Grove

Lauren Grove made the jump from JV to varsity and was tabbed as her team’s best defender.

The Wolf varsity and coach David King celebrate after knocking Seattle Christian out of the playoffs.

Makana Stone went out with a slam dunk.

The Coupeville High School senior capped her stellar prep hoops career with a second-straight MVP award from 1A Olympic League coaches, then took home five other honors when the Wolves held their awards banquet Monday.

Plus, she was tabbed to play in the All-State game Saturday, Mar. 19 at King’s High School (4 PM tip-off).

Stone will be one of 10 players on the 1A squad, which will face off with a 2A all-star team.

And she wasn’t the only Coupeville hoops star who needed their parents to hitch a trailer to the car to haul home all their hardware.

Junior Kailey Kellner and sophomore Mia Littlejohn were also named First-Team All-League selections, as CHS, which successfully defended its league title, accounted for 50% of the league’s top six players.

Port Townsend (sophomore Kaitlyn Meek), Klahowya (junior Maya Ladner) and Chimacum (junior Mechelle Nisbit) each notched one First-Teamer.

Wolf junior Lauren Grove, who made her varsity basketball debut in 2015-2016, received Honorable Mention from league coaches.

Coupeville, which went 16-6, advanced to state for the first time in a decade and is now a flawless 18-0 in two years of Olympic League competition, also received the conference’s Sportsmanship Award for the second straight year.

So, basically, their streak of crushing league foes could scream “rise of the Evil Empire,” but their poise and manners betrays that a bit.

They’re sort of like the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” of the late ’80s-early ’90s, only a lot more couth and considerate.

She’s a three-timer.

Coupeville High School senior Makana Stone is off to a phenomenal start to the basketball season, and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association took notice.

The WIAA tabbed #23 as their female 1A Athlete of the Week today, the third straight year Stone has earned the award during basketball season.

She earned the award in week 16 of her sophomore year, repeated in week 20 as a junior, then topped things with a week 15 appearance this year.

Athletes are allowed to win the award once during a given academic year.

Stone was honored for her play last week, when she averaged 23.33 points, 14.67 rebounds, four steals, 2.33 assists and 1.33 blocks per game.

The awards, which honor one female and one male athlete in all of Washington’s classes (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B), went to 10 basketball players and two wrestlers this week.

Other schools honored included Federal Way, Vashon Island, Wapato and Touchet.

They like to give awards to Josh Bayne.

A year after he was tabbed as the 1A Olympic League MVP during his senior season at Coupeville High School, Awesome Joshsome was back at the podium this week.

This time he was being honored as the Rookie of the Year when the Simon Fraser University football team held its awards night.

Bayne played in eight games for the Clan as a true freshman, recording 13 solo tackles and five assists from his defensive back position. He also broke up three passes, defended three others and joined in on a tackle for a loss.

Fellow CHS alumni Jake Tumblin joined Bayne in Canada this season, recording four solo tackles, six assists and a tackle for a loss during his freshman campaign.

The duo faced off twice with former Wolf teammate Nick Streubel, who plays on the line for Central Washington, giving Coupeville five current college football players.

Mitch Pelroy (Montana Western) and Joel Walstad (Midland) round out that group.

Joseph Wedekind

Doubles ace Joseph Wedekind shared MVP and captains honors.

Psst. Wanna know a secret?

Sure you do, and Coupeville High School boys’ tennis coach Ken Stange knows you feel that way.

So, with his team’s season-ending awards banquet not hitting until Dec. 1, he’s decided to relieve the tension and release a list of the honorees early.

Everyone goes to the tennis shindig for the food, anyways, so now they can all relax and plan their noshing without being on the edge of their seats for the next two weeks.

So, drum-roll, and our awards begin with Sebastian Davis and Joseph Wedekind sharing MVP honors, while the duo are joined by Connor McCormick and John McClarin as Captains.

Jimmy Myers snagged Most Inspirational while Jakobi Baumann and Santiago Ortiz share Most Improved in voting by their fellow teammates.
