Booters shoot, score on awards night

Wolf junior Aram Leyva was a First-Team All-Conference selection.

First year in a new league, and Coupeville High School boys soccer made a nice showing.

The Wolves, who finished 6-10, winning one of three playoff games even while hampered by a major wave of injuries, placed three players on the North Sound Conference All-League teams.

Junior Aram Leyva claimed First-Team honors while junior Derek Leyva and sophomore Sam Wynn were tabbed for Second-Team acclaim.

The All-Conference awards were just part of the hardware handed out Wednesday, as Coupeville’s booters capped their season with a banquet.

In team awards, Derek Leyva was selected as the Player of the Year, while Dewitt Cole (Most Inspirational), Chris Cernick (Most Improved), and Xavier Murdy (Rookie of the Year) also came to the podium.

Teo Keilwitz and Uriah Kastner were honored for being four-year players, while Keilwitz and Aram Leyva were team captains.

CHS diamond men claim awards

Jake Pease won the team’s “Dirt Bag Award” for plays like this.

A late-season run carried the Coupeville High School baseball squad to the playoffs, and won the Wolves some fans among league coaches.

When All-Conference balloting was finished, four CHS diamond men landed North Sound Conference Second-Team honors.

Seniors Matt Hilborn, Jake Pease, and Dane Lucero were tabbed, while junior catcher Gavin Knoblich also got the call.

Those awards were just the start of what Coupeville coach Chris Smith doled out Tuesday, as he and his staff held a season-ending awards banquet.

Hilborn, who led the team on the mound and at the plate, was named the MVP, while Lucero was tabbed as Offensive Player of the Year and Knoblich as Defensive Player of the Year.

Pease claimed the “Dirt Bag Award,” Gavin Straub was handed the “Aiden Award,” named after former CHS player Aiden Crimmins, and Lucero and Pease were honored as captains.

Seniors Lucero, Pease, Hilborn, and Shane Losey notched Four-Year awards for playing their entire high school career.

Wolf grad earns college hoops honor

Kailey Kellner is hittin’ it big in New York.

The Coupeville grad was one of three D’Youville College women’s basketball players honored by the school at an awards ceremony earlier this month.

Kellner, who hit career highs in scoring and field goal percentage during her sophomore season, was tabbed for the Spartan Award by D’Youville coach Dan Glover.

Also honored were freshman Danielle Hore, named team MVP, and sophomore Kelsey Carpenter, who brought home the team’s Most Improved Player award.

Kellner was hailed for “consistently working on her game to make an impact for her team” and “being a presence in the gym working out and working on her game.”

The Spartan Award represents a player who exemplifies teamwork, passion and a dedication to their team.

During her time in Coupeville, Kellner played basketball and softball, was named as an All-Conference selection on the hard-court, and helped lead the Wolf hoops squad to the state tournament.

“Torpedo” launches, snags hoops MVP honors

Immediate impact.

From the moment they made their varsity basketball debuts this season, junior Sean Toomey-Stout and freshman Hawthorne Wolfe were at the core of everything the Coupeville High School boys basketball squad accomplished.

Leading a young team building for the future, the duo impressed North Sound Conference coaches, picking up votes in postseason voting and earning Honorable Mention status when the league recently named its All-Conference teams.

Toomey-Stout, bouncing back after missing his sophomore basketball season thanks to a football injury, added the team varsity MVP award Wednesday, when CHS held its season-ending banquet.

“The Torpedo” led the Wolves in steals, assists, points in the paint, and offensive rebounds, while finishing second in defensive boards and scoring.

The night’s other big awards went to the team’s two seniors, post player Dane Lucero and team manager Ryan Labrador.

Lucero capped a two-year run on the hardwood by nabbing the varsity Wolf Pack Award, which honors a player who showcases “leadership, character, attitude, effort, and commitment.”

“Dane exemplifies all of these and more,” said CHS coach Brad Sherman. “Very deserving of being recognized for his level of leadership and class in everything he does.”

Labrador received the Program Distinguished Service Award.

“Ryan works extremely hard to support those around him, never asks for anything in return, and does it with a smile on his face,” Sherman said. “That’s just who he is and we were very lucky to have him this year.”

As a program, Coupeville also received a pair of awards from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, with both the varsity and JV earning Distinguished Scholastic Awards.

The JV put together a cumulative GPA of 3.292, while the Wolf varsity finished at 3.185.

Trio of All-Conference picks tops girls hoops honors

They made a strong first impression.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball team beat preseason predictions, finishing third in the new six-team North Sound Conference.

Proving the best of the four scrappy public schools, CHS pushed back as hard as anyone against the twin private school juggernauts who ruled the roost.

The Wolves took Cedar Park Christian to the final moments in the second meeting between the teams, and did what it could to contend with league champ King’s.

Based on their play, and their refusal to back down, league coaches tabbed three Wolves for All-League honors, led by senior Lindsey Roberts earning a First-Team distinction.

A four-year varsity vet, she led Coupeville in scoring for the second-straight season, and wrapped her career as the #18 scorer in program history.

Fellow senior Ema Smith and junior Scout Smith, Coupeville’s other two varsity captains, were honored as Second-Team All-League picks.

Both Smith girls had big seasons, with Ema topping the team in nailing three-pointers, while Scout ran the point for the Wolves and sealed a key win at Sultan with a pair of late free throws.

In addition, junior Avalon Renninger shared the NSC Sportsmanship Award.

The coaching staffs from each league team picked one player from their squad to be honored.

The league awards were just the start Thursday as CHS coaches David and Amy King capped their seventh season with a team banquet.
