Smile and say cheese!

Nine out of 11 ain’t bad.

We’re kicking off a new week with a photographic look at Coupeville High School coaches, though we’re missing two.

That’s because I already used soccer guru Kyle Nelson’s pic earlier this season.

And, for whatever reason, I’ve never seen head shots for this year’s Wolf cross country squad, which rules out trail queen Paige Spangler.

At least for now.

But the other nine coaches, covering volleyball, cheer, football, and boys soccer, are here, and awaiting — in alphabetic order — your perusal.

Long trip, big results

It’s the promised land.

The Yakima SunDome is where the 2B state volleyball tournament goes down Nov. 10-11.

The Coupeville High School spikers, like every team in their classification, are aiming for a trip to the big dance.

If the Wolves get there, they’ll be familiar with their surroundings, having spent Friday busy on the same courts which will host the state tourney.

Coupeville made the long trip to Yakima to take part in the SunDome Volleyball Festival, and made a positive impression on folks, winning seven of 10 sets.

“Yakima was a great experience for the girls and this team,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

“We went hoping to experience the area in which state volleyball is played, to feel what it is like to play on sport-court, the lights, the sounds, the space, etc.

“We definitely got that experience from 8 AM when we played first until we finally left the SunDome at 6 PM. I am so proud of how the girls remained consistent throughout the day, and how they did it together.”

The Wolves won five of six sets in pool play, sweeping two sets from Selah and Sunnyside Christian, before splitting sets with Tri-Cities Prep.

That third match was a gut-check special, with Coupeville rallying to claim the second set 25-19 after dropping the opener 25-18.

Happy team, state tourney dreams.

Jumping out of pool play, the Wolves faced their toughest competition of the day with a showdown against Connell, and they lost a nailbiter 25-18, 26-24.

Coupeville closed a very long day with a final match against Northwest 2B/1B League rival Darrington — who they play for real this Tuesday, Sept. 20.

After a close first set, which went to the Wolves by the score of 25-20, CHS rolled in set two to the tune of 25-9.

“Fatigue had begun to set in as we made some uncharacteristic errors but pulled together a string of points at the end that allowed us to overtake them,” Whitmore said.

“Having to dig deep, despite some serious fatigue and compete for the win was exactly what we hoped to accomplish as far as post-season experience to rely on later.”

While Coupeville winning seven of ten sets in a day was a strong mark, it’s the intangibles which might loom larger as the season plays out.

“It was the bonding and playing experience that will have made the trip well worth it,” Whitmore said.

“Everyone had moments of brilliance throughout the day and it was fun to watch them work through the tournament challenges together.”

The numbers keep piling up.

Week three of the high school football season brought a win to Coupeville, as the Wolves stomped visiting Sultan 30-13 Friday night.

Running wild over the Turks, the Wolves, now 2-1 heading into a trip to La Conner, added to their season totals on both sides of the ball.

From touchdowns, to tackles for loss, to fumble recoveries, CHS coaches plugged it all into MaxPreps, and then I came along to pluck the fruit which will get me sweet, sweet page hits.

So, here you go, some season-to-date stats to marinate in.

Wolf soccer coach Kyle Nelson tapes up Wynter Arndt as she prepares to defend her home pitch.

They’re off to see the world.

Coupeville High School athletic teams will spend some time on buses and ferries this coming week, with seven of nine events on the road.

All five fall Wolf squads have at least one meet, match, or game away from Whidbey, with only volleyball and boys soccer getting to play in front of their home fans.

The CHS spikers have the busiest schedule, playing three times, with road matches Tuesday at Darrington and Saturday at Forks packaged around a home clash Thursday with Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, Wolf cross country is off to Orcas Wednesday and Shoreline Saturday for the King’s Invite, while football travels to La Conner for Friday Night Lights.

Rounding out things, the booters hit the pitch, with the boys team traveling to La Conner Tuesday before playing at home Friday against Friday Harbor.

Coupeville’s girls soccer squad is off until Saturday, when it treks out to Forks for a non-league clash.

Ayden Wyman is on a run.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has scored both of her team’s goals this season, including one in a narrow 2-1 loss Saturday to visiting Ocosta.

Toss in four scores from her fab frosh season, and Wyman is already tied with former Wolf stars Mallory Kortuem and Eryn Wood for 11th place on the all-time CHS girls soccer scoring list.

The program, which launched in 2004, has five players who’ve tallied double digits, led by Mia Littlejohn (35) and Kalia Littlejohn (33).

Genna Wright (20), Lindsey Roberts (17), and Avalon Renninger (12) round out the Wolf girls in the top five.

Sophie Martin (8), Sage Renninger (8), Marisa Etzell (7), Alexia Hemphill (7), and Micky LeVine (7) are next up for Wyman, who has another nine regular season games left on the schedule in her second season.

Saturday’s loss to Ocosta, which travelled 145 miles one-way for the non-conference tilt, drops Coupeville to 0-4.

The Wildcats, who like to make one long trip each season as a team bonding experience, are 2-2-1 on the season.

Coupeville’s record is a bit deceptive, with two of its four losses being one-goal affairs. The other defeats were against 3A Oak Harbor and private school power University Prep.

The Wolves get some time to rest up, recover from nagging injuries, and work on fine-tuning their attack on both sides of the field, not playing again for a week.

CHS will be the one making the epic journey, trekking a modest 113 miles to the wilds of Forks Saturday, Sept. 24 for another non-conference rumble.

After that the Wolves have three straight Northwest 2B/1B League clashes, starting with a matchup against defending league champ Mount Vernon Christian.
