They were done, then they weren’t done after all, and now they’re really done.

The Coupeville Middle School boys basketball schedule took a series of twists and turns at the end of the season, but it all worked out in the end, with the Wolves getting a 10th game Monday in Port Townsend.

The CMS 7th graders took advantage, drilling Blue Heron 50-34, clinching a winning season at 6-4. The younger Wolves beat four of five teams in their league this season.

Playing with a much-thinner roster (they tipped off Monday with six players and finished with three, thanks to foul trouble) the CMS 8th graders stayed close for a half, but fell 50-35.

The older group finished the season 2-8.

Monday’s 7th grade game was decided in the third quarter, when the Wolves savaged their hosts 18-5.

Clinging to a 20-17 lead coming out of the halftime break, Coupeville immediately jumped on its foes, with balanced scoring from Xavier Murdy (six in the quarter), Hawthorne Wolfe (5) and Caleb Meyer (5).

Wolfe led the attack all night, finishing with a game-high 16, while Murdy tallied a season-best 14 and Meyer pounded home nine.

Logan Martin banked in six, Connor Barton tickled the twines for five and Tony Garcia, Aiden Burdge, Logan Wertz, Jonathan Carroll and Cody Roberts all saw floor time.

The 8th graders stayed within 20-14 in the first half, but the third quarter killed their hopes. Outscored 18-11, they faded down the stretch as, one by one, they lost bodies.

Jake Mitten closed out his middle school career with 14, while Daniel Olson (9), Sage Downes (7) and Dakota Eck (5) also scored.

Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez will join that foursome in making the jump to high school hoops next year.

Kailey Kellner

Kailey Kellner has the hottest shooting touch in town.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad wrapped up its semi-annual free throw shooting competition/fundraiser and the senior gunner took the top spot.

Kellner dropped in 79 of 100, edging junior Mia Littlejohn, who knocked down 70-100, but since she had a hot streak going as free throw #100 tickled the twines, she was allowed to keep shooting.

She promptly knocked down eight more in a row from the charity stripe, running her streak to 20 makes in a row, then bounced one off the rim to finish 87-109.

Kellner inherits the crown from Wynter Thorne, who won the last competition in 2015.

Lauren Rose (67), Kalia Littlejohn (66) and Kyla Briscoe (63) rounded out the top five, with Briscoe (11) and Allison Wenzel (10) joining Kellner in putting together double-digit streaks of consecutive makes.

All total, 20 Wolf girls, varsity and JV, each put up 100 attempts, raising money to aid the CHS hoops program.

Players got family, friends and fans to pledge per made free throw, or make a lump donation.

One is riding sky-high, the other is fighting for its playoff life.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Coupeville High School basketball squads are going in opposite directions.

The Wolf girls need just one win in their final four league games to clinch a third-straight Olympic League crown, while the CHS boys sit a half game off of their conference’s final postseason slot.

Now 23-0 all-time in Olympic League play, the girls will go for the clincher at home Tuesday against last-place Klahowya.

After an unprecedented eight straight games on the road — Tuesday’s tilt will be their first home game in 45 days — the Wolf girls play five of their final six in their own gym.

The CHS boys, who came within a play of stunning league champ Port Townsend Friday night, will have to succeed on the road, as they travel off of Whidbey four of their final five games, including all three league affairs left to play.

Where things sit through Monday morning:

Makana Stone (John Fisken photo)

Makana Stone got her moment in the spotlight, and it paid dividends for the Whitman College women’s basketball squad.

Making her debut as a college starter Sunday, the freshman phenom and former Coupeville High School star lit a spark under the Blues, who roared out to a 10-0 lead en route to knocking off highly-ranked George Fox University.

Stone snatched four boards, scored a bucket, doled out an assist and rejected a shot in the game’s opening minutes, helping Whitman roll to an 82-74 win.

That snaps a two-game skid for the Blues and lifts them to 15-2 overall, 6-2 in the Northwest Conference.

They move back into second-place, trailing just front-runner Puget Sound (8-0).

Stone, who has been one of the first players off the bench in every game this season, got the nod as a starter on the road and responded.

She finished with five points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 23 minutes of action, including grabbing the game’s first and last rebounds.

After adding three more boards and her second block in the second quarter, Stone picked up two of her three assists at a crucial moment early in the fourth.

She fed Emily Rommel, who scored a team-high 20, on back-to-back buckets to stake Whitman to a 62-60 lead.

Through 17 games, Stone is averaging 5.0 points and 5.1 rebounds a night.

Her 87 boards put her third on the team, while she also has 15 assists, seven blocks and 11 steals.
