Do it for the thrill of competition.

Do it for the glow of being #1.

Do it for the homemade cookies.

But whatever you do it for, just do it.

With Race the Reserve — the biggest fundraiser for the Coupeville High School Class of 2023 — set for Saturday, Aug. 13, organizers are scrambling to field a full team of volunteers.

They’ve launched a competition between Wolf fall sports teams, with the team with the most volunteers nabbing the Golden Shoe Award and a batch of cookies from acclaimed cook Helene Lhamon.

It’s a royal rumble between volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross country, and football, with a tasty finale.

Volunteers are currently needed for:

Food Team (1)
Parking (3)
Photographer (1)
Race clean-up (9)
Race set-up (2)
Registration (5)
Water at Hill Road (1)
Water at Wanamaker (2)

Larry and Sylvia Hurlburt ran this year’s Ragnar Relays to honor the memory of mom Kristin.

It’s a party, with some running tossed in to keep things interesting.

Now, I’ll admit it — I’ve never felt the urge to join the Ragnar Relays and be part of a group which runs from Blaine to the southern tip of Whidbey Island.

In fact, my enduring memory of the event comes from a few years back, when I was jolted awake at 4:57 AM by support crew folks letting rip with air horns as runners straggled past my duplex at the corner of Madrona and Sherman.

That being said, the 2022 edition featured support crews more in touch with their softer side — no air horns in my neighborhood until after 10 AM this time around.

Though, from the photos scattered across Facebook — several of which I’ve poached, thanks to the generous natures of Sylvia Hurlburt, Helene Lhamon, Amanda Fabrizi, and James Steller — it looks like the party was still in full swing.

Many hands make light the work.

The runners are coming, and so are the fundraising opportunities.

The annual Ragnar Relay, which sends teams from Blaine to Langley over the course of two days and a night, kicks off today.

As the runners descend like locusts on Whidbey, the Coupeville High School Class of 2023 is taking advantage.

Students, parents, and other volunteers will be selling breakfast to participants, with profits going to post-graduation festivities.

The Class of 2023 is also helping flag traffic in Langley from 1:30-8:30 PM Saturday and is still in need of more volunteers.

Completing that task will garner an $850 donation for the CHS students.

Coupeville’s James Steller finished 13th in the main event at Sunday’s Whidbey Island Marathon.

The 2022 edition of the Whidbey Island Marathon brought out 860 runners across four races Sunday morning.

But we’re only here to talk about 16 of them.

If you listed Oak Harbor, or Mukilteo, or some random city in West Virginia as your hometown, good on you for lacing up your running shoes.

But here, on a blog called Coupeville Sports, the only people to get their names published are those who actually listed Cow Town as their residence.

Want to see the other 844 names? Pop over to:

Charlie and Tammy Smith

Enjoy the outdoors and help one of Coupeville’s favorite Wolf Moms.

As Tammy Smith fights breast cancer, daughters Ciara and Ema have launched a number of fundraisers to help their mom.

Their primary goal has been to give her a professionally crafted wig — using their own hair — as her body battles through chemotherapy.

A GoFundMe — https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-tamtam-save-the-tatas?qid=1a74bcca7e65e30bde2db1bb489b0aae — has received 50 donations.

And now the Smith sisters are holding a Color Run 5K Saturday, Apr. 30.

The event will start at 9 AM at Coupeville’s Living Hope Foursquare Church (105 NW Broadway).

Kids, dogs, scooters, and strollers are welcome, and suggested donations are $10 for individuals and $25 for a group of four.

To sign up, email your names to run4tamtam@gmail.com.
