Run for glory, run for pride

“Wowza!!! Look at those improvements!”

Coupeville Middle School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting was beaming Wednesday after most of her runners PR’d at the Cascade League Championships in South Whidbey.

The Wolves wrapped a very-successful seven-meet season with their final race in Langley, which covered a 1.7 mile course.

A final kick, a final bow

Logan Downes led the Wolves with five goals.

Tavan Hughes (10) and Nick Guay (13) helped lead the Wolves into a new world.

The first season is in the books.

The Coupeville Middle School boys soccer program, which launched this fall, reached the end of the trail Wednesday, falling 4-0 to visiting Northshore Christian Academy.

The Wolves finished 2-8 in their first go-around on the pitch, with Logan Downes (5) and Andrew Williams (2) combining to rattle home Coupeville’s goals this season.

Wednesday’s game remained scoreless until the 11th minute, when Northshore got on the board thanks to a fairly spectacular goal.

One of the visitors lofted a long ball from the right side, off of a corner kick, with a teammate springing airborne to use his head to deflect the shot past Wolf goalie William Davidson.

A second score, coming on a penalty kick, put NSA up 2-0 at the halftime break, then the private school booters tacked on two more goals in the second half.

Coupeville’s defense played strongly in the loss, with especially nice work from Mason Butler, who took over in goal midway through the first half.

A newcomer to the net, he pulled off several nice saves, including making back-to-back denials as Northshore’s high-powered offense kept up a steady barrage of in-close shots.

The debut season was a learning experience for CMS coach Reese Cernick and his players, with the soccer guru witnessing improvement as the campaign played out.

In his post-season assessment, Cernick praised players such as Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, who entered the season with little experience, but exited having shown great growth and a desire to keep improving.

Bright future for young spikers

Olivia Schaffeld was one of many Wolves to showcase their talent this season.

It’s the end of the season, but not the end of the road.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads wrapped up play Tuesday with a trip to Lakewood to face a big-school rival which feeds a large 2A high school.

While the young Wolves were swept, there were bright spots, with the #1 CMS team taking a set and the #3 team pushing their hosts hard in two of three sets.

Plus, with another season of middle school ball under their belts, the Coupeville players are a year closer to joining the high school program, and bringing all their talent with them.

How the season finale played out, according to the stat sheets (if I’m reading them correctly):

 

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top squad is mostly made up of 7th graders who have spent their season learning under fire against teams dominated by 8th graders.

Tuesday, the Wolves pushed Lakewood hard, before falling 25-11, 23-25, 15-10, leaving their final record at a deceptive 1-9.

Olivia Schaffeld went out with a bang, bringing home 14 points on her serve for CMS, while Mia Farris (8), Grey Peabody (7), and Savina Wells (6) also sparkled.

Joining them on the scoring chart were Taylor Brotemarkle (5), Chloe Marzocca (3), Lyla Stuurmans (2), and Katie Marti (1).

 

Level 2:

The Wolves came up short, dropping a 25-19, 25-5, 15-7 decision, but finished with the best record of Coupeville’s three teams at 6-4.

Madison McMillan, who was a vocal leader for CMS all season, tallied eight points, while Aby Wood brought seven home.

Also scoring were Jada Heaton (4), Allison Nastali (4), Brionna Blouin (2), Skylar Parker (2), Kaitlyn Leavell (2), Ava Mitten (1), Laila Wenzel (1), and Issabel Johnson (1).

 

Level 3:

Coupeville came strong, but couldn’t quite topple Lakewood in a 25-20, 25-11, 15-13 royal rumble.

The young guns, who finished 1-9, were led by Bailey Thule’s eight points and Jackie Contreras’s seven, while Maryah Love, Gabriella Becktell, and Bryley Gilbert tossed in six apiece.

Jones Walther (4), Kaylee Clark (4), and Kassidy Upchurch (3) rounded out the scoring.

Let the spikes fly hot

The battle for Whidbey Island volleyball supremacy rages on.

At the high school level, Coupeville has dominated South Whidbey this season, while at the middle school level, the girls from Langley have gotten a bit of revenge.

Facing off for the second time this season Monday, Langley once again won two of three matches, but still couldn’t solve Coupeville’s big-serving #2 squad.

How the day played out in the CMS gym (based on what I gleaned from stat sheets, since I had a family commitment and couldn’t be there in person):

 

Level 1:

Coupeville put up its strongest fight in the first set, but was swept 25-14, 25-4, 15-6.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-8 on the season, heading into the finale Tuesday at Lakewood.

Savina Wells paced CMS, racking up seven points off of her serve, while Grey Peabody backed her up with a five-spot.

Also scoring for the Wolves were Olivia Schaffeld (3), Mia Farris (3), Katie Marti (2), Chloe Marzocca (2), Lyla Stuurmans (1), and Taylor Brotemarkle (1).

 

Level 2:

Coupeville’s most-dangerous team rolled to a 25-18, 25-19 win, then dropped a third practice set 15-11.

With the season sweep of their next door neighbors, the Wolves clinch a winning season at 6-3.

Leading the way for CMS were Jada Heaton, who sparked her team to 16 points, Brionna Blouin (12), and Madison McMillan (10).

Chipping in to the team cause were Allison Nastali (5), Kaitlyn Leavell (5), Issabel Johnson (5), Laila Wenzel (3), Ava Mitten (3), and Aby Wood (2).

 

Level 3:

Like Coupeville’s #1 team, its #3 squad put together its best work in the first frame, before falling 25-11, 25-7, 15-5.

With the loss, the young Wolves sit at 1-8 headed into their finale.

Oktober Frost, owner of the best name in the volleyball biz, led the way with five points off of her serve, while Bailey Thule, Bryley Gilbert, Kaylee Clark, and Emma Garcia racked up three apiece.

Maryah Love (2), Jones Walther (1), Jackie Contreras (1), Kassidy Upchurch (1), and Gabriella Becktell (1) also scored for Coupeville.

Booters get bogged down in the mud

William Davidson and Co. have one game left on their schedule, a home bout Wednesday.

It rained all over the world Monday afternoon.

Or at least it seemed that way, as the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer squad escaped drenched Whidbey Island, only to end up in drenched Granite Falls.

With the liquid sunshine coming down in buckets, the Wolf booters found themselves sliding across the field, which made mounting an offensive attack nearly impossible in a 4-0 road loss.

With the defeat, the first-year CMS soccer program slips to 2-7 heading into its season finale at home Wednesday.

Coupeville hosts Northshore Christian Academy in a game set to kick off at 3:30 PM.

The weather forecast currently calls for 55 degrees, partly cloudy, mildly windy, and little to no precipitation.

So, exactly the opposite of Monday’s mess.

“Was a muddy game. Every time someone tried to plant their foot, they would end up on their butt,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick. “We took several shots from several players and couldn’t get one in.

“I told the guys to just have fun and play a muddy game.”

The Wolves had rung up wins in both of their previous meetings with the Tigers, but this time Granite was a different team, Cernick said.

“Very proud of the team, they tried hard, but Granite Falls played the best we’ve seen them all season.”
