Shane Losey (John Fisken photos)

Shane Losey (John Fisken photos)

Shane Losey is keeping the family flag flying high.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is the latest in a long line of athletic stars from a clan with a deep bench.

Older brother Mitchell and dad Scott excelled in multiple sports, while grandpa Bill helped open holes for record-setting rusher Paul Messner on the gridiron, when he wasn’t carrying the ball himself.

Toss in Shane’s great uncle, Glenn, who played on the 1969-1970 Wolf boys’ hoops squad which was the first basketball team in Whidbey Island history to win a district title, and it’s an impressive legacy.

And that’s not even counting cousins Julian and Melia Welling, who, like Shane, are busy writing new chapters in their family’s success story.

It’s a lot to live up to, but Shane seems ideally suited to the endeavor.

Low-key, confident but not overbearing, he’s a hard worker both on the gridiron and the baseball diamond.

Whether he’s flicking passes or turning double plays, the youngest Losey is a quality dude, on and off the field.

Combining his dad’s passion for the game with mom Melissa’s love of life, Shane has a bright future — one which we, as Wolf fans will get to see play out in front of us.

I look forward to it.

So happy birthday, Shane.

Now go seize the day and add another level to the Losey legend.

Valen Trujillo: The Woman, the Myth, the Legend. (John Fisken photos)

Valen Trujillo: The Woman, the Myth, the Legend. (John Fisken photos)

What can we say about Valen Trujillo?

A lot, and all of it good.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has been as important as any athlete to the growth and success of Coupeville Sports.

She goes on a very small list, with people like Makana Stone, McKayla and McKenzie Bailey, Caleb Valko and Nick Streubel, for the impact they have had over the four years I’ve yammered away on this blog.

Miss Trujillo was an 8th grader when I first met her, a basketball fiend who made rival players cry and then came up into the stands afterward to thank me for attending her games.

Over the past four years, she has shown herself to be a completely brilliant young woman, in every way.

Athletically, it goes without saying.

Though she parted ways with the hoops world when she reached high school (I cry about that at least twice a week), Valen has blazed an extraordinary trail through the worlds of volleyball and tennis.

When she departs CHS, her memory will live on thanks to the volleyball record board in the gym hallway, as she already holds the school’s career record for digs.

Bolstered by Trujillo and classmates Tiffany Briscoe and Ally Roberts, the Wolf spikers won their first playoff match in years last season, and the outlook this year under new coach Cory Whitmore is so bright Valen might have to wear her tennis sunglasses indoors.

On the hard-court, Trujillo learned her game while backing up Jacki Ginnings, then blossomed as the #1 singles player when her mentor graduated.

A scrapper and a tactician, she’s the best player in the 1A Olympic League and has a legitimate shot at making a run at a state berth this coming spring.

And, this is all fine and good, but sports are just a small smidge of what makes Trujillo one of the true greats.

She is musically talented, both as a singer and guitar player, a brilliant baker (who has been kind enough to “bribe” me with some of her goodies), a protective, caring older sister to younger sibling Zoe, and deeply committed to her faith.

Now, maybe she’s killing hobos and burying them out behind the house. Anything is possible.

But everything I witnessed for the past four years, everything I have heard, points to one inescapable conclusion — Valen is the real deal.

She is kind, joyful, caring, genuinely friendly, whip-smart, strong as a rock, resolute and committed, essentially everything one looks for when they want to reach down and pluck up one student/athlete to show the world what Coupeville can produce.

Her parents, Craig and Amy, have done a remarkable job raising her and Zoe, and both girls reflect extremely well back on their parents, their faith, their school and their town.

When the time comes for Valen to leave CHS behind, when she hangs up her volleyball knee pads and her tennis racket and goes off to blossom in the outside world, it will be somewhat of a sad day.

I’ll miss seeing her streak across the horizon, a bright, burning ball of awesomeness illuminating all around her.

But it will also be a joyous day, because whatever she does with her life after high school, others who haven’t met her, who haven’t been able to enjoy having her as part of their life, will suddenly find themselves with a new blessing.

Trujillo was amazing as a middle school kid.

She’s been extraordinary as a high school teen.

Without a doubt, she’s going to make the entire world stand up and take notice of her as she becomes an adult.

So, happy birthday Valen.

And thank you, for letting all of us be a small part of your remarkable journey.

