We’ll need the big van!!

Skyler Lawrence was back on the victory stand Friday, but this time she was on top of the podium after winning a district title in the shot put.

The trip to the state track meet was a lonely one for Makana Stone last year.

This year she’ll have plenty of company.

Stone, who finished second in the 400 last year as a sophomore, will be going back to Cheney for a third straight year, and this time she’ll be taking a bunch of teammates with her.

Six Wolves punched tickets to the 1A state meet with their performances Friday at districts, and there’s still a full day of competition ahead.

The two-day District III meet, held at North Mason High School, wraps up Saturday.

In day one, Wolf throwers Dalton Martin (discus) and Skyler Lawrence (shot put) won district titles, with both setting PRs with their throws.

Stone claimed second in the 400 and both of the relay teams she is running on — the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 — finished second as well with season-best times.

She’s joined on both squads by Sylvia Hurlburt, Marisa Etzell and Lauren Grove.

Top two finishes earn a berth to state.

At the half-way point, Coupeville is fourth in the girls’ team standings and seventh in the boys.

Cascade Christian and Port Townsend hold the leads currently.

Chris Battaglia was locked in.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth grader won two events en route to four top-three finishes Wednesday at a three-team track meet in Sultan.

Battaglia swept to wins in the discus and high jump, placed third in the shot put and claimed second in the long jump — an event he picked up at the last moment because he needed something to do while waiting for his regular events.

“He had great results! Amazing athlete, some PRs … pretty good meet!,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

Other multiple winners included Maya Toomey-Stout (100, long jump), Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles, 200) and Danny Conlisk (200, 1600).

Mallory Kortuem (400), Gabe Eck (100), Jasmine Nastali (long jump) and Cassidy Moody (100 hurdles) rounded out the Wolf winners, as CMS ran away with 12 titles.

Lakewood and Sultan had much deeper teams than Coupeville and used their superior depth to claim the team titles on a day when the temperature climbed to a sticky 80 degrees.

Run (and throw) to glory!!

They had the wins, and, even though they didn’t have enough places to carry the day, they put on a big show.

Despite boasting less than half the student body of league rival Klahowya, the Coupeville High School girls’ track team came dangerously close to capturing a team title at Saturday’s Sub-District meet in Bremerton.

Riding the crest of eight wins, including a sweep of the relays and sprints, the Wolves finished second to the Eagles, who used far superior depth to eke out a 97-74 win.

Port Townsend and Chimacum trailed far behind.

On the boys side, Port Townsend claimed top honors, followed by Klahowya, Chimacum and Coupeville.

Like all track meets, however, the real focus was on individual accomplishment, with top three finishers earning a berth to next weekend’s district meet, the last stop before state.

Wolves who finished fourth in their event may still live on, as well, once all the numbers come in.

If their time/throw was better than the #5 result from the Nisqually League, they will also move on.

As it stands now, Coupeville will advance eight girls and four boys in individual events, plus two relay teams.

Coupeville got two wins from zippy junior Makana Stone (200, 400) and one apiece from Sylvia Hurlburt (100), Skyler Lawrence (Shot Put), Lauren Bayne (High Jump) and Lauren Grove (Triple Jump).

The Wolves also swept the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 (Grove, Hurlburt, Stone, Marisa Etzell), while Dalton Martin claimed Coupeville’s lone boys title in the discus.

If Lindsey Roberts is the new Makana Stone, then Danny Conlisk is the new Lindsey Roberts.

Roberts continued her perfect start to her 8th grade track season, ripping off two more wins Wednesday at a four-team meet in Shoreline, but Conlisk went her one better.

While Roberts cruised to wins in both sprints (200) and sprinting while evading obstacles (100 hurdles), Conlisk rolled, snatching victories in the 100, 200 and 1600.

Together, the duo accounted for five of Coupeville Middle School’s eight wins.

Seventh grade hurdlers Cassidy Moody and Jean Lund-Olsen and eighth grade high jumper Chris Battaglia also came away with top of the podium performances.

Langley swept both team titles on the girls side of the competition, while King’s (8th) and Northshore Christian (7th) split the boys titles.

What in the world did Grey Rische have for breakfast?

Whatever the Coupeville High School sophomore ingested Monday, it fueled him up big time.

By the time he was done rampaging through the Olympic League JV track and field championships at North Mason High School, Rische had set three PRs — including busting his best mark in the javelin by a jaw-dropping nine feet — and captured one of four victories by Wolf athletes.

Equally impressive were freshman Jesse Hester, who ran away with titles in both the 110 and 300 hurdles and sophomore Alexxis Otto, who claimed top honors in the shot put.

Her throw went more than three feet further than her previous best.

In a field of 10 schools, Coupeville finished 6th in the boys team standings and 7th on the girls side. 2A schools North Kitsap (boys) and North Mason (girls) took the team titles.
