Makana Stone is settling into being a starter quite nicely.

The former Coupeville star made her second start as a college player Tuesday night and responded with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, sparking the Whitman College women’s basketball squad to its second straight win.

The Blues held off a late rally from host Whitworth to exit Spokane with a 71-65 win.

Whitman is now 16-2 overall, 7-2 in Northwest Conference play, and pulls within a game-and-a-half of first place Puget Sound (8-0).

Since inserting their freshman phenom in the starting lineup, the Blues have been unbeatable.

Stone started things off by knocking down the game’s opening basket, on a layup in the paint, then went off in the second quarter.

She dropped eight of her points and snatched five caroms as Whitman used a 20-13 second quarter surge to stake itself to a 14-point lead at the break.

After her first-half explosion, Stone started dealing the ball to her teammates, picking up all three of her assists in the second half.

Toss in four more rebounds and she had her first collegiate double-double.

Chelsi Brewer hit for 13 and Maegen Martin swished 11, as the Blues put three players in double figures in the scoring column.

In 18 games, Stone has 95 points (5.3 a night) and 97 boards (5.4).

She’s third on the squad in rebounding, while also having 18 assists, seven blocks and 11 steals.

Want to honor Maya Toomey-Stout for playing while blind, or one of her teammates for their own achievement? You’ll have the chance Tuesday. (John Fisken photo)

Have something positive to say? I have an outlet for you.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball squads are playing at home Tuesday, which marks only the third time in 14 games this season we’ve been able to say that.

During the games (varsity tips at 3:30, JV at 5:00), Wolf coaches will be looking for input from you.

Yes, you.

There will be a notepad available at both games, so consider firing off a quick note and dropping your message into the red box offered.

“Our hope is that family, friends and fans are encouraged by the play of the girls,” said CHS coach David King. “If they see something they like, or just want to write a quick note to a player or players during or right after the games, it would be great for the players.

“It can be as simple as telling them great hustle. Or things like I like how you played defense or rebounded today,” he added. “Maybe there was a specific play that really impressed you; if it did, write it down for the player(s).”

The note pad is a way for the team to connect with its fan base, while providing support for the girls hoops stars, who are flying high right now.

The varsity is 10-3 overall, 5-0 in Olympic League play and will clinch its third-straight conference championship with a win, while the JV is 7-3, 3-0.

“We want to get the fans more involved,” King said. “To show the players that there is support and encouragement in the stands.”

They were done, then they weren’t done after all, and now they’re really done.

The Coupeville Middle School boys basketball schedule took a series of twists and turns at the end of the season, but it all worked out in the end, with the Wolves getting a 10th game Monday in Port Townsend.

The CMS 7th graders took advantage, drilling Blue Heron 50-34, clinching a winning season at 6-4. The younger Wolves beat four of five teams in their league this season.

Playing with a much-thinner roster (they tipped off Monday with six players and finished with three, thanks to foul trouble) the CMS 8th graders stayed close for a half, but fell 50-35.

The older group finished the season 2-8.

Monday’s 7th grade game was decided in the third quarter, when the Wolves savaged their hosts 18-5.

Clinging to a 20-17 lead coming out of the halftime break, Coupeville immediately jumped on its foes, with balanced scoring from Xavier Murdy (six in the quarter), Hawthorne Wolfe (5) and Caleb Meyer (5).

Wolfe led the attack all night, finishing with a game-high 16, while Murdy tallied a season-best 14 and Meyer pounded home nine.

Logan Martin banked in six, Connor Barton tickled the twines for five and Tony Garcia, Aiden Burdge, Logan Wertz, Jonathan Carroll and Cody Roberts all saw floor time.

The 8th graders stayed within 20-14 in the first half, but the third quarter killed their hopes. Outscored 18-11, they faded down the stretch as, one by one, they lost bodies.

Jake Mitten closed out his middle school career with 14, while Daniel Olson (9), Sage Downes (7) and Dakota Eck (5) also scored.

Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez will join that foursome in making the jump to high school hoops next year.

One is riding sky-high, the other is fighting for its playoff life.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Coupeville High School basketball squads are going in opposite directions.

The Wolf girls need just one win in their final four league games to clinch a third-straight Olympic League crown, while the CHS boys sit a half game off of their conference’s final postseason slot.

Now 23-0 all-time in Olympic League play, the girls will go for the clincher at home Tuesday against last-place Klahowya.

After an unprecedented eight straight games on the road — Tuesday’s tilt will be their first home game in 45 days — the Wolf girls play five of their final six in their own gym.

The CHS boys, who came within a play of stunning league champ Port Townsend Friday night, will have to succeed on the road, as they travel off of Whidbey four of their final five games, including all three league affairs left to play.

Where things sit through Monday morning:
