field made it super-resistant to the liquid daggers slashing the fans to pieces.

No matter how miserable the weather got, the field not only stayed playable, it brought oohs and ahs from the umps.

Any other town, any other field, the game would have been called off in the first inning and we would have all gone home to dry clothes and a cup o’ tea.

Not here, as Lodell’s handiwork kept the CHS field, and the softball schedule, chugging along beautifully (even as we all good-naturedly cursed him repeatedly).

Of course, deep down (right down to our sodden boxer shorts), our respect for Mike’s handiwork grew even more that day.

Even if we did contemplate beating him with a large stick for being too dang good at his job…

Like Dion, Mike brings a deep commitment to everything he does, which is why I know, without a doubt, today’s scheduled softball opener against South Whidbey (12 PM) is going on, regardless of how dank the weather looks through my sliding glass door.

Dang it, Lodell, you magnificent, Mother Nature-bustin’ bastard!!

Well, that’s fine, cause when I’m soaked a few hours from now, and they’re still playing, I’ll give him a surprise birthday hug and hold on long enough until I make sure he’s soaked too.

But anyways … happy joint cake day Nick and Mike.

May your day shine as brightly as the sun I (naively) hope will peek through the clouds when the ump says “Play ball.”

May Rose (John Fisken photos)

May Rose

May Rose is taking over the world.

And the world’s pretty happy about that. As it should be.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, is a winner on and off the field, a young woman whose potential is mind-boggling.

On the soccer pitch, she has taken huge strides every season, rising from a complementary player to a dangerous sniper.

This past fall she blasted home a goal against Chimacum in a 2-1 win that clinched a playoff berth for the Wolves and got the seal of approval from her coach afterwards.

May Rose played lights out; she has really worked hard and improved her game!,” Troy Cowan said. “Her first touch has become a real weapon and she is getting hungry for the ball, which is bad news for defenders!!!”

You notice, he gave her three exclamation points (one more than my typical headline). Nice.

When she’s not rampaging on the pitch, Rose is a soft serve master at Dairy Queen, a proud older sister to fellow booter Taichen Rose and a vital part of The Three Amigos with fellow CHS athletes Bree Daigneault and Ally Roberts.

Oh yeah, and she’s also one of the best in the game on Twitter, where she slices ‘n dices with subtle zingers that leave her foes on the mat, looking like fools.

But don’t let that confuse you.

May might be quick with the wit, but don’t get me wrong. She’s no bully. Far from it.

She has always come across as a friendly, considerate, very intelligent young woman who is supremely loyal to her friends and families, feisty but caring.

Rose is what every coach, every fan loves to see in a student/athlete, and we are very blessed to have her as part of our town.

So, as she celebrates her cake day, we want to send our best to May.

You’re flying high, Miss Rose. Keep soaring. Always.

Jovanah Foote

Jovanah Foote

Jovanah Foote seems to have no fear.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has spent her final year at CHS taking full advantage of every opportunity.

She’s always been front and center in the world of Wolf cheer, and was a captain in two different seasons this year.

But Jovanah has also jumped at the chance to try new things in her final go-round, playing soccer and running track to keep her senior year a busy one.

On the pitch she became a fan favorite, working as hard as anyone on the team and building a cheering section one game at a time.

When Foote came super-close to scoring this season, Dawn Hesselgrave, mom to Wolf booters Mia and Kalia Littlejohn, about fell off the top row of the bleachers, she was so excited.

And while Jovanah didn’t bring the same years of experience to the field that many of her new teammates did, she more than matched them in enthusiasm and the joy she displayed every time she entered a game.

If you could, you’d like to take every person as they enter their last year of high school and point to Foote and say, “Follow her example.”

Take new chances, try new sports and activities, expand your repertoire.

That way, when you’re a few years down the road, you’ll look back and have more memories, and more positive memories, than if you just lock down and focus solely on grades.

But don’t get me wrong there. I’m sure her grades are impeccable.

Jovanah, like her older brother Nathaniel, comes across as highly intelligent, well-spoken and someone who is going to continue to dazzle folks long after high school.

As she celebrates her cake day, we want to wish her the best.

You have been a bright, shining superstar, Miss Foote, and I have no doubt the best is still yet to come for you.

Payton Aparicio (John Fisken photos)

Payton Aparicio, doin’ work. (John Fisken photos)

Sydney’s little sister has become a star in her own right.

Coupeville High School sophomore Payton Aparicio, who celebrates a birthday today, has fully stepped out of the shadow cast by her successful big sis, more than making a name for herself in the sports world.

A two-sport star (volleyball and tennis) who still has time to return to basketball and make it three (you never know), Payton is one of the true bright lights in Wolf Nation.

She tore up the tennis court as just a freshman, teaming with fellow 9th grader Sage Renninger to play #1 doubles, and play it well.

Now, with a season of experience under their belts, they seem on the verge of having a truly huge breakout season this spring.

If Aparicio sets the tennis world on fire, it will be the second time she’s captured the spotlight this school year.

In the fall, she made the jump from playing JV volleyball as a frosh to being a varsity sensation as a sophomore.

When the stats were added up at the end of the season, Aparicio was one of three Wolves to appear in 10 of 11 categories, cracking the top four in a startling seven categories.

She was second on the team in serving percentage and service points won, third in kill percentage, hitting percentage and service returns and fourth in kills and digs.

Fueled by Aparicio and a roster full of fellow young guns, Coupeville surged from one win the season before to six in 2015, including a playoff victory against Seattle Christian.

Watching Payton fly around the court, two things were obvious.

One, she is a talented athlete (who hails from impressive athletic bloodlines), and, as her confidence continues to grow, I fully expect Aparicio to soar even higher.

And two, she truly lights up the gym and the world around it.

Payton comes across as a thoughtful, smart young woman who has a deep love for her large extended family, both blood relatives and teammates.

As she hits her cake day today, just a few days away from the start of a new tennis season, we want to take a quick moment to wish her the best.

Happy birthday, Miss Aparicio. May it sparkle like you do.

JR Pendergrass: "I must destroy you!!" (John Fisken photos)

JR Pendergrass: “I must destroy you!!” (John Fisken photos)

With the parental units on Senior Night.

With the parental units on Senior Night.

JR Pendergrass is an American Bad-Ass.

And I mean that in the best way possible.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, was a rampaging force of nature on the gridiron, one of the real bright spots for the Wolves during a tough season this fall.

Anchoring the line, Pendergrass spent his season fighting off hordes of attacking foes, doing his best to give quarterbacks Hunter Downes and Gabe Eck time to learn under fire.

His name rarely showed up in the stats columns, because the positions he held down aren’t the ones where people get their names in the spotlight.

But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t valuable. Far from it.

JR was the glue that held an often-battered Wolf unit together during a year when most of the roster was very, very young and facing off with much more seasoned opponents.

I give Pendergrass a lot of credit.

For standing tall.

For showing up every game, (imaginary) lunch pail in hand and fighting until the final whistle.

For teaching his younger teammates to embrace their roles and to enjoy their time on the field, through good times and bad.

#64 had a heck of a year and I hope he knows it was appreciated.

As the Wolves build towards a brighter future, it’s guys like Pendergrass who are laying the corner stones for the grand structure we all hope to see rise.

He may not have always gotten his just reward (I’m sure he would have enjoyed a few more wins), but his impact was felt this season, and will continue to trickle down for years.

So happy birthday, JR, and thank you for the way you played.

Your school, your town, your fans, tip their hats to you.

You seem like a good dude off the field, and a kick-ass one between the lines, and it was an honor to have you wear the red and black.