Brandon Jansen (John Fisken photos)

Brandon Jansen, putting in work. (John Fisken photos)

A refusal to back down.

That’s the trait I most associate with Brandon Jansen.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, goes all out, all day, every time I see him on the soccer pitch.

Whether he’s playing varsity or JV, in a one-goal game or a blowout, the midfielder attacks every play like it might be the last one he’s ever involved in, and he wants to make dang sure you remember he was there.

Off the field, Jansen is a smart, very friendly guy who pops up on the school honor roll and is in the stands for almost every Wolf athletic contest the school plays.

He supports his classmates in style, regardless of the sport they play, the sign of a quality dude.

Brandon is also a dead-eye shooter, one of the regulars who flies down from the stands at nearly every basketball game to show off their skills from long-range during halftime half-court shooting contests.

As he celebrates his cake day and prepares to head into his final campaign at CHS, we just want to take a moment to stop and wish him all the best.

Happy birthday, Mr. Jansen! May your day be worthy of you.

Luke Merriman

Luke Merriman: Legendary. (John Fisken and Ann Merriman photos)

He is the legend that keeps on giving.

A sharp-shooting, slick-dribbling, nattily-dressed hoops sensation who glides through the world, sly grin on his face.

Luke Merriman, who celebrates a birthday today, is the real deal — a genuine superstar who is genuinely one of the nicest guys you’ll meet.

He’s a killer on the hard-court (as long as he can keep his bones intact) and willing to put up with my shenanigans off-court, which is a sweet combo.

Few high schoolers would step up and not only accept, but seem to mostly enjoy, the hubbub created by me publishing an infamous photo of said player going to town on a hotdog (during the middle of a game).

Even as the photo was republished just about everywhere, becoming our own little Cow Town version of viral, Luke just did his version of McConaughey, sliding by with a slightly amused “Alright, alright, alright.”

Mr. Merriman is a cool customer all around, and this upcoming basketball season should be his moment to shine even brighter than ever.

With a wide open path to varsity hoops glory opening up in front of him, Luke, who will be a junior, should have considerable freedom to rain down three-point bombs alongside his fellow Wolf sharpshooters.

After a mass graduation and recent defections, CHS will have only two varsity players returning and a limited number of last year’s JV players around to move up.

Merriman could be the team’s secret weapon, though, a born shooter who lives to slay from distance and cocks an eyebrow when people start talking about the school record for treys in a single boys basketball season.

It’s 62, courtesy Brad Sherman in 2002-2003, if you’re wondering.

So my advice to Merriman?

Enjoy your birthday, bask in the cake (though check for any wandering paparazzi before putting fork to mouth), then get back to perfecting the rotation on your shot.

This is your season, your time to rise up and write your legend.

Happy birthday, Luke. Now go get ready to shred folks.

Birthday buddies Taichen Rose (top) and Gaby Halpin. (John Fisken photos)

Birthday buddies Taichen Rose (top) and Gaby Halpin. (John Fisken photos)

They are two of the best and brightest we have.

Taichen Rose and Gaby Halpin, who share a birthday today, are part of a band of young women who are at the forefront of Wolf sports.

Strong, competitive yet compassionate, intelligent, ready to help lead the future, they are a dynamic duo.

Both go their own way in the sports world, with Taichen, a junior at Coupeville High School, running the soccer pitch.

Teaming up with older sister May, the younger Rose gives the Wolf booters big energy and supreme effort.

A scrappy defender who learned her skills under the leadership of Jenn Spark, Taichen will be counted on to play a big role for this year’s team as it tries to shut down rival snipers.

Is she up to the job? Absolutely.

Rose is a winner, on and off the field,  the kind of bright young woman who is well on her way to astonishing the world with all of her achievements.

Halpin is a year younger, yet has already had a huge impact on Coupeville as well.

You don’t end up a cheerleader unless you have at least a smidge of school spirit and an outgoing attitude.

Gaby takes that and pushes the dial to 11.

She burst on the high school scene last year and immediately claimed the stage as her own, an exuberant ball o’ fire who was as loud ‘n proud as any Wolf cheerleader, maybe ever.

Through football and basketball, Halpin provided vocal and mental support to her classmates, embracing her teammates and looking very much like the future cheer captain I am sure she is destined to be.

The birthday duo both provide snapshots of the best Wolf Nation has to offer.

Happy birthday to you both. May the best be yet to come.
