Tamsin Ward is not messing around.

The Coupeville Middle School 6th grader won three events Thursday in her home track and field debut, giving her five victories across her first two meets.

Ward romped to wins in the 100, shot put, and long jump, setting PR’s in the latter two of those events.

Facing off with South Whidbey and Lakewood, the Wolves won 10 events and set 86 PR’s on a cold, wet “spring” afternoon.

Joining Ward on the victory stand was fellow 6th grader Hyley Farrell, who won the 200 and led off a victorious 4 x 200 relay unit.

That team also included 6th graders Kennedy O’Neill, Elizabeth Marshall, and Sage Stavros.

CMS 7th graders Lillian Ketterling (Discus), Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump), and Nick Laska (Discus) came out on top as well, with Kayla Crane (1600) the lone Wolf 8th grader to win an event.

Coupeville’s 6th/7th grade girls won the team title, joining Lakewood (6th/7th boys) and South Whidbey (8th girls, 8th boys) as front-runners.

Pulling off a successful home meet, especially on a dank day, took the work of many, with high school coaches and athletes helping their middle school counterparts.

CHS alum Jaylen Nitta, who has worked with both the middle and high school teams, stepped in to be the starter, and kept everything moving smoothly.

The young Wolves return to action next Wednesday, May 10, when they host South Whidbey for the final home meet of the season.

They’re being honored, all 74 of them.

Coupeville High School track and field athletes have been tabbed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as one of its Team of the Month winners for April.

Each month the WIAA, with the sponsorship of Les Schwab Tire Centers, honors teams, either from athletics or activities, in each of the state’s classifications.

CHS track reps 2B, while fellow Northwest 2B/1B League school Mount Vernon Christian was hailed for its 1B baseball program.

Royal softball (1A), Archbishop Thomas Murphy boys’ golf (2A), Liberty (Issaquah) softball (3A) and Tahoma baseball (4A) round out the April honorees.

The selections are based on “performance, dedication in the classroom, and service to the community.”

Teams receive a trophy and a $100 donation to their program.

Hear the Wolves howl.

Coupeville High School track and field lit up Jack Whitaker Field in La Conner Wednesday, throwing down a dominant performance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Boasting a deep roster, the Wolf boys cruised to a team title, doubling up their closest rival, while the CHS girls narrowly finished second to powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian.

Coupeville’s male athletes captured nine wins en route to rolling up 155 points.

La Conner (77), MVC (62), Friday Harbor (37), and Orcas Island (23) rounded out the team scoring.

Among the girls, the battle was much closer, with MVC holding off CHS 154.5-129.5.

Friday Harbor (36), La Conner (31), and Orcas (20) were way, way back of the titanic twosome.

Coupeville’s girls brought home eight titles of their own, with the Wolves claiming the top spot on the podium in 17 of the day’s 35 events.

Wolf senior Aidan Wilson led the way, earning top honors in the 400, 800, and triple jump, while sophomore Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800) and senior Mitchell Hall (1600, 3200) were double winners.

CHS female stars notching wins included Monroe Myles (100), Claire Mayne (100 Hurdles), Carolyn Lhamon (Shot Put), Katie Marti (Javelin), and Ryanne Knoblich (High Jump).

Zac Tackett (Discus), Nick Guay (High Jump), and Nehemiah Myles (Long Jump) are also league champs, as are the girls 4 x 400 relay squad and the boys 4 x 100 unit.

“They all ran, jumped, threw beautifully!” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “It was a good day!!!!!!!”

Next up for the Wolves is the district meet Saturday, May 13, which they will host.

That event, which is the direct lead-in to the state meet, kicks off at 11:00 AM at Coupeville’s Mickey Clark Field.

CHS track star Tate Wyman is ranked in the top 10 state-wide in two events. (Sherry Bonacci photo)

We’re entering the stretch run, where every second and every inch counts big-time.

High school track and field enters the postseason this week, with Coupeville traveling to La Conner Wednesday for the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

After that, depending on performance, is districts and the state meet.

That means, across the state, every track athlete is gunning to throw down PR’s, which creates near-constant movement on the top 10 charts.

Coming off of strong work at Saturday’s Sunny and 70s Invitational, seniors Claire Mayne and Tate Wyman hurdle their way back into the mix for a top spot.

Also jumping onto a top 10 chart is fellow 12th grader Taygin Jump, who made her debut in the hammer throw an auspicious one.

At the same time, several Wolves who sat out Saturday’s meet find themselves bumped off the list, for the moment at least.

And, in a side note, there’s the case of sophomore Katie Marti, currently ranked #10 in the javelin with a throw of 98 feet, 10 inches.

Paul Messner’s granddaughter also has a throw of 100-04, which came at the one-team Coupeville Classic Invitational.

While listed as Marti’s PR, that lob has not been acknowledged as an official mark yet, however, because of complicated regulations on how results are reported, and what is considered “official” and “unofficial.”

With that in mind, a look at where the Wolves rank state-wide among 2B athletes as of May 1:

Can’t hold ’em down.

Despite being the only “B” school in the 26-team field, Coupeville High School track and field held its own Saturday at the Sunny and 70 Invitational in Lakewood.

The Wolves claimed 13th in the boys’ standings and 14th in the girls, while 4A Kamiak (boys) and 3A Stanwood (girls) took home team titles.

Plus, the Wolves finished ahead of next-door neighbor South Whidbey, a 1A school, on both sides of the ledger, always a sweet cherry on top of the sundae.

The popular meet drew three 4A schools, four from 3A, seven from 2A, and 11 from 1A to go with 2B Coupeville.

Things actually started Friday with the hammer throw, and Wolf senior Taygin Jump made her debut in the event, finishing 9th against seasoned competitors.

Saturday’s meet, in which Coupeville athletes scored 11 PR’s, was the last regular-season event on the schedule.

The Wolves travel to La Conner Wednesday for the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

After that is the district meet, held May 13 in Coupeville, and the state meet May 27-29 in Yakima.
