A new season opens!!

No undefeated teams.

That’s a guarantee, as all 12 North Sound Conference basketball teams have taken at least one loss after the first week of the season.

In fact, the early non-conference schedule has not been kind, with NSC girls teams combining to go 2-11, while the boys are 1-10.

Heck, even the King’s girls and their all-world freshman are sitting at 0-2, after absorbing losses to Moses Lake and Cashmere.

But we plow ahead, with another week full of games set to unfold.

Coupeville’s hoops squads have three games in the next six days, with road trips Monday to Sequim and Saturday to Orcas Island, wrapped around a home doubleheader Wednesday with Friday Harbor.

Onward and upward, ever in pursuit of a few more wins.

To everything there is a finish.

With the North Sound Conference down to just two teams still alive in the playoffs – King’s volleyball and soccer – this is our last league standings update.

For a few weeks.

Once high school basketball games kick off, we’ll be right back here every Sunday morning.

But, until then, this is it for fall.

If you deeply care how King’s does at the state tourney, where both of its squads are the defending 1A champs, you can easily find those results elsewhere next week.

This isn’t Knights Sports.

At least not until they come through with some of that sweet, sweet private school pay-off cash to keep me in the style I dream about…

Anyways.

Entering this past week, there were still multiple teams from other NSC schools alive, but, one by one, they all fell.

Coupeville and South Whidbey volleyball went down, Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey soccer fell, and the league’s football squads got bushwhacked.

Big time.

Facing off the with always-tough Northwest Conference, the gridiron squads from the NSC were swept aside in four games.

Meridian drilled South Whidbey 59-8, Lynden Christian rapped King’s 42-14 and Mount Baker made it a two-fer.

The Mountainers destroyed Granite Falls 61-0 in the play-in game, then thumped NSC champ Cedar Park 49-10.

With those wins, the Northwest Conference accounts for three of the 16 football teams headed to the state playoffs, while the North Sound Conference comes up empty in year one.

At least on the gridiron, since, as I said up top, King’s can still repeat as state champs in two sports.

To which, as public school supporters, we say … yay???

Nope.

Playoff fever rages!!

Wolf fans jam the bleachers.

It’s edge of your seat time.

With every fall sport having wrapped regular season play, we’re fully into playoff mode.

10 North Sound Conference teams are still alive for a state title, though the only one we truly care about on this blog is the Coupeville volleyball squad.

Having split two matches at the district tourney Saturday, the Wolf spikers sit a win away from advancing to bi-districts.

That match arrives Tuesday, when CHS travels to Lynden to face Nooksack Valley.

King’s (volleyball, football, soccer) and South Whidbey (VB, FB, soccer) account for six of the other nine squads still alive in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cedar Park Christian is alive in football and soccer and Granite Falls is still kicking in football, though Tiger soccer, which tied for second-place in the NSC, is the highest seed to have been knocked out of the postseason.

Sultan, with every team eliminated, gets ready for winter sports.

Some things end, while others are just picking up steam.

Two Coupeville High School fall sports squads – girls soccer and boys tennis – brought their season to an end this past week.

Meanwhile, cross country, football and volleyball play on, with a mix of postseason and regular-season action left on the schedule.

The week ahead brings the district meet for the harriers Oct. 27, as they try and earn slots at the state cross country meet.

Meanwhile, football hosts Granite Falls Oct. 26.

The Wolves will celebrate departing players on Senior Night and still have a (faint) hope of punching their playoff ticket.

If they can’t get to the postseason, the Wolf gridiron squad is likely to get a cross-over game against another non-playoff team to wrap up the season during week #10.

Volleyball is flying high, and enters the final week of the regular season in second-place in the six-team North Sound Conference.

The Wolves have home games Oct. 23 against defending state champ King’s, and Oct. 25 against cellar dweller Sultan.

If everything goes perfectly, CHS could soar as high as sharing the league crown with King’s, but are guaranteed a slot in the double-elimination district tourney either way.

Push for the playoffs!!

Fall sports, while still in full swing, are definitely starting to wind down a bit as we plunge into the middle of Oct.

Boys tennis and girls soccer both wrap up their regular seasons this week, and both Coupeville squads could end their entire run as early as the weekend.

The netters host Seattle Academy Monday and Eastside Prep Wednesday, before traveling to Seattle Saturday for the Emerald City League tourney.

The Wolves will be bringing two singles players and two doubles teams to the Amy Yee Tennis Center.

Finish highly enough, and you get to pop back to the same locale the next day for districts. Don’t, and all that’s left is to plan for the season-ending banquet.

Soccer hosts South Whidbey Monday, travels to Granite Falls Wednesday and then may have an extra game Saturday.

If the Wolves and Sultan remain tied for fifth-place, and the last playoff berth out of the North Sound Conference, they meet Oct. 20 to decide who moves on, and who turns in uniforms.

That game would be in Sultan, as the Turks got a better draw when league Athletic Directors did a blind draw for postseason seeding.

Whichever team nets the #5 slot advances to the double-elimination district tourney, where they open against defending state champion King’s.

While cross country also kicks off its postseason run next weekend, volleyball and football still have two weeks left of regular season play.

The gridiron gang goes to Bothell Friday to play Cedar Park Christian, then returns home for Senior Night Oct. 26 against Granite Falls.

The Wolves are hanging on to faint playoff hopes, and the next two weeks will decide whether they spend week #10 kicking off the postseason or looking for a final cross-over game with another non-playoff squad.

Volleyball, which is far and away enjoying the best season of any Wolf program, has a big clash Monday, when the Wolves welcome South Whidbey to town.

The winner of that game will sit in sole-possession of second-place with three matches to go.

After that, Coupeville’s spikers travel to Granite Falls Wednesday, then have match-ups with first-place King’s and cellar-dweller Sultan the week after.
