They got the beat, and the shooting touch

The numbers keep trending up.

Heading into a busy week of basketball, there are now eight Wolves who have cracked 100 points this season — six boys and two girls.

Logan Downes, who reached #1 on the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball career scoring chart Saturday, is, not surprisingly, our top scorer this season.

Sitting at #2 is sophomore Camden Glover, who leads an explosive JV squad which features three 100+ point scorers, and two more guys close to joining them.

Overall, CHS hoops stars have combined to rain down 2,237 points this season, of which 2,211 are fully accounted for in our stats watch.

Embrace that 2B life, Wolves

Get comfortable, cause no one is going anywhere.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association finalized its classification numbers Sunday for the 2024-2028 cycle, and the seven-team Northwest 2B/1B League won’t be affected at all.

Well, a little bit, but in a pro-Coupeville way.

The Wolves, Friday Harbor, and La Conner remain as 2B schools, while Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island go from 1B to 2B.

Darrington and Concrete remain as 1B institutions.

With the NWL going from a league where 1B schools held the edge at 4-3, to one where 2B schools now dominate 5-2, will increase playoff opportunities in most sports for the bigger schools.

So, a positive for Coupeville, which has the largest student body in the league.

Now, the change won’t affect football, as MVC and Orcas don’t practice the dark arts of the gridiron, but God’s Chosen Sport — basketball — will definitely benefit.

When setting numbers, the WIAA takes into consideration each school’s free and reduced lunches, though it calls that “Direct Cert” now.

If a school has a rate greater than the state average of 34%, its enrollment number is reduced, with a cap at 40%.

Two NWL schools — La Conner and Concrete — had their numbers adjusted for this reason.

Schools with an adjusted student body of 1-104 land in 1B, with 105-224 calling 2B home.

Going forward, there are 54 schools in 2B and 105 in 1B.

For those that care, the other numbers are 60 schools in 4A, 73 in 3A, 63 in 2A, and 55 in 1A.

Whidbey Island’s two other schools, Oak Harbor (1,179.88 students) and South Whidbey (273.63) remain 3A and 1A schools in the next cycle.

The next classification cycle begins in August and runs through the 2027-2028 school year, assuring current Coupeville Middle School 8th graders will be 2B athletes for the entirety of their high school careers.

Teams rise, teams fall, playoffs beckon

Tension mounts.

Another week in the books, and the end of the regular season looms for Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams.

Coupeville sits with 15 games played, and five more on the schedule, meaning the upcoming week will be a busy one.

The Wolf boys, battling for league supremacy with La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian, welcome Concrete to town Tuesday, then wrap the week with a pair of non-conference tilts.

South Whidbey travels to Cow Town Wednesday for a makeup game, before Brad Sherman’s squad hops on the bus Saturday to go play Chief Leschi in Puyallup.

For the Wolf girls, it’s a two-game week, as Megan Richter’s team hosts Concrete and travels to Chief Leschi.

As we count down the minutes until tipoff, where things sit through Jan. 21:

Best of times, worst of times

It was a mixed bag, man.

Saturday’s matchup with visiting Neah Bay was a Jekyll and Hyde sort of experience for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad, with one huge high and way too many lows.

Wolf senior Logan Downes delivered the spotlight moment, drilling a second-quarter three-ball to become the #1 scorer in the 107-year history of CHS boys’ hoops.

But at virtually every other moment, Coupeville, fresh off a huge league win the night before, played its worst game of the season.

Falling 64-41 to the Red Devils, the Wolves looked out of sorts on offense, on defense, and even when taking water breaks.

Not even a fire drill midway through the fourth quarter — with a possibly burnt concession stand hamburger sending the crowd two steps out the front door before everyone got to turn right back around — was a complete success.

The good news is the loss was a non-conference one.

And the upcoming schedule breaks much more in the favor of the Wolves, with Concrete (6-9) and South Whidbey (2-12) coming to Coupeville next Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Oh, and the gym didn’t burn down. There’s that, too.

Neah Bay, ranked #5 in 1B by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association RPI, arrived in Cow Town looking for a sixth-straight win, and the Red Devils led from start to finish.

Downes, who entered play needing 11 points to pass Jeff Stone and Mike Bagby for the career scoring title, dropped a pair of three-balls through the net in the opening quarter.

But that was it for offense from the Wolves, who found themselves on the wrong end of a 14-6 score at the first break.

Things didn’t get much better from there, as the visitors stretched the lead out to double digits early in the second quarter, never allowing CHS to get the margin down under 10 the rest of the night.

A third trey from Downes midway through the second quarter gave him the record with 1,138 points, but Coupeville went to the locker room looking for answers and trailing 33-18.

The new scoring king will be honored in a pre-game ceremony at Tuesday’s clash with Concrete.

The Wolves finally seemed to flip a switch, for a moment, opening the third on a 7-2 run, only to have Neah Bay answer with a 10-5 surge of its own.

Things got sloppy in the fourth, with Coupeville throwing bad passes, being outrebounded at a terrifying rate, and being unable to keep any rallies alive.

A late 13-2 run by the Red Devils made the final score seem more lopsided than it really was, but it was never close, either.

The hometown crowd had one late roar left in its collective lungs for Mikey Robinett, who came off the bench to bank in the game’s final bucket, but that was a small salve.

Downes finished with a game-high 23, running his career total to 1,150, while Chase Anderson rattled the rim for seven points.

Cole White (4), Ryan Blouin (3), Nick Guay (2), and Robinett (2) rounded out the scorers.

Also seeing floor time were Zane Oldenstadt, Hurlee Bronec, Timothy Nitta, William Davidson, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Hunter Bronec, and Aiden O’Neill.

One and all should expect an intense practice Monday afternoon.
