Not even a hurt leg could slow her down.

Despite missing several games late in the season after a bad on-court fall, Mia Farris was the spark which lit the fire for the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball squad.

That was born out Thursday, as Wolf coaches handed the junior sensation their MVP award.

Farris topped a busy night of honors, with fellow varsity stars Katie Marti (Offensive MVP) and Lyla Stuurmans (Defensive MVP) also claiming big awards.

Lyla Stuurmans will eat your very soul, sister.

Sophomore Teagan Calkins earned Most Improved, Kayla Arnold was handed Most Inspirational, and Skylar Parker and Reese Wilkinson joined Arnold in being honored as four-year players.

On the JV side of things, Bryley Gilbert (Leadership Award) and Brynn Parker (Heart Award) topped things for Kassie O’Neil’s squad.

Other second-team honors went to:

Capri Anter – Swiss Army Knife Award
Haylee Armstrong – Master Thief Award
Ari Cunningham – Not My House Award
Lexis Drake – Warrior Award
Ava Lucero – Uplifting Award
Taylor Marrs – Sight Award
Adie Maynes – Dependable Award
Chelsi Stevens – Brave Award
Tenley Stuurmans – Lil’ Coach Award

They shoot, they score.

Whether on the hardwood or at a season-ending awards banquet, Coupeville High School basketball players racked up big-time success this season.

The Wolf boys’ varsity shared a league title, captured the Bi-District crown outright, and advanced to the state tourney for the second time in three seasons.

The Wolves celebrate adding more hardware to the trophy case.

Meanwhile the JV hoops stars torched nearly everyone in sight, racking up a 14-2 mark while running most foes off the floor.

With the basketballs put away and uniforms turned in, the Wolves gathered as a unit one final time Tuesday, with Brad Sherman and his coaching staff handing out letters and awards.

In the year’s biggest non-surprise, senior Logan Downes was hailed as the varsity Player of the Year.

That comes on the heels of the program’s all-time leading scorer winning Northwest 2B/1B League MVP and being tabbed as an All-State player.

Cole White snagged Defensive Player of the Year for the varsity, while Ryan Blouin earned the Wolf Award.

Rounding out the night’s honorees were Nick Guay (Sixth Man Award), Thomas Studer (Heart of Service Award), and Chase Anderson (Sunrise Award).

Eight of Coupeville’s nine seniors played all four years for the Wolves, with Zane Oldenstadt, William Davidson, Mikey Robinett, and Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim joining Downes, White, Blouin, and Guay.

On the JV side of things, Aiden O’Neill was tabbed as Player of the Year, with Camden Glover (Offense) and Landon Roberts (Defense) also hailed for their work.

Jack Porter took home the Wolf Award, with Riley Lawless noted for his work as Sixth Man of the Year.

“Get in my belly!!” (Leann Leavitt photo)

“I am proud of the fight in this team, and I have learned so much from their effort, and passion many of them pour into this game!”

Looking back on his second season at the helm of the Coupeville High School football program, Bennett Richter came away pleased.

While the Wolves came up just short in a bid to defend their league title, and return to state, the small school warriors remained resilient while frequently playing up against 1A and 2A schools.

“Although the season may not have turned out the way we intended, the memories and life lessons experienced and learned throughout this season will carry on with these kids and coaches the rest of our lives!” Richter said.

“We found that the sons of Coupeville are resilient, strong and unafraid to run headfirst into adversity and to tackle what may seem impossible!”

Operating on limited sleep, with his newborn daughter having arrived right at the end of the season, Richter pulled things together Thursday to hand out awards and letters at a dessert-orientated banquet.

Sophomore Chase Anderson, a two-way First-Team All-Conference player, was tabbed as Offensive MVP, while senior lineman William Davidson copped Defensive MVP.

Anderson also notched Special Teams MVP, with senior Zane Oldenstadt earning the Way of the Wolf, which goes to the player who is “most inspirational, who would you follow into battle.”
