Success is in their DNA.

An astonishing 17 of the 20 Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes who competed Tuesday set at least one PR.

Part of the success might have stemmed from the Wolves being able to run and throw at a facility they are well acquainted with, cause it’s their own.

The lone home meet of the CMS season, it featured Coupeville facing off with Chimacum and Blue Heron (Port Townsend) and was held under rare sunny skies.

While all of the Wolves had strong days, Bella Velasco and Ja’Kenya Hoskins led the way, both nabbing PRs in all four of their events.

Coupeville has one regular season meet left on the schedule — a trip to Sequim May 16 — then wraps the year with the league championships at Forks May 24.

A record-shattering day!!

It was a day for PRs, and cookies.

Competing at a three-team meet in Port Townsend Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School track squad ripped up its record books.

Logan Martin smashed his PR in the turbo javelin by an astonishing 47 feet, and that was just the start.

Others making big moves included Ben Smith (a 24-foot improvement in the javelin), Emily Fiedler (a 10-foot jump in the same event) and Catherine Lhamon (a 22-second time drop in the 800).

“I could go on and on!! It was a good day!!!,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

The Wolves return home for their first meet on the school’s new track Tuesday, May 9.

Middle school track? It’s back!!

The weather in Port Angeles was a constantly changing affair.

A new season begins.

Packing 20 or so athletes onto the bus, the Coupeville Middle School track and field squad headed to Port Angeles Wednesday, where it clashed in a three-team meet.

While there, the Wolves faced one team (Forks) comparable in size and one (host Stevens) which had 140+ athletes.

And yes, that is supposed to say 140 and not just 40…

While the Wolves had no shot at bringing home team titles in those kind of conditions, they did battle for individual glory, with Jake Mitten (High Jump) and Ja’Kenya Hoskins (60-yard dash) winning their events.

“We had some standout performances,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “We were able to get some places.

“We had rain, wind, sun, a little bit of it all.”

Now, as you gaze upon the following results, give me a little leeway, since A) I’m going off of handwritten results and a couple of numbers were tricky to decipher and B) not a single bit of this is appearing in the Whidbey News-Times.

So, here we go, and let’s see how close I got to reality.

The track is ours now!!

The oval just got crowded.

With the high school squad already off running (and throwing), the brand-new Coupeville track and field facilities welcomed middle school athletes into the mix this week.

Co-coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Jon Gabelein (she’s a vet, he replaces Bob Martin, who moved up to the high school squad) are joined by assistant coach (and former Wolf great) Larry Hurlburt.

They’ll be working with 26 athletes and the team’s five-meet season kicks off with a trip to Port Angeles April 27.

With the new home facilities, the Wolves will get to host a meet, as well.
