Ginny Vracin

Working for 12+ years at Videoville, I came in contact with a lot of customers.

One of the nicest was Ginny Vracin, who always had a smile and a nice word for me, even when the movie I recommended wasn’t her cup of tea.

Mrs. Vracin, who passed away Mar. 26 at the age of 72, was a wonderful woman and she and her husband, Dr. Wylie Vracin, were always a welcome sight in my video store days.

All four of their children — Emily, Nicholas, Damon and Danielle — have grown up to be talented, outgoing and deeply caring, very much like their parents.

There was a service for Ginny last Friday, but I just wanted to share two things here.

A video tribute, which you can see below, and the words her family offered.

In lieu of flowers, they instead asked, “Please welcome all who cross your path, smile incessantly, frequent garage sales, reuse everything imaginable, volunteer your time and passions and pick up trash on walks in memory of our sweet Ginny.”

“It’s good to be the king, baby!”

Randy King’s fan club stays up late.

When I went to bed Tuesday night, the battle in the 2nd annual CHS Coach Supreme poll was a very-close, three-person tussle.

By the time I emerged from my covers Wednesday morning, the Wolf track guru had emerged as a solid winner, holding off the combined forces of softball coaches Kevin and Justine McGranahan.

King, who has the most seasons of any active coach at the school, covering past stints in basketball and football and his current run in track, follows in the wake of Ryan King (no relation), who won the poll in its inaugural season.

Despite the fact I’m 99.99% certain he didn’t cast a single vote for himself, Randy loyalists got their man a totally prestigious, and totally imaginary, award.

He finished with 1,024 votes, which accounted for 22.82% of the 4,487 cast.

Rounding out the top five were Kevin McGranahan (605), Justine McGranahan (580), track assistant Sylvia Hurlburt (400) and volleyball head man Cory Whitmore (363).

There was a field of 30 coaches in the poll, covering everyone who was a head or assistant coach at Coupeville High School during the 2017-2018 school year.

No, it will never, ever stop raining this spring.

That point was driven home yet again Tuesday, as the Coupeville High School girls tennis squad traveled to Silverdale, got on the court, but then couldn’t finish its match.

A key 1A Olympic League tilt, it ground to a halt with four of seven varsity matches in the book and things tied 2-2.

Of the three remaining matches yet to be finished, CHS trailed at #2 singles, led at #3 doubles and was just starting #4 doubles.

The match will be completed Apr. 26 when Coupeville returns to Silverdale for the third and final match of the season with the Eagles.

For the moment, the Wolves (2-0 in league play, 3-5 overall) hold a game-and-a-half lead on Klahowya (0-1, 1-5) and Chimacum (0-1, 1-6) in the league standings as they chase a fourth-straight conference title.

Coupeville is scheduled to host Friday Harbor Wednesday (3:30 PM) in a non-conference match.

The biggest surprise? The weather forecast for Central Whidbey is for 56 degrees and … NO RAIN.

I’ll believe it when I see it…

Semi-complete Tuesday results:

Almost history!!

Admit it, few saw this coming.

Playing on the road Monday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer team came within a deflected ball here or there of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in 1A Olympic League history.

Getting a pair of goals from sophomore Derek Leyva, the Wolves pushed Klahowya to the very end in a 3-2 thriller, narrowly missing a chance to shatter the Eagles four-year unbeaten streak in conference action.

With the escape, KSS (5-0 in league, 8-2-1 overall) cements its lead in the standings, going two games up on Coupeville (3-2, 4-5-2) with four to play.

The two schools play again in two weeks, when the Eagles visit Whidbey for the regular-season finale.

That Apr. 30 game will be Senior Night for the Wolves.

Between now and then, the CHS boys, who have never finished higher than third in the Olympic League, will play Port Townsend (1-3) twice and Chimacum (0-4) once.

If they replicate Monday’s effort, the Wolves will massacre the RedHawks and Cowboys.

With his two goals, Derek Leyva pushed his season total to 18, pulling him within two of cousin Abraham Leyva’s single-season Wolf boys mark of 20 scores.

He scored in each half, twice knotting the game up.

Klahowya could never get its lead above one goal, but did manage to slip in a final score late in the game to avoid overtime.

Wolf senior defender Hunter Downes praised his teammates across the board for their play.

“(Goalie) Dewitt (Cole) had a pretty nice game with some good saves, Derek did his usual thing, Will (Nelson) had a good game,” Downes said. “Basically, everyone played well.”

Hitting the back of the net twice against the Eagles is a major step for CHS, as the Wolves had only scored twice in eight previous games against Klahowya.

Coupeville had been shut-out six times, including a 5-0 loss earlier this season, and entered Monday having been outscored 38-2 all-time by KSS.

Klahowya had only surrendered six goals in 10 games this season, with six shutouts.

The Wolves join soccer powers Kingston and University Prep as the only teams to notch two goals this year against the Eagles.

Also, Monday’s game was the first time a 1A Olympic League rival came within a single goal of Klahowya.

The Eagles, who’ve been to state two of the past three years, carried in a 25-0 record in conference games.

KSS had gone 6-0, 6-0 and 9-0 in the first three seasons (2015-2017) of the league, before running off four straight shutout wins this seasons.

In those 25 games Klahowya outscored its three “rivals” 136-8, with only three games being decided by as few as two goals.

Coupeville had never come closer than three scores in any previous match-up with the Eagles.

Halfway in and the stat sheet is on fire.

The Coupeville High School softball squad, which jumps into the second half of the regular season this week with games against La Conner and Klahowya, is humming along at 7-3.

Coming off of an offensive fireworks show at Friday Harbor, the Wolves have some impressive numbers, and I’m here to share them with you.
